In worn contemporary grey buckram half-binding, with marbled covers. A weighty piece of biblical exegesis. A family copy of an uncommon book, the volume descending to Tyrwhitt's relation Thomas Colmer.

2pp., 4to. On a single leaf of aged and worn paper. 56 lines of text (26 lines to each page), with one emendation ink (deleted) and another in pencil. Apparently unpublished. The first page begins: 'It is presumed we have now refuted the arguments, if arguments they may be called, of those who dispute our being bound to observe the sabbath; but there still remains another question - how it is to be observed?

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Reads: 'As you express in your letter of the 26th that you take some interest in my publications, I have the pleasure of forwarding a copy of a Chronological Chart just published'.

Two pages, 12mo, good condition. I have just sent off by rail folios 1-24 of Isaiah, to middle of Chap. xiv, though I hardly expect you will be able to make much progress with that book at your next meeting. It is interesting work, but will not be huried. | I have also enclosed a copy of my 'Proleomena' (25 copies printed separately from the Hexapla) for your kind acceptance as the Fascicules (which will include it) may not be out for some weeks, though quite out of my hands.

4pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums. Good, on lightly-aged paper. To an unknown recipient. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | I shall be glad to be of any service to an intending fellow traveller in the Holy Land.' In eight numbered paragraphs, discussing: dragomans ('I was fortunate enough to secure a trustworthy native servant at Jaffa, who had all the knowledge & experience of a dragoman, without the insolence & extravagance which is common to the class. His name was Abdullah of Bethlehem. [...] He charged me on an average £1.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. 'Revd. Thos. Hartwell Horne presents his respectful Comps. to the Rt. Hon. Lord Londesborough; and regrets that the state of his health will not allow him the pleasure of being present at his Lordship's Conversazione, on the 21st. inst.'

Both items good on lightly-aged paper. Letter One (12mo, 2 pp): Having considered the question of the fee for a piece of writing, he does 'not know very well what to say. Perhaps you might give me what the Hibbert Journal pays its contributors.' (Docketed in pencil in the margin: 'What is that?') He 'could do the work when the College Session is over - at the end of March'. Asks to be informed 'what is necessary of the arrangements', and to be sent 'the sheets of the book.

The engraving illustrates the biblical passage describing an incident during the wreck off Crete of a ship carrying Saint Paul. Acts 27:35: 'And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.' Printed on one side of a piece of paper, 28 x 19 cm, with one rough edge. A striking image, irregularly shaped, with white lines against a black background, showing centurions and others on the deck of a ship on a stormy sea, with land in the distance.

12mo, 2 pp. Good on lightly aged paper. Folded twice. Traces of previous mount adhering to reverse of blank second leaf of bifolium. The recipient 'cannot be more conservative' than Burgon himself. 'But remember - it is the interpretation of the Rubric in question which is causing us all this difficulty.

4to (26.5 x 22 cm), 2 pp, 30 lines of text. On discoloured and lightly creased and stained paper, with some chipping to extremities, but with text clear and entire.

Oriental linguist and biblical scholar (1812-94). Paper dimensions roughly sixteen centimeters by eight. Paper creased and foxed. Mounted on slightly-larger piece of brown paper. In French. Reads 'Que la paix de Dieu multipliee a toute votre famille, et que cette dispensation soit dirigee a la gloire du Nom qui est invoque sur nous!' Signed 'Cr. Malan.'
