OBITUARY

For information about Sievier's colourful and disreputable career, see his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, which states that, under the name of 'Sutton', Sievier was 'the first bookmaker in Victoria to bet with bag and clerk, standing on a regular pitch and issuing numbered tickets for the horses backed'. In 1887 he returned to England afer his bookmaker's license was withdrawn following his assault on Lord Deerhurst.

16pp., 8vo. Disbound. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Steel engraved portrait of Carlyle on title-page. Clearly produced immediately following Carlyle's death, as the commencement indicates: 'On a cold wintry Monday morning in February the Times announced that Thomas Carlyle was seriously ill.

On one side of a piece of paper 21 x 14 cm. Mourning border. Very good, on lightly aged and spotted paper. Twenty-four lines of text announcing the 'death of our esteemed partner [...] for so many years [...] our fellow-labourer in the field of literary enterprise'. Cassell is described as 'a man of vigorous intellect and untiring energy, whose constant aim it was to render effectual assistance towards moral, social, and religious elevation of the people'.

Wigwam Club flier on one side of piece of paper, roughly 20 x 13 cm. Very good. Headed with humourous illustration of crowded wigwam on which is written 'No admission except on business'. Jealous, as Honorary Secretary, states that the club, with William Hughes in the Chair, will meet at Anderton's, in Fleet Street, on 19 July 1892. 'In Memoriam' card on both sides of card roughly 9 x 11 cm. Good, though a little grubby, with traces of grey paper mount at foot of reverse.
