[Culinary ephemera from Victorian Banbury cake shops.] Six items [printed by Cheney & Sons], including two advertisements for wedding cake boxes by Henry Stone & Son, calling card and letterhead of E. W. Brown's 'Original Cake Shop' ('A.D. 1638').
The six items in very good condition, lightly aged. ONE: 'Trade List' by 'Henry Stone & Son, Wholesale Stationers and Box Manufacturers, Banbury', for 'Wedding Cake Boxes'. Printed in green on one side of a piece of 25 x 18.5 cm cream paper. At head are engravings for 'No. 21, with Tabs' and 'Nos. 27 and 28, Orange Blossom Design'. Numbers, names, dimensions and prices are given for six 'White Satin Watered Paper, with Lace Flies', and two 'Special New Design | Orange Blossoms on a Silver Ground'. TWO: Handbill advertisement by 'Henry Stone & Son, Box Manufacturers, Banbury' for 'Wedding Cake Boxes'. Printed in green on one side of a piece of 22.5 x 14 cm white paper. Advertising six 'White Satin Watered Paper, with Silver Edges and Lace Flies'. THREE: Calling card of 'E. W. BROWN, | WEDDING CAKE MANUFACTURER, | THE ORIGINAL CAKE SHOP, | BANBURY. | SOLICITING THE FAVOR OF YOUR KIND ORDERS.' Printed in brown on 5 x 10 cm shiny white card, with gold border. FOUR: Letterhead 'From E. W. Brown, The Original Cake Shop. (A.D. 1638) 12, Parson's Street, Banbury. | Banbury Cakes fresh daily. Wedding and Birthday Cakes. Plain and Ornamental Cakes, Simnels, &c., &c.' 1p., 12mo. Printed in Gothic and Roman type. FIVE: Letterhead with same text as Item Four, but printed in copperplate. 1p., 12mo. SIX: 'Memorandum' letterhead 'From Samuel Betts, Cake Shop, 70, High St., Banbury'. Dated '188[ ]', i.e. from the 1880s. The printers are not named, but the six items are from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'. (John Cheney's calling card describes him as a 'Printer in Gold, Silver, and Colours', with 'Specialities in the best class of work.')
