He writes playfully, expressing his gratification at the thought that his 'handiwork' has been so well received, and that she has 'at last conquered the doctrine of "Relativity." This will set you above the "erring crowd" for the remainder of your days.' Her brother David is 'not what we should wish: of all things, I hate debility.' After some personal news he turns to the reasons why he has not written an autobiography.

Including a seven-page speech by John Stuart Mill (pp.7-13); a speech of three and a half pages by the Rev. Charles Kingsley (pp.14-17); and others by Mrs Taylor; Thomas Hare; Boyd Kinnear; Lord Houghton; John Morley; Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, P. A. Taylor; Professor Masson; Mr Stansfield. 1p., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. He assumes his correspondent refers to an article which 'appeared long ago in the North British Review'. He has only 'a slight recollection of its nature or contents', but the correspondent is 'welcome, so far as I am concerned, to any use of quotations from it that may suit your purpose'.

2pp., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. In worn envelope, stamped and postmarked, and addressed by Masson to J. T. Baron, Esq., | 18 Griffin Street, | Wilton, | Blackburn.' He discusses 'British Novelists and their Styles' and 'Essays, Biographical and Critical', before turning to a third work. 'The sketches in Macmillan about which you enquire have not been reprinted in a collected form, & are accessible only in the old numbers of the magazine.' He gives Professor J. S. Blackie's address, and concludes: 'Accept my best thanks for the courteous expressions of your note.'

The three items, all in manuscript, are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All three are folded into the usual packets, with the two items by the accountants each titled in manuscript on the outside. Item One (Gibson's report): 'Report to accompany the Accounts of "Vanity Fair" for the six months ending 30th. Septr. 1880'. In Bowles's autograph, and signed by him at the foot, 'Thos. G. Bowles | 10 Novr 1880'. 1p., foolscap 8vo.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter reads: 'My dear Ella: | It wd be very kind if you cd come to see me as I have never recovered & am downstairs again. - Will you come to tea to-day or tomorrow. I want somebody to play with me!'

Biographer of Robert Louis Stevenson. Paper dimensions roughly four and a half inches by one and a quarter. Very good. Taken from autograph album and mounted on larger piece of cream paper. Reads 'Yours very affectionately | Rosaline Masson.'
