(There are references to Turley on pp. vi and 41 of the book. Turley and Knipe were provincial surgeons of relative proximity: Knipe at Stratford-upon-Avon and Turley at Worcester. The book features a sixteen-page preface by James M'Millan of Worcester.) According to Louis Rosenfeld ('Four Centuries of Clinical Chemistry', ), Stevens (1786-1868), 'a British physician on St. Croix', was an early advocate of oral rehydration. This work is a defence of Stevens's 'saline treatment', as contrasted with that of 'Mr. Marsden, of the Free Hospital in Greville Street'. Much of the work is devoted to 'the cases of cholera that occurred in the House of Correction at Coldbath-Fields', where Stevens 'attended most of the Cholera patients'.
