ROLLESTON

1p., landscape 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Reads: 'Yes, I feel sure that at the time I pencilled in C. L. Dodgson, the author of Alice in Wonderland etc. The Rev. R. St. John Tyrwhitt was a resident in Oxford, and the note may have been addressed to him across the table? He was the father of the present Admiral Sir R. J. Tyrwhitt.'

1p., 4to. On a leaf removed from an autograph album, under the date 'MAY 1', and within a red and green decorative border. The poem consists of sixteen lines in four stanzas, the first stanza reading: 'When the time comes for me to die, | To morrow - or some other day - | If God should bid me make reply: | "What wilt thou?" - I shall say,'. (In the published version 'What wilt thou?' reads 'What woud'st thou?') On the reverse of the leaf is a text and signature by an "Ethel Mengens".

Both letters good, on lightly-aged paper. The second letter in envelope addressed by Mosley to 'Peter Reid Esq | 68 New Cavendish Street | London W1 M 7 LD [sic] | Angleterre'. Letter One (2pp., 12mo): She begins: 'My husband asked me to answer your letter. I think we have got photographs of Rolleston, but all such things are stored in Ireland, where we used to have a house. When I go through them (which one day I must) I will send you what I find.

Wade A289. 12mo: viii + 80 pp and errata slip. In original cream buckram binding, with title and harp decoration in gilt on front board. Black endpapers. Internally tight, on aged and spotted paper. Binding grubby, stained and worn, with slight damage at head and foot of spine. Some ink marking to the fourth stanza of the dedicatory poem to John O'Leary (p.1). Housed in a green solander box. Inscribed at head of title: 'Elizabeth Monteagle from Rose Kavanagh | June 21. 88'.
