A long letter, addressed to an unnamed English recipient (perhaps the editor of an literary journal) interested in news of Austrian literary culture. The letter contains references to: 'the polyglott Georgian', 'the new litterary [sic] gazette', 'Mr.

166pp., 12mo. Internally in good condition, on lightly-aged paper; in worn quarter-binding. Author's inscription on front free endpaper: 'Florence & Genoa | Italy | May 1871 | Mary Cecilia Blencowe'. Two diaries in one volume, the first beginning midway through the account.

One page, 12mo, small closed tear on fold, ow good. "Monsieur Alfred Grandidier présente ses compliments au Secrétaire de Savage Club et accepte avec plaisir l'invitation qui lui a été faite pour demain samedi à 9h1.2 [9.30]."

Piece of paper cut from letter, c.10 x 3.5cm, good condiiton. Part of text, posibly about travels, survives on verso, "town incur such a large [expenditure?] - on such a secondary question as good drinking water. I told him we would [word lost] him, his action being". On the recto, the subscription reads, "my [wife?] yours in kindest regards | Sincere [?] | H Blanc".

[50] leaves (rectos numbered only), 4to, stiff boards, good condition, typescript, annotated by the author, additions, corrections, excisions, who has inscribed the recto of the free endpaper "Harry Graham. || Royal Court. | Palace of Westminster. | London, S.W. | England". The scene is set in Charlotte Corday's prison cell, and the dramatis personae listed are Charlotte herself; Francois Chabot (Deputy for the Departement of Loir-et-Cher; Jean-Jacques Hauer, A Young Artist; Richard, Warder at the Conciergerie Prison; Charles-Henry Sanson, Public Executioner.

Total 4pp., 12mo, good condition. Letter 1 (25 Jan. 1946) He gives brief biographical detail, showing prior acquaintance, and praises an article of Bilainkin on Yugoslavia in the magazine 'Illustrated'. He says the Anglo-Jewish Asociation is "considering the publication in the near future of a National Jewish Monthly Magazine [...] and the Publicity Committee have asked me to approach you to become a co-opted member". He suggests lunch.

The two letters and flier are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper; the cutting is on aged newsprint, separated into two parts along a crease line. Letter One (17 December 1896): 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. He informs the recipient that, as the review list for the book is closed, its publishers Wightman & Co have sent on the reviewer's letter to Musgrave. 'We are following this course as much interest exists between the North Country & West Africa.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of mount adhering to the reverse. The note reads: 'My dear Murray, | I hope you have not forgotten your promise to dine with me this evening, at Willis' Rooms, at 7 o'clock precisely. | Yours very truly | P. B. Du Chaillu'. Murray's published du Chaillu's books from 1861 to 1903.

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium (second leaf blank), good condition. "I very much regret that I am not well enough to be present at the unveiling of the statue of Huxley tomorrow, which I had been looking forward to see. I got a chill last Saturday when it was so hot & have had an abscess in the ear, which has just released itself, but it would not do to go out in the cold air [...]"

One page, 8vo, slightly crumpled and stained but text clear and complete, as follows: I remember that at Brussels there used to be female cooks who knew french and english cooking, could you find me one which knoiws well the english way [...] I should be glad to have one who could cook my dinner in regular english style with puddings, tarts, etc etc? I [want?] a quiet honest woman to whom I can confide the care of the small house I have at Aranjuez - the wages are indifferent. | Write to me if such a person is to be found and excuse the trouble I give you [...].

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed, with oval red postmark and broken red wax seal, on reverse of second leaf of bifolium to 'E. V. Utterson Esqre | 32 York Terrace | Regents park'. She writes that she and her husband are 'sorry to have so bad an account of Mrs Utterson', whom she will visit 'when she can see her friends'. 'Mr. Callcott [the landscape painter Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844)] was in York Terrace yesterday but having forgotten your number & finding you denied at three or four doors he began to think you had moved or that I had given him a wrong direction'.

1p., 12mo. Very good, within thin paper windowpane mount. She writes 'Dear Mr. Chichester:- | I return statement. Please have it corrected according to "White Islander" contract, and send me the check early in February. And I shall be obliged.' Docketed by Chichester 'Ansd. 1. 30' and 'Corrected State. sent | Sent Ck $186.66'.

One page, 12mo, faint marking and slightly grubby, text clear and complete. "I will be at No 10 Downing Street at 2. pm. on Tuesday, as kindly appointed by Mr. Balfour. I sent you the Slavery Memo this afternoon." Online biographies (Wikipedia and DNB) mention his activities indicating that he was anti-slavery (in the main!), but don't mention activity resulting in a Memo. According to the DNB disappointments in England drove him back to Africa in 1895. Perhaps this was it.

[1898 letter], 2pp., 4to, closed tear on fold but mainly good, text complete and clear. "Here the answer to that vicious article in the Desdener Zeitung" [perhaps he had enclosed a letter or article - no longer present]. He asks for a careful copy and that Armstrong sign it and send it to the newspaper. "They must publish it on the strength of p.11 of our press law" subject to legal penalty. It will make a betetr impression if you sign it as I have spoken in it of my own risks(subscription of £2000 etc.etc)".

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium with mourning border. Fair, on lightly-aged and creased paper. He thanks him for the grouse ('very greatly appreciated') and thinks that 'the show at York went off first class'.

Explorer (1856-1933), and commander of Prisoner of War Camp during the Great War. Three pages (with the third, including the signature, written crosswise), 12mo. In very good condition. He has been away and apologises for not replying to her 'kind invitation' sooner. He is disappointed not to be able to accept, as he should have liked to have had 'a chat with you & your husband'. Signed 'Henry de Windt'.

8vo, 2 pp. Bifolium. Thirty-two lines of text. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. It is only now that he is able to thank him for the 'bon accueil que m'a fait Monsieur Benard grâce à votre Gracieuse recommendation'. Benard has lent him 'quelques ouvrages', including 'ceux que vous aviez bien voulu <?> sur la petite note'. He has not had time to look at them, 'pressé que j'etais tout d'abord de vous remettre ceux que vous m'avez bien voulu prêter'. He has not been able to 'les compulser', but has 'sommairement lu le contenu qui je l'espere me suffira'.

4to, 1 p. Fourteen lines of text, on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. Text clear and complete, on lightly aged and creased paper. Slight staining at foot of text (affecting part of signature), and on the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium, which is docketed 'la renaudié | A. S.' He is sending an article on 'la Bibliotheque des voyages'. Asks that the article on the work entitled 'Des Beaux arts en Angleterre', 'que Buisson vous adressa il ya prés de Deux mois', be inserted. 'Je vous prie en grace de laisser ma Signature en entier.

Linguist, writer and traveller (1792-1872). One page, octavo. Lightly creased and with a few closed tears. Reverse adhering to page from autograph album. Reads 'My dear Sir | Herewith the promised letters - | Yours most truly | John Bowring'. Docketed on reverse.

Miscellaneous writer and traveller in Greece and the Far East (1758?-1841), DNB. Two autograph letters signed, edges discoloured, texts clear and complete. (7 March) "Sir/ I yesterday received your new Catalogue in which I find two articles which I am desirous of having No 2634. Belon (Pierre) & 3440 Ranwolfs Travels. provided they are in pefectly good condition [underlined from "as"] [.] I possess a copy of the same edition of Belon, but it [superscript] being very much stained I should be glad to get another that is perfectly well preserved.

Author (died 1905) of the Icelandic travel guide 'By fell and fjord'. Two pages, 12mo. In good condition although grubby and with traces of mount adhering to verso and stub adhering along one edge. 'I am glad to say that I find the tickets in the row we are in - for the Reid Concerts on Friday, are not all gone - & excellent places - I enclose 2 - at 8/ each - 16/-.
