ONE: Autograph Petiton Signed. 'Unto the Right Honble. Lord John Russell Secrety of State &c &c | The Petition of Samuel Cleland residing near St George Dumfries Upper Canada'. 2pp., foolscap 8vo. In poor condition, aged and worn at edges, with one corner apparently nibbled away by mice. At least some of the damage would appear to be contemporary with the document, as Cleland has written within the boundaries of the loss to the corner, and there is no loss to text. Docketed in red at head '1091 U. Canada' and stamped 'Received | C. D. | June 1 1840'.

Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with red ink postmark and broken black wax seal, to 'David Williamson Esqr | Advocate | George's Square | Edinh'. There is no indication in the letter that the two men are kinsmen. 'My Dear Sir, | I am happy to inform you that the ship called the Nevis Planter sails from Liverpool for St. Kitts on the 12th. Inst - with your approbation, I propose sailing with her - | Mr.

The whole of the first page is filled in the same hand in two columns, with the first column beginning '4 Cops, 1 Peck, or "Sleek"; i.e. a sleekit peck - not a heaped one, as with potatoes or apples. | 4 pecks make 3 Imperial or Winchester bushels. | 1 Carlisle Bushel is 4. pks. 1 or 3 imp. Bushels.' The right-hand column begins: '1. Imp. Bush. of Barley weighs 56 lbs. The common sized cart will hold 24 pks. (or sleeks): or 18 Imp.

Six manuscript bills and one letter from Edinburgh and Dumfries tradesmen

Janet Maxwell married William Maxwell in Buittle Parish on 3 September 1839, and died three years later. The nine items, in good condition on lightly-aged paper, provide a fascinating insight into the requisites and cost of an early Victorian Scottish middle-class wedding, from the wedding 'pelisse' to the 'bride's cake'. Letter: 4to, 1 p (32 lines); and 8vo, 2 pp (42 lines) in bifolium. Total of 74 lines. Texts of letter and offprint clear and complete. Both on aged and creased paper, and attached to one another by archival tape. Offprint 4to, 8 pp (paginated 81-88). I n the letter Greenhill writes 'My acquaintance with Somerset brasses is but scanty, all I ever rubbed being at Hutton, Cheddar, Churchill, Wedmore, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, Crewkerne, and the Strode brass at Shepton Mallet.

Manuscript volume, written out by MacKinnell, including apparently unpublished 'Notes from the Lectures of Professor Ramsay, Private Humanity Class 1848 & 1849' and 'Notes on Roman Agriculture Taken from the Lectures of Professor Ramsay 1847 & 1848'.

12mo (leaf dimensions roughly 18 x 11.5 cm): paginated by MacKinnell from 1 to 309. In contemporary half-binding with black leather spine and corners and marbled boards. Internally tight, sound and clean, in worn binding with some loss at head of spine. Closely written in a neat hand, and floridly inscribed on front free endpaper 'William Mac Kinnell | Dumfries | December 7th. | 1849'.

Scottish nobleman (1726-1803). Ross (1742-1827; DNB), with Dundas, negotiated the surrender of Yorktown on Cornwallis's behalf. Two pages, quarto. Text entirely legible, but in poor condition, on stained, discoloured paper frayed at edges. Competently repaired with archival tape. Some loss to second leaf of bifoliate caused by breaking of seal. Unusually entertaining request in favour of his nephew, Lieut McCulloch of Bengal.
