Autograph Letters

For half year's rent of "his house in Benton Street" by Charles Greville.

Tennis player, one of the Four Musqueteers. One page, 4to, fold marks, very good condition. With original envelope (his initials and address printed on reverse. He is sorry not to have answered her last and thanks her for some books. "But I have been travelling a lot all over Europe and North Africa since the beginning of the month and am now leaving for South and North America.

Poet and journalist (1797-1864). Two pages, 4to, edges discoloured, fold marks, good condition. "Sir// I borrowed your shop Catalogue a few days ago and accidentally brought it away with me for which I beg you will accept my apologies. I send it by the first opportunity and I will thank you to send for me to the care of my Publishers Hurst Robinson & Co. Cheapside. I will remit the amount of the invoice whatever it [page 2] may be by an parcel[.] The young man to whom I the day I called at your shop will recollect the terms upon which he promised to supply me. . .

Muller published "Relation of the Operations and battles of the Austrian and French Armies, in the year 1809, with three plans by Muller (Printed for T. Goddard, Military Library, no. 1, by R. Wilks, 1810). A. (Dated) One page, 8vo, third person, spike-hole, trimiing, staining but text redable but for a few letters. "Dr Mullers Compliments to Mr Wilks, & sends him the proof sheet back.

See also her letter to Triphook (#2031). One page, 4to, spike-hole reaired, usual condition, text clear and complete: "The Dss of Rutland desires Mr. Wilkinson will be so good to send her a Print of herself, from Sir Joshua Reynolds's Picture the full length, & to bring it to her House No. 28 Sackville St. in the course of this [excision] day, as she is going out of Town,[.] when the Print comes the Dss desires the Person will make a Bill of it & wait for the money -"

(Tenniel) artist and cartoonist (18201914). Green has been asked by Tenniel, to write on his behalf. He explains that Tenniel is now blind and infirm. He [passses on the opinion that the artists their correspondent has named "all stood out in thier respective spheres, and were among the cleverest black & white artists of the century in their particular styles".

One page, 8vo, with damaged address page with no loss of text, letter grubby but text clear and complete. Mathematician (1774-1841). "Gentlemen./ A week ago I sent you a remittance of £4. by the Barrack Coach, the receipt of which I requested you to announce to me by letter. As I heard nothing from you, I troubled you with a letter on the subject, on Friday last, to enquire after the arrival of the former packet, and to repeat the order I had then sent.

Miscellaneous writer and editor (1757-1832). One page, 8vo, spike-holes, ow good. "Mr. Taylor's compts to Mr. Buckner and begs he will copy for him the full title of the new novel Rob Roy, including the [na]mes of the publishers. - If Mr Buckner will send it in the course of the afternoon as early as he can, Mr. Taylor will be the more obliged.- Mr. Taylor has another article on Shakespeare and his times." Note: (DNB) lastly became in 1813 proprietor of the ‘Sun,’ a violent tory paper.

Bibliographer, Biblical scholar, polemic (1780-1862). One page, c.9 x 5", small portion torn without apparent loss of text which is clear and apparently complete. "Mr. Horne will be obliged to Mr. Bohte to procure for him the undermentioned articles, from the "Leipzig catalogue". viz./ H[K?]argii, M.A.T. Synopsis Historia Religionis et Ecclesia Christiana. Edit. 2. 8vo- (catalogue pr. 8/-/ Munter (Fr.) Symbolae ad interpretationem Novi Testamenti, ex Marmoribus et Numis veteribus, maxime graecis. 4to (Catalogue p.259)".

(1778-1857). Two pages, 8vo, slight tears on fold marks, sl. discoloration, mainly good and clear.

Two pages, 4to, tears, chipping, text legible and complete. "My Dear Sir,/ Not being acquained with any Bookseller in Manchester I wrote to a relation of mine to get the Dissenters' Magazine advertised in the Manchester Gazette & to request [excision] Mr. Prentice to take a few Copies of the Ist. No. on sale but [sic] a few days ago I recd a Letter from Mr. Ellerby informing me that the Advertisement would appear in the Manchester Times & that the Magazine would be sold at his shop in Piccadilly[.] Now I have no [inserted] personal disrespect for Mr.

See de Ricci, Quaritch, for Earl of Jersey, Francis Child, Osterley Park. One page, 8vo, spike-hole, sl. grubby, text readable and complete. "Lady Jersey wants to a person to come down & arrange the Library here - It w[oul]d be a work of 7 or 8 Days & requires an intelligent Person used to the <?> - If there is any ["Person" excised] one [inserted] whom you hear of or belonging to you whom you could recommend to do it be so good as to write to Lady Jersey <?> upon it -". S.M. Ellis, Ainswworth, i.159, quotes Ainsworth letter: " . . .?>

A. One page, 8vo, bifoliate, spike-hole, fold marks, minor damage, corner nearly detached, text clear and complete. "Dear Sir./ I beg you will do me the favour to let me know immediately on receipt of this, the exact quantity of tonnage it will be necessary to apply for in order to send 500 [underlined] Copies of the Register to Calcutta, 300do. to Madras, and 100 [underlined] to Bombay.

English historian (1838-1928). The first letter, 27 February 1891, with letterhead 8 Grosvenor Crescent, one page, 12mo. "Dear Flower, / I have a great deal of work tomorrow morning: but I will certainly come to the general meeting, and to the Standing Committee as soon as I can get there." Long vertical tear caused by removal from mount, traces of which adhere to blank verso. The second letter, 18 October 1898, with letterhead Wallington, Cambo, Northumberland. 3 pages, 12mo.

One page, 4to, some discoloration and damage, but text clear and complete. "We fully expected you the night before last but your note of yesterday morning left not a doubt in our minds but that you would have been punctual to your appointment, it is highly necessary that we should see you, therefore pray return some answer that may dissipate doubt and suspense, is very busy staining the wals of the room and has therefore desir'd me to communicate his ideas --" I cannot identify the writer of the letter of "Ireland who may be the witer John Ireland (d.1808, DNB) of "Hogarth Illustrated".

One page, c.6 x 4", trimmed or part of page, edges discoloured, spike-hole, but text clear, possibly incomplete. "Mr Jeffery willl please to pay for the following Books Viz./ Plutarch's Lives £1-2/ Grose's[?] Ethics --6[s]/ F[?]uller's Thinking 4[s]/ ,Sketches?> -2[s]/ Bi[e?]ntons[sic] Characters 3-6/ Browne's Morals 2.6//£2= =/ RichBorough [??= in Kent, perhaps Parsons there?]" Vertically written in a different hand, "Acct the Contents/ W[?]. "Yr parcel reached me not before this evening - Inclosed I send you a Draft for £19.11.6- To make this sum, I include the copy of (10/ to be restored, & deduct 1816["16" sl.

Three pages, 8vo, somewhat faint but good. "Mrs William Thornton presents her compliments to Mr Sunter & requests that he will be so good as to send her tomorrow 2. Dozn. of Letter sized Envelopes, with Quenns=Heads stampt upon them. Also 2. Dozen of a larger size of Letter Envelope without [underlined] Queens-heads.- Likewise a ver soft black-Lead pencil for making a very marked [page 2] outline in drawing, & a quire of Letter=paper of that very thin sort used for writing to France or India./ Mrs. W. Thornton would also be extremely obliged if Mr.

Artist and author (1770-1831).Three pages, 8vo, bifoliate, tears, fold marks but text legible and complete. "My Dear Sir/ You will have a hundred copies of my book delivered to you in boards on Friday morning.

One page, 4to, chipped, creased, small holefold marks, other damage but text minimally affected and readable as follows: "I have recieved[sic] Puttenham and Spencer safe and must request you to send me immediately "The secret history of the court of James Ist, 2 vols demi-octavo [underlined]," and two copies of Gilchrist's letter to Gifford" which I see advertised as just published. The former, and one copy of the latter are to be put <?> down to the account of Mr Mitford of Benhall [John Mitford, misc. writer, see DNB]. I hope to recieve[sic] them soon, direct as before.

Miscellaneous writer and traveller in Greece and the Far East (1758?-1841), DNB. Two autograph letters signed, edges discoloured, texts clear and complete. (7 March) "Sir/ I yesterday received your new Catalogue in which I find two articles which I am desirous of having No 2634. Belon (Pierre) & 3440 Ranwolfs Travels. provided they are in pefectly good condition [underlined from "as"] [.] I possess a copy of the same edition of Belon, but it [superscript] being very much stained I should be glad to get another that is perfectly well preserved.

One page, 4to, edges discoloured and chipped with marginal loss of text. "With a friend of mine Lieut Bodenhoff of the royal danish Navy who goes to London to visit his family, I have got an opportunity to write you a few words.- My long silence is principally occat[s]ioned by the expensive postage, having no particular news to tel you, nor any orders to give you in the litterary[sic] way. Being persuaded you allways willl receive my letters with friendship[ I am happy enough to tell you that I myself and all my family is still in good health.

French Bookseller prob. One page and, verso, address and bookseller's note, 4to, In French, small portion lost on opening seal, edges discoloured, all grubby, text moreorless clear. Two pages, 4to, corner torn off with seal (must have been delivered by hand), text clear. Do errors and changes indicate a draft? - but sealed? "Sr. / I am but just now returned from a long tour in the North of England Scotland &c which has prevented me seeing & replying to your very kind communication of the late Mr Rivetts Letters [two words underlined] from Athens &c.

Miscellaneous writer (1781-1859). See also ,ention of Mitford in #2026, Whittington. (2 Feb. 1818, one page, 8vo, chipped, edges discoloured, spike-hole, text clear as follows: "I wish you would send me down by Coach, as soon as you can, 'Davison on the Poor Laws", and the 'Revolt of Islam' the new Poem by Percy B. Shelley. I dare say you will hear of the first at Mr Murray's." (no date, pm 1827) one page, 4to, small piece torn out, spike-hole, discoloration, text clear as follows: "You a note for 10£. due at 4. Months. The rest of the acct.?>?>

Officer of Archaeologia Cambrensis. Two pages, 8vo, Carnarvon, 18 Dec. <[18]58?>, text clear and complete, if illegible at times. "I am desirous of procuring the following Books [prob. separate sheet - lost]: - and of negociating with you for them: on the footing that I should have credit for them, you charging me your usual commission, or interest, upon this account over and above what you would charge for cash. / could procure them for me at your leisure <??> you might find pretty satisfactory opportunities: - [page 2] but the sooner I could get them I should say the better.

Scottish naturalist (1797-1855).One page, 8vo, sl. discolorationm good condition. "My Dear Sir,/ As the printing of my book now draws near to a close, I write to have proofs of the Plates you have in hand at your early convenience, that we may have the copies worked off." Poss. "By the copy of Griffith sent by Mr. Bohte, Dr. Williams finds he has only the 1st. part, comprising the - All the other parts of the 2d. vol. are wanting - But Dr. W. thinks it best to send the whole back, as he wants a portion only, & is fearful he might distress Mr. Bohte, by breaking his set -- The Bibl. is received - & Dr. Williams will send it round as Mr. Bohte desires- He will mark for himself any articles he may find suitable - But the Nat.
