xii.[460].[48]pp, 8vo, hinge strain, cover showing signs of wear and tear, marking throughout, fair condition only. The [48] page section at the back is an Appendix containing a Catalogue of relevant Books and MSS. exhibited. Luminaries like Gurney-Salter and Isaac Pitman participated. Inscribed on title "W.B. Gurney & Sons | 26 Abingdon St Westminster" (" W B Gurney & Sons LLP (Gurney's) was established in 1735 by Thomas Gurney. It is one of the country's longest surviving businesses.

PAMPHLET: 16pp., 12mo, and four plates of 'Taylor's System of Shorthand | as used by the Author.' Erratum slip. Stitched. In light-green printed wraps. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Two page introduction by Levy, followed by three-page 'Preface to the Second Edition' by him, dated 'July, 1890'. The rest of the pamphlet consists of 'An Essay intended to establish a Standard for Stenography'. In his introduction Levy explains that 'numerous enquiries' have induced him 'to publish the following System of Shorthand, which was invented by Samuel Taylor and first published in 1786'.

The front of the volume carries the inscribed on front free endpaper: 'Robert Johnson Junr. | February. 1846'. The text is in two parts, with 29pp. at the front of the volume (inc. 1p. in shorthand); and 70pp. (inc. 10pp. in shorthand) at the rear (with the volume turned upside down). Lightly-aged, and with a light bloom working out from gutter of central pages.
