He begins by stating that he was 'an interested listener of your lecture against Theosophy yesterday afternoon, and as you were kind enough to invite questions I venture to make one or two criticisms which occurred to me'. The main purpose of the recipient's lecture, it seems to Boyd, is 'to demonstrate that Theosophy is incompatible with Christianity'. He proceeds opposes this strenuously, with reference to reincarnation and Kant.

These three log books, covering a period of nearly eighty years, constitute an attractive piece of social history, charting the growth of a rural school from precarious beginnings to a secure state on the eve of the Second World War, and providing a vivid example of the change in the British educational system from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.

Having married Ioma Gladys Heaton-Nicholls the previous year, Evans-Pritchard had been commissioned in the Sudan defence force in 1940. (He would return to the Sudan-Ethiopian border to fight against the Italians alongside irregular troops of the Anuak.) In this letter Evans-Pritchard's mother writes to J. H. Driberg, at the time Lecturer in Anthropology at Cambridge University: 'Teddy & his wife were to leave England about the 3rd. for the East. I understood the sea voyage would be only about 4 or 5 days.

Landscape photograph, 19.5 x 14.5 cm, laid down on a piece of thin card cut from an album, 18 x 21 cm. Around sixty boys are posed in four rows in front of a grand house, with two masters to the right and two to the left, and with a fifth in the centre of the group. The group are surprisingly fat-faced, posing sulkily in jackets, with some waistcoats and tam o'shanters. Five more boys look out of a downstairs window, three from an upstairs window, and one peeks out from behind the front door.

4to, 1 p. With mourning border. Lightly creased, but in good condition overal. A letter of condolence on her husband's death. 'I know that words are useless, but please let me say how much my sympathy goes to you in your great loss. It is, in its measure, a loss to all of us - even a great loss.'
