18 long letters, totalling 106pp., 4to, and 2pp., 8vo. Fourteen signed 'Seymour Fortescue' and four 'Seymour F'. Three with the year stated by Fortescue, ten others dated in pencil in another hand. Totalling 7pp., 12mo. All in good condition, on aged paper, except for the fourth, which has light water staining from the bases of a cup. The first three letters addressed to 'Mr. Reid', and the last two to 'Peter'. In the first letter Colvin discusses Redbourne House in Derbyshire, Salle Park, Norfolk, and Barrington Park, Gloucestershire. 'I am going to Burford on Thursday and will see if I can get a sight of the exterior despite the churlish owner.

Green half-leather, worn, one menu per day per page for most days between 22 Sept.1882 and 6 Jan. 1884. A bookplate is the only clue to the family the volume belonged to, the coat of arms and motto ("Loyaulté n a honte") of the Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyme, specifically at this time (1880s) Henry Pelham-Clinton, 7th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1864-1928) whose family seat was Clumber House, nr. Worksop, Notts (restored after a fire in 1879; http://lh.matthewbeckett.com/houses/lh_nottinghamshire_clumberhouse.html), presumably the home of this volume.
