2pp., 4to. On aged and stained paper. With good, finished engraving at head of first page, by 'R. T. Stocker, Delt.' from 'J. Cross. sc. 18 Holborn', depicting the house in its grounds, with children playing on its lawns. From the papers of F. A. Bulley of the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Beneath the engraving is the title: 'SURREY HOUSE | ESTABLISHMENT FOR YOUNG GENTLEMEN, | LITTLEHAMPTON, SUSSEX.' The text, in small type, begins in florid style: 'LITTLEHAMPTON, the summer resort of the far-famed Abernethy, is situate upon the Sussex coast, between Bognor and Worthing, on the high road from Chichester to Brighton, and is accessible from London by Railway. | Surrey House (formerly the Marine Residence of His Grace the Duke of Norfolk), about a mile eastward from the Town of Littlehampton, was in 1839 taken by Mr. GRIX, for the purpose of establishing a School. It stands within 100 yards from the sea-shore; and, although placed upon an eminence, is yet protected in the rear from the North and East winds by the Sussex Downs; while facing the South, it has all the advantages of the pure and bracing breezes from the sea.' The text includes the statements that 'The Boys have the opportunity of Sea-bathing; and during the season frequently avail themselves of it.' and 'Mr. and Mrs. Grix sit at table with the Pupils, and share all their meals with them.' Subheadings on 'Terms' ('charges (payable half-yearly) include Instruction in the usual routine of an English Education and Board and Washing') and 'Extras' (including 'Drilling' and 'A separate Bed', with 'Drawing' added in manuscript). Final comments include: 'It is expected that each Pupil should be provided with six Towels' and 'A Quarter's Notice required prior to the removal of a Pupil'.
