Elizabeth Smith of Consiton, biblical scholar and translator.] Part of manuscript by 'Miss Elizabeth Smith of Coniston given to S L by her Mother', on the 'anarchy & confusion' threatening the world as a result of the decline of Sunday worship.
2pp., 4to. On a single leaf of aged and worn paper. 56 lines of text (26 lines to each page), with one emendation ink (deleted) and another in pencil. Apparently unpublished. The first page begins: 'It is presumed we have now refuted the arguments, if arguments they may be called, of those who dispute our being bound to observe the sabbath; but there still remains another question - how it is to be observed? - From the conduct of many who call themselves Christians one would almost be led to believe that they thought a due observance of it considered in total idleness.' She considers that 'From the neglect of this employment of the sabbath have arisen all the evils we now complain of & which threaten to fill the world with anarchy & confusion - from this cause parents have mourned over disobedient children - masters over undutiful servants - & monarchs over rebellious subjects.' The second page concludes: 'That there is a miserable failure of this public testimony, we need no arguments to prove - while the voice of even-song is almost unheard among us - unless a Sunday concert may be so denominated, which fills our streets with noise & confusion, & our minds with far other thoughts than those of heaven. Where the viol the harp & the tabret are attuned, not to the praise of God, but to the voice of mirth & levity -'. Note: Ascription at foot of document as follows: "MissElizabeth Smith of Coniston given to S.L. by her mother." I have yet to trace anything else in her hand.
