The three items in good condition, lightly-aged. The two letters signed 'Jack Squire' and the note 'J C S'. Totalling 7pp., in 12mo and 4to. ONE: ALS. On letterhead of the New Statesman; 'Thursday | dead hour of night', undated, but docketed 20 July 1915. An interesting letter, in the light of the fact that Lynd held Squire largely to blame for her husband's descent into alchoholism. He begins 'Dear Mrs Lynd, If I loathed you, as, on the whole, I do not, I should make a little poem e.g. | There was an M.S.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'E. Draper Esq'. He asks him to send 'the page of Freeman's [altered from 'Freemason's'] Journal mentioned in your Note to the Editor', and undertakes to return it safely, 'after inspection of the contents'.

2pp., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. The first page consists of a typescript in two columns, with names scored through and a few added in pencil. The second page has a few typewritten names, together with dozens added in pencil, clearly at different times. From 1919 the London Mercury's original editor J. C. Squire promoted the traditional verse of the Georgian Poets and their prose counterparts; on taking over in October 1934 Scott-James embraced the more fashionable modernist writing, and that change is reflected in the present list.

Joseph Schroder Moore, barrister (Post Office Directory 1846), brother to J.C. Moore ("The Letters of Thomas Hood", passim). Initially he is chasing up a manuscript promised by Hewlett. He then explains why the delivery of the manuscript was declined by his brother, suggesting that the proprietors of the Rejected's Magazine (see Francis Brown, #3130) would not have stopped its publication if his manuscript had come to hand.
