Octavo: 415 pp. In contemporary red cloth binding, with title and owner's initials (K.D.F.) in gilt on spine. Internally tight, on aged paper; binding worn, faded and lightly stained. No half-title. Inscribed on title-page 'To my chum, the youngest of the Vixens, on striking twenty - by name Kathleen Douglas Fox, - name of friend - Blanche Wemyss-Whittake date. Nov. 30th. 1885. on the eve of going to Dresden<,> at present in Bath.' Bound in at the end, in Wemyss-Whittaker's hand, is a three-page 'Key to the characters in "Charles Auchester"', giving the 'unmistakable' identities of the five main characters ('Auchester' is the violinist Joseph Joachim, and the others are Mendelsohn, Jenny Lind, 'Professor Zelter', and Sterndale Bennet), and tentatively identifying the others. Miss Fox's initials, in light blue gothic script, on verso of title. Occasional pencil notes, including at least one other tentative identification (Clare Novello), in text. Ascribed to 'Miss Disraeli' in pencil on title.
