DAPHNE

A friend of Dylan Thomas and a leading poet of the 1930s London literary scene, Dyment is the subject of a warm appreciation by Robert Graecen in The Times, 8 June 1971. The present collection consists of a series of amusing poems regarding various members of the animal kingdom. ONE: Typescript of 'Fur, Feather, and Fin | by | Clifford and Marcella Dyment'. Address at foot of title-page: 'Flat 5, 53, Harrington Gardens, London, S.W.7.' 46pp., 8vo. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged paper.

44pp., landscape 8vo. In book in columns and title on cover, on which Kayton has written 'CAPT (MISS) KAYTON'. 308 operations are listed by Kayton, the first 298 being numbered. After no. 264 (18 March 1946), in another hand: '29th March 1946 | This is to certify that Capt Miss D. Kayton has administered the above number of anaesthetics and has acted as deputy anaesthetist at 106 General Hospital B.A.O.R. [British Army of the Rhine] throughout the last 5 months. | Goodwin D.A. | Specialist Anaesthetist 106 General Hospital'.?>

Circa 78pp., used, some pages added, text worked over, red boards, hinge strain, mainly good condition. Indexes to Acts, lines through manysections. Contents include: questions for Wilfred [Josephs] ("Sets? | Scenes? | Act II???"]; stage directions; suggestions about characters; directions; music ("(5) Mrs v H [van Hopper] tells A. she is hopeless against Rebecca"); "final faults"; sets; dialogue; problems; phone numbers and addresses; more (detailed) points for Wilfred [Josephs]; suggested lines for a duet; characters with actors' names e.g. Mrs v. H[oppen] Nuala Willis (as happened); etc.

4to, 169 pp. Limitation details on reverse of title, with firm signature by Fraenkel. Internally sound and tight, on aged paper; in original printed wraps over boards, with binding strained and worn. In worn and damaged original slipcase. A few annotations in light pencil in the margin, possibly by Fraenkel's wife Daphne. Loosely inserted are the book's prospectus (4to bifolium, 4 pp), and by an order form for the books, with reviews, to the Motive Book Shop of Waco, Texas. From the Carrefour Press Archives, and with a long pencil note by its owner Michael Harris on the front board.

All three items lightly aged but good. Driberg has written 'TOM DRIBERG' at the head of the first page of both reviews. First Review (8vo, 7 pp) with slight wear at head (not affecting text) of first four leaves; last three leaves on House of Commons letterheads. With corrections. The subject is Daphne Fielding's 'The Rainbow Picnic' (1974). Second Review (8vo, 7 pp, on House of Commons letterheads) of four books about crossword puzzles, including Roger Millington's 'The Strange World of the Crossword' (1974). With corrections.
