[Two printed items.] 'Correct Detail of the Ceremonies attending the Shakspearean Gala, celebrated at Stratford-upon-Avon' and 'Ode upon dedicating the Town Hall, and erecting a Statue to Shakspeare, during the Jubilee at Stratford-upon-Avon.
Both items bound together in nineteenth-century worn brown-cloth 8vo binding, with 'THE JUBILEE 1827' in gilt on the spine. Ownership inscription on front pastedown of the actor and theatrical writer Hallam Fordham, dated Oxford 1942. ONE: Full title: 'Correct Detail of the Ceremonies attending the Shakspearean Gala, celebrated at Stratford-upon-Avon, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, April 23, 24, and 25, 1827; Together with some Account of "Garrick's Jubilee," in 1769; By J. Jarvis, Reporter to the London Journals.' 30 + [1] pp., 8vo, with frontispiece depicting the 'Procession of Shakspeare's Characters at the Gala, 1827'. Bound in at the front is the printed front cover of the pamphlet, with decorative border, vignette and slightly-different title beginning 'A Correct Detail [...]'. Oval purple ownership stamp of 'ALEXANDER GARDYNE | 1883' on reverse of title. The final page carries an advertisement for Bacon and his 'Shakspearean Lounging Room, and General Repository, Stratford-upon-Avon'. In fair condition, on aged paper, with discoloured front cover. Uncommon (and rarer still with the printed front wrap still present): five copies on COPAC. TWO: Full title: 'Ode upon dedicating the Town Hall, and erecting a Statute to Shakspeare, during the Jubilee at Stratford-upon-Avon, 1769, by David Garrick, Esq.' 16pp., 8vo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Printer's slug beneath 'FINIS' vignette on p.16: 'Printed by John Bacon, Stratford-upon-Avon. 'Advertisement', dated 21 April 1827, pp.3-4. Rare: the only copy on COPAC at the British Library. No reference found on Google of the "Shakspearean Press", obviously an obscure provincial press.
