Detective Story Writer, sometime Chairman of the Crime Writers Association (1959/60). 14 ALSs, TLSs and TNSs, total 17pp., 8vo and 4to, 1958-1960, about CWA affairs - finances, the Dinner (with some incoming correspondence), the Japanese CWA, news from members, meetings, royalties on CWA Anthologies, an agent's malfeasance, a newspaper serial, Lorna Graeme's illness and death (see Bruce Graeme below), Sir Alan Herbert's Literary Project (Public Lending Rights), and the Society of Authors.

ALS, 14 Brookside, Cambridge; 19 August [1928], 2pp., 12mo. Written on returning the proofs of two articles. 'I see you have cut out my proof of the early intrusion of the Friar Tuck element into the Robin Hood cycle: - the only piece of information in the article which a student could not easily find elsewhere! However, I don't suppose any students will bother about any part of these articles except the Bibliographies, so it probably doesn't matter.' He continues with a few scholarly points.

Printer (d.1833). One page, c.7 x 3", signs of laying down, some marking but text decipherable. "Recd Jany 31, 1795, of Mr. John Stockdale by a Note at Ten Months) the Sum of Four Hundred & Seventeen Pounds 18/- for Printing & Hotpressing Perry's Pocket Dictionary, as per Bill delivered./ T. Bensley./ £417.18.0" Prob. William Perry's "General Dictionary of English Language" (Stockdale, London, 1795).

Novelist (1770-1844)(DNB). One page, 4to, bifoliate (blank except for Williams' name and address), some marking but text clear and complete. "I am much pleased with the design inclosed but have to observe that I think the tall boy a little too tall and that his trousers have more the look of a young sailor than those of e gentleman - the farmer boy is excellent - the lake scene very prettty and the whole satisfactory. I had great pleasure in naming you as an artist of great promise to Mr Newman who does a great deal of business & is a very worthy man and good judge of art . . . N.B.

Prime Minister (1770-1827), signed “G.C.”, 2pp., 8vo, good. He acknowledges correspondence and asks for copies of the “Civil ListPapers laid upon the House of Commons this year” and those of last year.He could borrow these from a “Mr Backhouse” but would rather not“break in upon his set”.

A small archive, items one page folio (unless ow stated) comprising: (1952) appointment of J.E. Briscoe to be Deputy of officer administering the Colony, royal stamp, signed by Colin Campbell (Colonial Secretary) ND Briscoe; (Jan.

Author and educationist. One page, 8vo, minoir defects, mainly good, text complete and clear. He describes the award of FRSL(?) (Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature?) as "much coveted" and says that membership might be a step towards it. One of his friends recommended by him has become a member. He describes Miss Eleanor Hull as "an outstanding Irishwoman of letters" - she has accepted membeship.

Lord Chancellor of Ireland (1796-1871). One page, 8vo, marginal damage. He thanks Streatfield for having his “Patent packed & despatched”,announcing its arrival.

Writer on Wine. One page, 4to, chipped, fold marks, yellowed but text clear. "Your inference with regard to that particular appendix is quite correct. The publishers did get cold feet and the appendix, to my considerable disgust, was omitted. / Apparently Messrs. Routledge felt that the British libel laws made publication of the facts with regard to dishonest shippers somewhat hazardous.

Ian Hay Beith, novelist. One page, 8vo. He is sending his autograph "with great pleasure" and apologising for delaying.

Autograph letter/order/list, top half lost, leaving frayed edge and some loss of text, generally poor condition but most of text clear.. Novelist, Daughter of Charles Kingsley (see DNB). Two surviving pages from a letter, 8vo, attached to card (ultimately from album leaf), tear at fold but complete and clear. Text: " He is a very clever little boy - He used to possess - and probably possess still - a power of committing small sins & contriving that other persons should bear the punishment of them, which almost amounted to genius. We used to call him Jacob - for there was an element of saintliness in his character too. / I hope you and Mrs Hunt may still cxome to Clovelly.

Physician and chemist (1751-1828). 1.25pp., fol. a fair amount of damage, marginally affecting the text. He has enclosed a “Proof Sheet to be laid before the next [meeting]”, subject to correction. He points out that the institution will not have the President he wished (see below) but his reason is clear. He speaks ofexpense being great at the beginning and discusses subscriptions,particularly for life. With (conjoined): a copy letter, one page, fol., from “Somerville” to Pearson, 20 Dec.

Australian Novelist, author of "Mystery of a Hansom Cab" (1886). One page, 8vo, suitable for framing, with bold signature, minor defects, text clear and complete as follows: Dear Sir, / Better late than never. Herewith the autograph you asked me for 14th February last / Yours faithfully, / Fergus Hume..

Architect (DNB). Two pages, 4to, marke and soiled but text clear and complete, laid down by conjugate blank leaf. He accepts their tender for "Plates & crown glass proposed to be furnished . . . to His Royal Highness the Duke of York, subject to " a satisfactory sample to the Clerk of Works "at the Buildings". He asks for prompt delivery of the sample so that the works may proceed immediately . He invites another tender, giving details.

Furniture Historian. Two letters SIGNED by Macquoid,one by amanuensis (he apologises for this - unwell). 3 pages, 4to, and 4 pages 8vo, good condition. He discusses matters which relate to their work on "A History of English Furniture" for which Slocombe provided illustrations - progress on a task; plans, wishes; contact with owners/aristos ;travels; suggestions; a sketch of a table; and so on. WITH: a page of notes in Slocombe's hand headed "oak furniture I am to paint"; a typed letter with ms.

Physician (1829-1900)(DNB). 2pp., 8vo, , traces of mounting, saying that, with the help of Lord Herschell, they can have their soiree in the Imperial Institute. He was prevented from going to “Huxley’s funeral”.

"Frank Fairleigh". Novelist (1818-1864). Three pages, 8vo, bifoliate, sl. dusted, mainly good. "Mr. Austen seems to have written word for word what you wished said abt. Tobacco, but if there is to be much attraction abt. the article, your clever pencil must put it in, for, as it stands it is dull as . . . I was going to add ditch-water ("water" underlined] but I beg to apologise for the inadvertence - as [page 2] the worst kind of fermented liquors! -/ I send by todays post a Prospectus to Mr.

Widow of Frank Harris. One page, 8vo, good condition. She reminds him that she signed a contarct for the publication of an abridged version of her "husband's "Book". "Life & Loves". She has yet to receive proofss for her approval, arguing that the book is not yet published. She asks when he will do so.

Pianist and composer (1847-1925). She has sent her correspondent a card (invitation) to a concert she is organising on behalf of the Church of St Augustine. She says she has made every effort to make it a success, and has persuaded all the artistes to give their services (free).

Miscellaneous writer on subjects such as angling, ports and harbours, tobacco, wood-engraving - and playing cards (see below(DNB):Three ALs, signed (1) and initialled (2) to Smith, [1848], total 4pp., various formats, one in poor condition with minor loss of text.(March) Chatto asks Smith for specific books.

Historical writer (see DNB). Two pages, 8vo, good condition. He says that he has read her "Wonderful Norse Tales" to his children with great pleasure. He is grateful for her remebering him and apologises for the effects of a paralysed right arm. "The work of writing, which was one of my greatest pleasures has now become a difficult & irksome {and] a painful task". He enjoys her success in their mutual "good cause".

Publisher (Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green)(1770-1837). One page, 8vo, trimmed, fold marks, grubby, text clear and complete."Dear Mill/As the Editor of the Annual Biography is proposing a Memoir of Mr Perry for that work, I shall feel obliged by any information with which you can favor him." Tennis player, one of the Four Musqueteers. One page, 4to, fold marks, very good condition. With original envelope (his initials and address printed on reverse. He is sorry not to have answered her last and thanks her for some books. "But I have been travelling a lot all over Europe and North Africa since the beginning of the month and am now leaving for South and North America.

Author, editor (1828-1895). One page, 12mo, trimmed and stained,laid down, but text clear and complete. "My money, my money, my ten pound notes in a letter: oh: I hope it is on the way. My marrow is dried up, and my bones crackle like unto the thorns under the pot. I hope the money is on its way. It must be. You ought to get this on Monday afternoon." Sala edited the newly established "Temple Bar" for Maxwell 1860-1866.

Three pages plus address page, 8vo, some damage and small holes marginally affecting text (including loss of part of name of writer). "Your son addressed me in very unbecoming language this evening respectiie my Debt to you on which subject I can declare most solemnly my entire beleif [sic] up to the present moment that Mr Ranken my Solicitor had paid you in February last[.] I am particularly sorry to find it is not the case & I have not seen him since that time. He will obtain some money for me the end of next month and I hope will give you the amount of your Debt the first.
