Two identical fliers for the society (giving its 'Purpose') loosely inserted. The collection is in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, but with rusted staples to all volumes. Hunnings and Gillett are named as editors of the first four volumes, thereafter Hunnings alone.

Following her husband's death, she writes 'I have been trying to find my way through, so that I might be able to do as Herbert would wish, and make up to the children for what they have lost. [...] I am so glad now to think of the years we had in Kerry where Herbert was able to do what he liked best of all'. From the Lynd Archive, and with note at head of first page from Maire Gaister (daughter of Robert and Sylvia Lynd): 'Widow of Herbert Hughes, who collected Irish songs orally.'

An informative collection of material, mainly relating to Australia, assembled in the years immediately following the First World War. The collection consists of fifty items: twenty-one typescripts (1-21), twenty-eight manuscripts (22-49), and one printed (50). Dated items range from 1919 to 1924, with the others appearing to date from around the same time. All items clearly legible, and all except item 2 complete. All but item 50 on loose leaves of paper.

In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Folio, 110 pp, comprising [i] + 68 + [ii] + 39 pp. Handsome volume in slipcase, tight and internally in very good condition, on lightly-aged thick Whatman paper. Well bound in black leather morocco, all edges gilt. Binding blind-tooled and with 'Early Days' and 'W. V. S.' in gilt on spine and motto on front board: 'Nourish the sentiments thy principles approve and put thy trust and confidence in God.' Binding worn and rebacked, in worn black cloth slipcase.

4to, 169 pp. Limitation details on reverse of title, with firm signature by Fraenkel. Internally sound and tight, on aged paper; in original printed wraps over boards, with binding strained and worn. In worn and damaged original slipcase. A few annotations in light pencil in the margin, possibly by Fraenkel's wife Daphne. Loosely inserted are the book's prospectus (4to bifolium, 4 pp), and by an order form for the books, with reviews, to the Motive Book Shop of Waco, Texas. This archive records the day-by-day response to the Great War of a cultured and intelligent English newspaper editor operating outside the Fleet Street hegemony. It charts his change of opinion from initial optimism (8 August 1914: 'The instinct is to strike - it is nature's own law.

12mo, 1 p. Five lines of text. Very good on lightly aged paper. Good firm signature. He is sending the first issue of the 'Revue Synthétique' and proposes an exchange of that magazine for the one that the recipient edits.

The collection is in good condition, on lightly aged and slightly creased paper. Text of all items clear and entire. Letter One: to Jean-Augustin Barral (12 June 1862, from 33 Rue de Vaugirard, 8vo, 2 pp, 30 lines). He has received 'les premières feuilles de votre notice', and has been prevented from coming to London by 'un rhumatisme articulaire'. On the recto of the second leaf of the bifolium is Barrel's nine-line autograph reply, signed 'J. A. Barrel' and dated 'Londres 16 juin 1862'.

Hand (1907-86), an authority on American folklore, was Professor of Germanic Languages and Folklore at the University of California, Los Angeles. 9 pages (paginated as stated), octavo. In very good condition in light-blue printed card wraps. Minor spotting and discoloration. A 'survey, essentially, of the physical harm wrought by conjurers, [...] a discussion of sickness and disease, and other categories of physical impairment, and [...] a consideration of the nature of the magic employed, and the various circumstances and conditions under which it is carried out'.

The receipts are of irregular size, the smallest being 2 inches by 6 inches, and the largest 10 inches by 7 inches. The collection in very good condition overall with only a few items affected by slight spotting, creasing, fraying and discoloration from age. Occasional interesting information on the working of the rural artisan in the itemisation of some of the receipts.
