DODGSON

Austin (1895-1973) was a British etcher, engraver and watercolourist. R.A. Walker (born 1886), whose bookplate is on the front pastedown, was a connoisseur and Aubrey Beardsley scholar. Quarto, twenty-six leaves. Internally tight, clean and sound, in worn and stained half-leather binding, with 'ROBERT AUSTIN' in gilt on spine. The item contains a total of forty-seven reproductions of Austin's works, many gleaned from magazines, etc, and tipped in throughout.

Printed in black on one side of a 12.5 x 17 cm card. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper, with a little light staining. To the right of the page is an illustration by Tenniel of Mr Punch holding Yorick's skull, while a pug dog looks on. Text reads: 'Sir John Tenniel requests the honour of a visit from [blank] and friend, On Saturday, March 30th, To the Private View of some of his Drawings for "Punch Cartoons," etc., At the Fine Art Society's, 148, New Bond Street. 10 to 6 o'clock.'

1p., landscape 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Reads: 'Yes, I feel sure that at the time I pencilled in C. L. Dodgson, the author of Alice in Wonderland etc. The Rev. R. St. John Tyrwhitt was a resident in Oxford, and the note may have been addressed to him across the table? He was the father of the present Admiral Sir R. J. Tyrwhitt.'

2pp., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. On ruled wove paper with Monckton watermark. Sixty-line poem in ten six-line stanzas. An early parody of Lewis Carroll's 'The Walrus and the Carpenter'; the original was published in 'Alice Through the Looking-Glass' in 1871. The first stanza reads: 'The Prelate & the Protestants | Were walking to and fro. | They wept to see the Altar Screen | Their tears began to flow. | Tis very sad the Prelate said.

3pp., 8vo. The second page mispaginated '(3)'. Bifolium. One punch hole to top inner corner of each leaf (for the attaching of the item to others), affecting two words of text, pencil shelfmarks and the number '16.' in red ink at head of first page. Lightly creased on aged paper, with three horizontal fold lines. Williams and Madan 282B ('The Lewis Carroll Handbook', pp.198-199).

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with a small closed tear to one edge. He informs the recipient that his portrait of Garrick is 'the second state of the engraving: the first is before all letters. | The person who engraved the lettering evidently made a mistake.' He notes an inscription sometimes found on impressions of the second state of the engraving, and change made in the third state.

Pp.[xviii].268, 8vo, endpapers foxed, sl. hinge strain, in slightly worn and dulled dj, frontis. portrait, illus., mainly book in very good condition. ENCLOSED: A. Two Autograph Letters Signed "Evelyn M. Hatch", both to Falconer Madan, bibliographer of Lewis Carroll, [Printed heading] 17 Pembroke Gardens, W8, 19 September 1933 and 13 November 1933: Letter One (Sept.) She anticipoates the publication of her "Letters" and reveals the "howler" in the announcement ("Nine or ten" wise words, rather than "Eight or Nine", describing her vexation.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. With mourning border. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The letter begins: 'My dear Yonge, | I dare say you remember my telling you of the proposed series of educational books to be issued from the Clarendon Press, Oxford, and asking whether your sister would be willing to undertake any English books, if the Delegates of the Press should make an offer to her.

Letter: 4 pp, 12mo. Bifolium. 36 lines. Text clear and complete. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. He addresses him 'as Provisional Secretary to the Abbotsford Subscription Committee', to inform him that he has instructed his bankers in Newcastle to transmit forty pounds from his account to bankers in the Strand, 'to be added to the Abbotsford Fund - being the Amount collected in small sums between 1.£ & 1.s. by Mrs. Liddell in the town of Alnwick & vicinity'. She will forward a book of subscribers' names to the Committee.

On one side of a piece of wove paper roughly 18 x 12 cm. Headed 'ADVERTISEMENT.' and signed in type 'LEWIS CARROLL. | Christmas, 1893.' Twenty-eight lines of text. In good condition on lightly-aged and spotted paper. Begins 'For over 25 years, I have made it my chief object, with regard to my books, that they should be of the best workmanship attainable for the price.

Four pages, 12mo. Mourning border. Aged and spotted, with remains of three mounts adhering to one edge. She is enclosing a note from 'Miss Yonge', and 'one from Miss Roberts [Margaret Roberts] who wrote "Madlle Mori", "In the Olden Time", "The Atelier du Lys" &c. She refers to Miss Yonges mother in her note'. She is also sending a note 'from Mr. Dodgson too. Who is "Lewis Caroll'. (Alice in Wonderland) - & one from Isa Craig - now Mrs. Knox.

Art historian (1867-1948) and Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, 1912-32. Four pages, 12mo. Good, but somewhat grubby with a few small stains. Interesting, and characteristically subtle solicitation. He has been examining the book of drawings his correspondent sent the previous week, but is unable to say who formed the collection: 'my colleagues in the library cannot tell anything from the elephant stamped on the binding'. 'The little drawings are mostly old but not of any great merit'.
