She finds her current home "salubrious" for her children and herself. "John likes his occupations here and has received the most flattering letters of approval from the D. of Rutland." She concludes with the cold weather there and in Hampstead.

He thinks that "the man who alters the view of life of the world is a more important person" than the rose-grower "who makes his neighbourhood fragrant". Those who initiate are few. Hw would rather see wages increased, and the purchasing power of hte masses. He disklikes the tendencu to giving "bad value for money" - e.g. in his childhood the milkman would give extra just iun case of a shortfall. Today, it's exact measure or less.

Rumbold discusses the reception of a petition he sent to "Mr Fen[?]" saying that he is to get "immediate indemnification for the losses & expenses occasioned by the seizure of my Person, my imprisonment &c". Vincent is giving him support. He encloses his account, anticipates delay by the Treasury in paying but enlists his correspondent's help. His case was a cause celebre of the time, described in DNB as follows: "On the night of 25 Oct.

She is finding it difficult to secure Schweitzer's signature because he is busy or tired. She has tried on a Sunday when he writes letters and receives visitors but has still failed so far. Schweitzer has prmoised but has put the paper in a drawer. She describes his life, the effects of old age, and has enlisted the help of an old friend of his. She describes in detail her own rolein the hospital, and the background to her joining Schweitzer.

Hebrew Scholar. Four pages, 4to, good condition. He has been looking at a manuscript written by his correspondent on a theological subject. He criticises it, suggesting "expunging" one passage if he considers publication, and arguing with some of the biblical interpretation ("reign over the saints on a renewed earth . . ."). He explains his viewpoint of th earth post-Armageddon I suppose, rhapsodically. "The book of Revelations is to me for the most part a sealed book." He suggests his views are more suitable for the closet than the public.

Two pages, 4to, good condition. Ref. "Stourport", Powell is sending the "sketch" of a window (enclosed), giving subjects and making suggestions ("I thought the Ark would come well"). He has worked less bcecause of the light on this than on the "war memorial". He discusses the list of "angel subjects for your side aisle windows" (present as a third typed page), apart from themes which should have a window ti themselves. He favours fewer subjects, confirms that the Old Testament goes on the North aisle, New of the South.

He is unable to accept an invitation to Britwell (hence the identification of Samuel Christie-Miller as the correspondent) because he "cannot keep off the demands of the printers any longer, & I must work." He hopes, however, to welcome him to the Library (Windsor) and to have the invitation to Britwell repeated. He adds a paragraph about "the great loss all Bibliophiles have experienced in the death of Mr Thomas Watts of the British Museum.
