ONE (Elliott's letter): 3pp., 12mo. 34 lines. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, loosely attached to the title-leaf of the book by a small piece of gummed paper. The letter begins: 'My dear Driberg | I ought to have acknowledged your letter sooner, but I only received it on my return from abroad, and since then I have been busy struggling with the arears which always accrue during absence.' He thanks him for sending his 'son's little volume', which he has read 'with much interest & congratulate him on the neat & modest appearance he has made in print'.

2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with slight discoloration to reverse of second leaf, which also bears traces of mount along one edge. Addressed, on reverse of second leaf, to 'The Attorney General | &c &c &c | J R G Graham'. This letter - an unusually detailed survival for a communication from one officer of state to another during this period - concerns a House of Commons debate on the 'Moral and Religious Education of the Working Classes', held on 28 February 1843, and extensively reported in The Times, 1 March 1843, pp.3-4.

2pp., 4to. On aged and stained paper. With good, finished engraving at head of first page, by 'R. T. Stocker, Delt.' from 'J. Cross. sc. 18 Holborn', depicting the house in its grounds, with children playing on its lawns. From the papers of F. A. Bulley of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. The First page is headed, in fancy type, 'ROYAL MEDICAL BENEVOLENT COLLEGE. | EPSOM.', beneath which is an engraving of the College. The prospectus is presented in the form of a letter, and is dated 'Febry. 1859' and signed (as a 'faithful fellow-laborer') by Propert in light-blue ink.

2pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. The breaking of the seal has resulted in slight loss at the foot of the gutter, affecting two words of text. Verso of second leaf addressed, with two postmarks and red wax seal, to 'Alexander Williamson Esqr | Alisons Square | Edinburgh'.

6pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He is writing to inform Clark that he is 'about to become a schoolmaster - temporarily only', and is 'giving the English Literature Course to Scottish Schools this session'. He is 'speaking on "Poetry of To-Day and Yesterday", or, in more precise terms, on Poetry since the death of Tennyson'. He gives the times of his talk, and hopes Clark will 'tune in'. 'Broadcasting to schools is increasing up here, though I imagine that it will be equally as popular, if not more popular, in England'.

6pp., foolscap 8vo. On two grey-paper bifoliums. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Docketted by Wiseman on the reverse of the last leaf: 'Dr Manning's Mem[orandu]m to Walpole on Reform[ator]ies'. The document (presumably copied by Wiseman expressly for Manning) is addressed to 'The Right Hon. Spencer Walpole M.P.', and is complete to the valediction, but unsigned. It begins: 'Sir | I beg leave to lay before you a subject of much importance affecting the Reformatory School for Catholic Boys at Brook Green, Hammersmith which is under my direction.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium on mourning paper. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 'It was indeed a great happiness to see those young choristers finding part of their Christmas happiness in ministering to the invalid little ones.

Three perforated leaves, carrying the 'College Entrance Form' (as described above), 'Hall Entrance Form for Resident Women Students' and 'Entrance Certificate | To be signed by a qualified medical man.' Divided into two main sections: 'Class Teaching on the Consultation Day' ('Health Talks' and 'Sewing Class') and 'Classes held other than on the Consultation Day' ('Mothercraft, Hygiene, &c.', 'Sewing Class', 'Cookery', '"Advanced" Classes', 'General Arrangements' and 'Teachers'). The three volumes in good condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn and creased wraps. The first of the three volumes begins with a twenty-page address by the chairman W. J. Lineham, followed by eight and a half pages of discussions. The other two volumes print a variety of discussion papers and reports of discussions on them, and both have lists of members. Scarce: no copy on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

The volumes for 1923-1924 and 1925-1925 both subtitled 'Interchange of Teachers Between the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland and those of other Countries'. The five volumes uniform, stapled and unbound. 12mo: 48pp., 40pp., 31pp., 33 + [1]pp., 33 + [1]pp. The volume for 1924-1925 with 'Supplementary List, with three-page 'Corrections of Original (printed) List' loosely inserted. All five in good condition, on aged and worn paper. The five with shelfmarks, and four with the red label of the Board of Education Reference Library.

15 + 1pp., 12mo. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with shelfmark and red label of the Education Department, Reference Library. Four-page introduction by Gell followed by nine pages of 'Statements of Account for year ending June 30, 1888'. Included are four pages of accounts of the Endowment Fund, Foundation Fund, Literary Building Fund and Maintenance Fund at Toynbee Hall, and a page on the Spencer Ball and King-Harman Memorial Fund.

The Yorkshire College of Science was founded in 1874, and merged with Owens College, Manchester, and University College, Liverpool, to form Victoria University ten years later. In 1904, King Edward VII granted Leeds University its own Charter as an independent institution. The author of the pamphlet begins by expressing the hope that 'at the forthcoming meeting of Principals in London, on the 19th and 20th December, time may be found to discuss part of the subject of the influence of the Universities and Colleges upon Secondary Schools'. Both transcriptions are more than two pages long. Scarce: no copies on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.
