3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Aged with with some damp staining. Geikie is glad to receive Cadell's letter, and will be 'delighted to have you on the long excursion if it takes place [last four words underlined]'. The excursion is however in doubt, as 'only five members of the Class have sent in their names and one with some doubt'. There are 'many calls' on his time, and unless more names come in the excursion will be cancelled. The letter concludes: 'I am disappointed with the want of enthusiasm of this year's Class.

On one side of a small rectangle of laid paper, with one corner snipped off. In fair condition, aged and worn, with spike hole not affecting text. Reads: 'Mr Lawless | Deliver Mr Nichols Ninety Popes omer 4 Vol. | S. Cadell'. Although clearly a member of the firm, the identity of the writer is unclear, the descriptions of Cadell & Davies material at the Huntingdon and Yale not yielding any information.

1p., small 4to. In fair condition, on aged paper, with spike hole (not affecting text). Listing seventeen newspapers, from 'The Times' to 'Drakard's paper', with note running up the right-hand margin: 'The Papers Mr Owens Pamphlet is to go'. Addressed on reverse to 'Robert Owen, Esqr.' From the archives of Cadell & Davies, publishers in 1813 of Owen's 'New View of Society'.

On 9.5 x 19cm piece of paper. With twopenny embossed official stamp 'For Receipts'. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of mount on blank reverse. Reads: '24 July 1802 | Recd. of Messrs. Cadell & Davies the sum of Twenty pounds Nine Shillgs. & 6. as pr. bill delivered for engraving two Plates St. Geo: de Mina & a Naval Medal. | Thos: Medland | £20 . 9 . 6'. Itemised at foot in another hand: 'View of St. Geo: de Mina - 18 . 18 . 0 | A naval Medal 1 . 11 . 6 | [total] 20 . 9 . 6'.

1p., 4to. On aged paper, with damage and discoloration to one margin. Eliza Urquhart begins her letter: 'Gentlemen, | Mr Urquhart has desired me to acquaint you that he thinks it would be adviseable immediately to see Mr Spotswood [i.e. Spottiswoode, then an employee of the book's printer Andrew Strahan] on the subject of accelerating the printing of his work, as from the present tardiness with which the proofs are sent, he thinks the Season will inevitably be lost'.

1p., 12mo. Addressed on reverse to 'Messrs: Cadell & Davies | Booksellers, | Strand, | London.', with faint Hadleigh postmark. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Trimmed and repaired, with traces of previous mounting. He writes: 'Gentlemen, | I will thank you to pack up separately two copies of my Literary Hours [published in 1798] & to direct one P. L. Courtier Esqr. [the poet Peter Lionel Courtier (1776-1847)] & the other Mr. Jones. These copies, which you will place to my account, will be sent for by Mr. Sharpe of Piccadilly.

1p., 4to. Spike hole. In good condition, on aged dusty paper. The letter reads: 'Dear Sir, I must request, as a particular favour, that you will advertise both the "Reply" and the "Letter on the Charges &c" in all the Morning and Evening papers both on Friday, and on Monday next. | I am | Dear Sir, | Very faithfully yours | L: D: Campbell'.

2pp., 12mo. Stabbed as issued. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with wear to two edges. The first page reads: 'This day is published, price 12s. 6d. in extra boards, | The First Volume of the Athenaeum, A Magazine of Literary and Miscellaneous Information. (Published Monthly) containing, [there follows a list of eighteen topics, in two columns] | Conducted by J. Aikin, M.D. | London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster-row; and Cadell and Davies, Strand.' In bottom right-hand corner of page: '(Turn over)'.

2pp., 8vo. 39 lines of text. On aged and lightly-stained paper, with one chipped edge. Unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed 'Gentlemen', the letter begins 'Pardon me for recommending to your notice a MS volume intitled "An Introduction to the literary history of the fourteenth & fifteenth centuries", which will this day be forwarded to you by the Deal & Canterbury Coach. In taking such a liberty I have no excuse to offer but wha is supplied by your high reputation & extensive concern in every department of literature'.

Trollope's letter: 3pp., 12mo. 48 lines. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper. Addressed, with postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Messrs. Cadell & Co. | Booksellers | Strand.' Trollope begins by announcing that he has 'a work nearly ready for the Press, wh. may probably be worth your attention [...] It is designed as companion to Mr Horne's work on the Scriptures, of wh. as you are the publishers, you may perhaps have no objection to engage in another, wh.

1p., 8vo. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed on reverse: 'Rev: Mr. Rowe | Feby. 1798'. Signed 'Henry Rowe' and addressed 'Gentlemen' (from the context clearly his publishers). The letter concerns Rowe's 'Poem's (London: Cadell & Davies, 1792), published, according to the British Critic, 'with the hope of alleviating the distresses of the author and his family'. The letter begins: 'The proposal you made of delivering me Fifteen Copies for Five Pound, will in no respect answer my purpose'.

12mo, 1 p. Ten lines, written lengthwise. Text clear and complete. Addressed on reverse to 'Mr. Cadell, Bookseller, Stran[d]'. Clearly relating to Hallifax's 'Sermon preached before the Lords spiritual and temporal', published by Cadell in 1782. He is sending a 'List of Presents to persons out of London'. Copies for 'the Mansf[iel]d Waggon' are 'to be sent on Sunday evening to Smithfield; the twenty-one copies for 'Dr Jowett of Cambridge need not be wrapped up in separate papers'.

On a piece of paper 7.5 x 18 cm. Neatly mounted (windowpane mount) on leaf of paper 27 x 23 cm. Neatly written out by Dallas, and reading 'Received Decr. 23d. 1800 the sum of Ten Pounds on account from Messrs Cadell and Davies. | [signed] R C Dallas. - | £10.-.-' On the right a blind-stamped government two pence stamp, 'FOR RECEIPTS'. Dallas published several works with Cadell & Davies, and the receipt may possibly relate to his 'Annals of the French Revolution' (1800), or his 'Natural History of Volcanoes' (1801).

8vo, 2 pp. Bifolium. Thirty-four lines of text. Clear and complete. Good, on aged and lightly-stained paper. An informative letter, casting light on the relation between publisher and author in Georgian England. Gisborne's aim is to give 'information respecting some employment which, if it please God, I shall have for one of your Presses'. He has in mind 'a little Volume [...] in large 8vo. like my works in general [...] such a book as Mr. Coopers letters [...] Its Title is, "The testimony of natural Theology to Christianity'.

A. One page, 8vo, bifoliate, spike-hole, fold marks, minor damage, corner nearly detached, text clear and complete. "Dear Sir./ I beg you will do me the favour to let me know immediately on receipt of this, the exact quantity of tonnage it will be necessary to apply for in order to send 500 [underlined] Copies of the Register to Calcutta, 300do. to Madras, and 100 [underlined] to Bombay.
