The recipient is beyond doubt: the two men were friends with shared interests, and among the Driberg papers are letters from Hamilton signed 'Gérard'). Driberg is delighted to hear that Hamilton is feeling better: 'Would you be allowed to come over to Bradwell to lunch with me? If so, I might manage next Saturday. I could call with the car. Drop me a line at the House of Commons; [last four words underlined] that is the best address'.

The full title reads: 'An Amateur Concert will take place in Mr. Gibson's Show Room, Eynsford, (Kindly lent for the occasion) On Wednesday, December 15th, 1869. | The Proceeds will be expended in the purchase of Coals, to be distributed previous to Christmas, among the poor of the Village.' Nine committee members are named on the first page, with details of tickets (to be 'obtained of any of the Committee, or Mr. T. M. G. Sharwood, Farmingham').

Reads: 'I shall probably look in at your homes on Monday | Yrs trly | [signed] W Carus Wilson | Aug 26 | Carterton Hall | Kirby Lonsdale'. Wilson ran Clergy Daughters' school which the Bronte sisters attended (fictionalised as ''Lowood' in 'Jane Eyre'). Charlotte Bronte blamed the harsh conditions at the school for the early deaths of her two elders sisters, and for the ill-health of her younger sisters, Anne and Emily.

Folio, 50 pp. Stitched. In original blue printed wraps. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly-stained paper. In worn and chipped wraps. Front wrap carrying the stamp and withdrawal stamp of the University of Hull. Scarce. Only one "electronic resource" recorded.

One page, quarto. On aged and creased paper. The letterhead, in purple and red, features an illustration of a theatre curtain. He is 'looking forward to receiving a set of Galley Proofs' of Vale's book ('Trust House Story', 1952?). On receipt he will 'make a number of rough sketches for the Wrapper and send them along to you; then if you think any of them are interesting I can produce more finished versions for you to see.'
