Coloured frontispiece showing 'The Soldier and the Blind Fiddler'. At rear is a sixteen-page catalogue of 'Books for the Young, Published by Knight and Son, 12, Clerkenwell Close.' Now scarce: although there are 10 copies on WorldCat (where the book is ascribed to Goodrich, and dated), none of them, or on COPAC, are noted as being in Britain.

A total of 211pp., 8vo, paginated vii + xcviii + 105 + [1]. In red leather quarter-binding, with a coat of arms stamped in gilt on the green cloth front cover, and the title in gilt on the spine. Internally in fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in shaken and worn binding, with damage at head and tail of spine. Tastefully printed in a heavy style by Wyman and Sons. Day's 98-page introduction concludes by explaining thaht 'the documents now printed are in possession of Mr. Benett Stanford, the collateral descendant of Colonel Benett, and present member for Shaftesbury.

All five items rolled up. ONE: Cloth-backed map. Title in large coloured fancy letters at head: 'PLAN OF TREVAUNANCE COOMBE'. Dimensions: 99 x 353 cm (3 1/4 feet x 11 1/2 feet). 'Scale | 4 FATHOMS TO 1 INCH'. Oval stamp of Henderson & Son, Civil Engineers, Truro, in bottom right-hand corner, with manuscript date 31 March 1885. Drawn in black ink, and coloured in blue, grey, brown and red. In fair condition, aged and worn. Striking and attractive, with neat lettering, fancy compass (with projected line marked 'MAGNETIC | 1881'), and ruled border with decorative corners.

All three items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: Untitled proof, with 'Proof 6.12.92 [i.e. 6 December 1992]' in manuscript at foot of first page. 20pp., 8vo. Unbound and unstitched. Two manuscript corrections, and two indications of where maps are to be placed. The first letter is written from 'Dawlish, S. Devon, | May 20, 1892', and the last from 'Clifton, | May 31, 1892'. A passage, on pp.5-8, is under the heading 'The End of the Broad Gauge', the first paragraph reading: 'On Thursday the men arrived from all parts of the G.W.

ONE (Grant of 1908): 9 + [1]pp., 8vo. Unstitched and unbound. Properly printed and paginated, with marginal glosses. On aged and worn paper, with closed tears along fold lines. Containing 27 clauses, in an agreement for a term of seven years from 1 January 1909. Between the railway company and, on behalf of W. H. Smith and Son, the Honourable William Frederick Danvers Smith MP, Charles Awdry, Alfred Dyke Acland, Charles Harry St John Hornby and Charles Selwyn Awdry. W. H. Smith had opened their first railway bookstall almost exactly sixty years before, in November of 1848.

On the 8 x 13cm cover of the envelope. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with loss at head and to top right-hand corner from removal from an album, traces of which adhere to the reverse. Playfair's signature ('Lyon Playfair') in the bottom left-hand corner is unnaffected, and the address, also in his hand, reads: 'Messrs George Routledge & Son | Broadway | Ludgate Hill | E.C.' The orange circular franking postmark is incomplete, and reads: 'LON | OFF | PAID | B | 9 FE 86'.

60pp., 12mo. In good condition, on aged paper, with rusted staples. Shelfmarks, stamp and label of the Board of Education Reference Library, London. Scarce.

An attractive piece of Victorian commercial printing. Printed in black on a 31.5 x 21 cm sheet of grey paper. In very good condition, lightly-aged. Beneath the words 'John Blanch & Sons' | Hammerless Ejector Gun | (PATENT)' is the engraving (roughly 8.5 x 15 cm), showing the area around the hinge-pin and trigger of the gun, with a cartridge.

All four items tastefully printed by Cheney & Sons, and all in very good condition. The first two items with 'CHENEY & SONS. TYP., BANBURY' at the foot of the first page; the third and fourth items without printers' details. ONE: For 'J. Harlock & Son, Linen & Woollen Drapers'. 4pp., 16mo (14 x 11 cm). Bifolium. On paper which is light-blue on one side and pink on the other. The design of the item features the cutting away for the top corner of the first leaf to reveal the words 'Sole Agents in Banbury for Dr. Jaeger's sanitary clothing' on the second.

The six items in very good condition, lightly aged. ONE: 'Trade List' by 'Henry Stone & Son, Wholesale Stationers and Box Manufacturers, Banbury', for 'Wedding Cake Boxes'. Printed in green on one side of a piece of 25 x 18.5 cm cream paper. At head are engravings for 'No. 21, with Tabs' and 'Nos. 27 and 28, Orange Blossom Design'. Numbers, names, dimensions and prices are given for six 'White Satin Watered Paper, with Lace Flies', and two 'Special New Design | Orange Blossoms on a Silver Ground'.

The Victoria County History volume for the County of Oxford, Banbury Hundred, describes the firm of Stone & Son as an 'important firm [...] founded by Henry Stone, a Banbury bookseller, who in 1871 started to manufacture a patent letter-filing box invented by his brother-in-law, John Cash of Coventry; first the business developed into general cabinet-making and cardboard-box manufacture, then into high-grade colour printing, and finally into fine-art reproduction.

Printed in black on a 25 x 20 cm piece of grey paper. In very good condition, lightly aged. Beneath the title is a 5 x 11 cm engraving of the cart, followed by a seven-line description, and the prices for five sizes of the cart, with the capacity of each in gallons. The firm's address is at the foot, with the slug centred below it outside the border. From the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

On one side of a 47 x 20 cm piece of paper. Docketted on reverse. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. In part a form, printed in copperplate, with the details completed in manuscript, and signed on behalf of the firm 'Bristol 3rd December 1822 | Errors Excepted | Gibbs Son & Bright'. Included on the debit side are: Duty; Entry Fees, Wharfage, Town & Dock dues; 95 day's Interest; Freight; Warehouse Rent, Porterage, Weighing & Hauling; Insurance from Fire; Brokerage; Commission, leaving 'Nett Proceeds' of £257 18s 10d on £819 5s 0d.

Printed on both sides of a 4to (28 x 22.5cm) leaf of semi-opaque paper. Both sides with oval purple stamp of 'J. Blanch & Son, 29, Gracechurch St., London, Gun Makers'. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with one dog-eared corner, folded three times. An attractively-produced item, with specifications, and text printed in small type. Engraving of a bullet in top right-hand corner of first page, with the Colt prancing horse at top left, also a small engraving of the rifle, with a larger one, by R. M. Smart, showing how 'To Charge the Magazine'.

The first issue 44pp., 12mo, with pink order slip. The second issue 48pp., 12mo (paginated 45-92). Uniform: stapled in brown printed wraps.In fair condition, on aged paper, with rusting from staples. The first issue has articles by Ambrose Heal, Hal Warwick, Henry Arthur Jones, S. P. B. Mais, Eleanor E. Helme, Irene Beeston and Rose Fyleman. The interview with H. G. Wells is on pp.3-5. Wells asks what the 'object' of the new magazine is, and is told, 'to foster and develop the reading and possessing of books'.

According to the title-page the library comprises 'Topographical and Genealogical Books, County Histories, including Nash's Worcestershire. Plot's Staffordshire. Dugdale's Warwickshire. Hutchins's Dorset. Whitelaw's Dublin. Berry's Genealogies. Publications of learned societies, etc.' In manuscript at head of title: 'MARKED CATALOGUE - PRICES REALISED'.

The prices, and in most cases the names of the purchasers, are untidily given in pencil, the buyers seeming to be mainly members of the West Country trade, and including George [of Bristol], Grey, Lowe, Colbeck, Cox Towes, Brown, Williams. A collection strongly biased towards the English novel, with Henry James particularly well represented. A small collection of 'Dutch Books' features at the end of the sale. A scarce item, with no copy traced either on COPAC or on WorldCat.

Described in an advertisement by the publisher in The Times, 16 July 1897, as 'A SOCIAL SATIRE.' Six copies on COPAC, but now a scarce item. Note: "In Pantalas Mr. Jenkins is at his best.

2pp., on a folio sheet (63 x 36cm). In fair condition, on aged and lightly-worn paper. Not filled in. Stamped '577' in red. One side listing the newspapers available from the Monday to the Friday of the week, and the other giving those on the Saturday, 'Odd Papers', 'BRANCHES' and 'TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SUPPLIES'. A range of periodicals is listed, including local and national newspapers, 'Continental Publications', comics ('Sparky', 'Wham' and 'Smash'), specialist ('Architect and Building News') and hobby ('Philatelic Mag.') magazines, 'Bolton Journal Series'

On one side of a piece of cm blue paper. Reads: 'April 25, 1855. | 33 Gloucester Place in the new Road | Received of Messrs Crace | The favour of loan of two spear axe pikes, and a body & helmet suit of armour, to be returned. | George Hayter | with Thanks & Compliments.'

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Tasteful letterhead including the firm's device within an oval, printed in sepia. In good condition: on aged and lightly-worn paper. King was the leading London parliamentary bookseller, and it is interesting to see him apparently offering a work of his own to other publishers. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir | We beg to acknowledge with thanks your offer of a translation of Herculano's "O Monge de Cister," which we much regret our inability to accept - our hands being very full just now, & all our arrangements for some time to come made.

The three items in fair condition, despite slight damp damage. The three letters are each 2pp., 12mo, on a bifolium. The first two letters concern his pamphlet 'England Crushed', which was published by the firm in 1882 under the pseudonym of 'Vindex', and has been attributed to William Garson. It is interesting to see that the pamphlets are printed up and ready for sale within eleven days of Baden-Powell's proposing them to the firm. Letter One: 18 April 1882. Headed 'Private'.

[1] + 24pp., 8vo. Stitched. In fair condition, on aged and lightly-spotted paper, with slight wear to edges of covers. A notice at the front reads: 'The Name following the title of a Book is that of the Donor. Where no Name is given, the Book has been obtained by purchase or by exchange.' The first two entries read: 'Ainsworth, William. Account of the Caves of Ballybunian. 1834. Henry Harris. | Airy's Lectures on Astronomy. 1849. F. F. Tuckett.' Loosely inserted are the replacement chart and a slip of paper carrying the note: 'BRISTOL NATURALISTS' SOCIETY.

In portrait on piece of 50 x 35 cm. paper, folded twice. Coloured in blue, brown, green and pink. Image 42.5 x 30.5 cm. Printed beneath image: 'Weekly Dispatch 139, Fleet Str. Day & Son, Lithors. to the Queen. Engraved by Edwd. Weller.' In good condition, lightly-aged with slight creasing to edges and a little wear along fold lines. The plan of the environs of Lucknow is 13.5 x 12.5 cm., in the top right-hand corner.

Attractive cover page, with text in a variety of types within decorative border: 'Price List. | OF | Wines and Spirits. | AVERY & SON, | Wine and Spirit Merchants, | TENTERDEN, | KENT.' Vignette at end of last page, with printer's slug at foot: 'W. THOMSON, TENTERDEN.' The list is divided into: clarets; burgundies; still hocks; champagne; sparkling samur, moselle, etc.; sherries; ports; marsala; madeira; spirits. Prices are usually given per dozen, for bottles and half-bottles.

The 71 letters total 160pp. (18pp., 4to; 128pp., 8vo; 14pp., 12mo), and are in excellent condition, on lightly aged paper, with most accompanied by stamped envelopes, which are addressed to 'W. L. Stanton Esq | Armscote | Stratford on Avon'. The first couple of letters are on letterheads of the Hotel Tivoli, 'Ancon, Canal Zone', with the others from 1912 headed 'Casilla [i.e. postbox] 1004, Valparaiso'; and those from 1913 onwards headed 'Las Salinas [Valparaiso]'. It appears to be a fair copy, in R.H.D. Barham's hand, possibly a copy retained by the author or a family copy of the first Memoir of R.H. Barham which appeared in the first edition of the Third Series of the Ingoldsby Legends (1847). According to the Preface to "The LIfe and Letters of the Rev.
