He asks her to choose between Lawrence and Palestine as subjects for his talk, or"Atlantic to Gulf" (REVERSE: one page of extenssively corrected manuscript of an article about Palestine in 1918, Allenby, effect of the Balfour Declaration, Military Administration - Storrs being present); (April 1944) He suggests a talk entitled "From Portugal to Persia in War"; (1946) He is unable to accept a luncheon appointment. The most substantial letter is sl. damaged, marginally affecting text. 5 items,

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, some staining but text clear and complete, as folows: "Sir | In answer to your letter of the 2d. I beg to state I am quite certain that Lord Randolph would not entertain for a moment the suggestion you make..."

Archaeological surveyor of India. 2pp., 8vo. He discusses the personnel of the Survey, the senior position to be filled, and what he would do if he were in charge. (He was Director General from 1886 to 1889.)

Iin French. One page, 8vo. He is sorry that he does not know Gerard (Gerhard) Hauptmann's work well enough to "rendre . . . hommage", pass judgement not sufficiently "motive", "ne serait pas digne du poete dont une sorte de justice litteraire immanente m'a appris a venerer le nous(?)". (Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize for literature in this year, 1912.)

Scottish judge (1837-1905). 6pp., 8vo, discussing in detail the expropriation of estates from an absent person and the implications and powers of the "Presumption of Life Limitation (Scotland) Act of 1881".

5pp., 8vo. He discusses some proofs of engravings he has sent, for which his correspondent has shown insufficient enthusiasm. He would like them back. He says he is prepared to "make Pictures of Animals from Photographs, in fact he has done so. He discusses colouring, oil or water colour. His main line is portrait-painting, he says, either in London or at "Gentlemen's seats", giving his rates.

Wife of Prime Minister. 2-5pp., 8vo. Extensive eulogising of her husband, H.H. Asquith, and condemnation of his enemies. (Asquith was replaced by Lloyd George in 1916.) Three items,

Vice-President of the Royal Asiatic Society, etc. (significant in Ceylon) (1775-1849). "Mr Vigne {traveller, incl. Tibet] who has just returned from a seven year tour which he has made through Thibet Cachmere (sic) Cabul & Candahar . . ." has given Lady Johnston (his wife) permission to see his drawings at the Asiatic Society. He also is going and invites his correspondent and Mrs Stanhope to join them.

Naturalist and miscellaneous writer. One page, 8vo. He says that he is about to leave for the Sudan and apologises for his discourtesy in not replying sooner. With: holograph list, 2pp., 8vo, of works by Robinson and key dates, events, and positions in his life, including a professorship in India, work for newspapers, authorship of a fishing brochure. His adventurous life was thought to have ended in the bush on Cuba where he was to have reported on the Spanish-American War.

Wood engraver2pp., 8vo. Staining not obscuring the text. He promises to go to his house to "sign the Return you speak of" and announces a recent change of address.

Pianist and composer (1847-1925). She has sent her correspondent a card (invitation) to a concert she is organising on behalf of the Church of St Augustine. She says she has made every effort to make it a success, and has persuaded all the artistes to give their services (free).

Traveller in Spain and elsewhere, and author. 2-4pp., 8vo. He discusses extensively his work on "a Handbook on Russia & Great Britain in Central Asia", giving a resume of chapters and asking for copies to be sent to various places. "No question is more important at present". FOUR ITEMS,

Newspaper editor (1846-1932). One page, 8vo, acknowledging good wishes for his 70th birthday.

Author and positivist (1831-1923). 4pp., 4to, He is responding to an appeal from the "Gould Committee", formed when Gould ceased to be teacher for the Moral Education League. Harrison goes into detailed discussion of the implications, prophesying economic difficulties for years to come.

Actor and theatre manager (DNB). One page, some damage marginally affecting the text. He thanks him for his gift of the poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade".

(Tenniel) artist and cartoonist (18201914). Green has been asked by Tenniel, to write on his behalf. He explains that Tenniel is now blind and infirm. He [passses on the opinion that the artists their correspondent has named "all stood out in thier respective spheres, and were among the cleverest black & white artists of the century in their particular styles".

One page, 8vo. French rights of "The Brass Bottle" already settled. With: Autograph Letter Signed, one page, 8vo, F.W. Pemberton, on Anstey's behalf, to Mrs Fisher on the same matter. Two items,

Scottish painter (1796-1864).Good Signature of Roberts and others (Calder Marshall and Witherington and one illegible).clipped from an appeal to the Artists' Benevolent Fund.

Scottish lawyer and politician, friend of Walter Scott (1751-1839). 2pp., 4to, good condition. He is submitting letters to his correspondent for him to "peruse" and plans a discussion of "the matter" in a carriage. A note has been added "Of Sir Walter Scott" ( Scott died 21 Sept. 1832, and Adam was a friend), but there is no internal evidence of this.

Sculptor (1814-1877). 2pp. & one page, 8vo. He initially discusses the "distresses" of someone called Hone, presumably an artist, how £50 would enable him to provide for himself and his family. Advertisements about Hone's situation have been placed and presumably they hope for contributions. The second letter appears to concern contributions from Wigram and Tupper. 2 items,

Painter. One page, 8vo. He says that he had promised him "something or other" by the end of August. Pre-occupation with the third volume of his reminiscences has so far prevented him doing whatever it was.

Historical painter (1816-1879). 3 & 2pp., 8vo. (4 Sept.) He is doing his best to facilitate the sale of a painting through a friend ("Haynes"), "the de Witt picture", owned by a Col. Gordon. The market for "luxury" items is affected by the depression, but he hopes for an upturn. He admires both the de Witt and "the portrait of Mary". (28 Sept.) He will do his best with regard to both pictures but outlines problems. 2 items,

Artists/engravers. Signatures of Edward Finden, William Finden, W.T. Collard (? and Henry(?) Corbould cut from document in which a needy artist appeals to the Artists' Benevolent Fund. On the reverse is part of his plea.

Painter, essayist and critic (1841-1902). He explains why he cannot go on an excursion. He expects to have to paint a python on the point of shedding its skin.

Journalist and police magistrate (1818-1891). 2pp., 8vo. Statement of Account for contributions to the "Miscellany", countersigned by Know three times. "Wellesley" attributes the articles listed in these statements to John Hamilton Reynolds, Keats's friend.

Viscount, soldier, G.-G. of India. (Croker) asks for assistance for lady whose sons died on naval duty. (Hull) he has passed on his note about forgery to Peel. (Attorney-General) asks him to look at a Bill he wants to go before the House. (Singleton) he discusses the circumstances of the death of Huskisson (run over by a train) and other business including "O.G. Mahon", Lord Westmeath's speech ("coarse invective agt the D of W and so grossly indecent"), Shiel's speech, O'Connell ("influence greatly declined"), General O'Neill and other matters. Four items,

Politician (1722-1788). He died "leaving half a million of public money" (quoted in DNB). The signatures appear by the superscription, one is initialled. (1760) He has heard that there are "letters in Town from Ireland which say, That Volumes are writing there against transmitting a money Bill". He wonders if Wilmot has heard anything. (1761) He would "be glad our Letters & Bills and all our business was despatched in due time" since he wishes to make up a party with some Ladies to play at Loo. 2 items,

Irish philosopher and political economist. 3pp., 8vo. He addresses Hamilton as "President" and refers to the "Society" in Belfast. He explains that J.A. Froude is more selective about engagaments as he gets older and is unlikely to accept an invitation from the "Society". He recommends a direct approach. He expresses pleasure at the performance of the "Belfast students" and adds a postscript about candidates for the "English Chair in the college".

Spanish author. Two pages, 4to. He writes concerning the World Unity Movement of which Polak is a sponsor, criticising the Chairman, James Avery Joyce. With: a TLS, 2pp., 4to, from Joyce to Polak referring to a note he has received from de Madariaga (copy enclosed) and describing his difficulties in finding a speaker. He also asks for his expenses from an American trip which de Madariaga found offensive.

Governor-General of India. 5 & 2pp., 8vo. Some illegible. (1830) he asks himself whether the "Board" should reply to "the Statements and Assumptions of the . . . Secret Committee in the subject of the Secret Letters relating to the Treaty with . . .(?)". He continues on the theme, concluding that ther documents in question had been perused by Lord Clare, the intended successor of Sir John Malcolm" (Governor of Bombay). (1841) he is trying to arrange a meeting.
