Book Trade History

Novelist and dramatist. One page, 8vo, good condition. "I was away yesterday - unwell, & today your Bombshell frightens me. Do spare me if possible [all from "Do" underlined] (& certainly if J.M. v. [John Murray V] is there, for he's the one to speak . ..); but Ican't refuse your request if you really want me. There is nothing new to say on the subject of Scott & Q.R."

Author son of Frederick Locker-Lampson (Rowfant). One page, 8vo, good condition. He is grateful for his kind letter about his book {"The Country Gentleman" was published in 1932]."

Novelist and historian (see DNB). One page, 8vo, minor defects, brief annotation by another hand ("author of Tremaine"). He is discussing his progress with "An historical essay on the real character and amount of precedent of the revolution of 1688 / in which the opinions of Mackintosh, Price, Hallam, Mr. Fox, Lord John Russell, Blackstone, Burke, and Locke, the trial of Lord Russell, and the merits of Sidney, are critically considered" (Lodnon, 1838). He says "I avail myself of Mr.

Author and journalist (see DNB). Three pages, 8vo, some damage not affecting text. He acknowledges receipt of some proofs and asking him to hold on to the ones he has "until I can make sure of a publisher". He finds the times "bad" and the work would not necessarily be published immediately. They should wait to make their "mark". "I write this in order that you may not let the blocks which you have engaged to [?] for us interfere such pressing & I hope more immediately useful work."

Colnaghi was a member of the notable family of English printsellers. Hall (1800-89) was an author and editor. Paper dimensions roughly five inches by three inches. Good. From a collection of material relating to the Artists' General Benevolent Fund. Reads '<...> Paul Dominic Colnaghi Esq | | S. C. Hall. | '.

Partner in Fores & Co., publishers and print sellers, who published some of Cruikshank's work and presumably sold it. He therefore had a vested interest in dealing with the problem he outlines to Cruikshank.

One page, 4to, edges discoloured and chipped with marginal loss of text. "With a friend of mine Lieut Bodenhoff of the royal danish Navy who goes to London to visit his family, I have got an opportunity to write you a few words.- My long silence is principally occat[s]ioned by the expensive postage, having no particular news to tel you, nor any orders to give you in the litterary[sic] way. Being persuaded you allways willl receive my letters with friendship[ I am happy enough to tell you that I myself and all my family is still in good health.

Theological writer (1792-1866). Two pages, 4to, chipping and discoloration slightly affecting text, mainly good. "Sir/ I am obliged to you for affording me a sight of Bede. I should be glad however to know the price [small excision "t"] you intend to set it down at- because looking at your list No 66 the copy there is said to be neat [underlined] 3.13.6. which I suppose cannot be the one now sent as the binding is in a very indifferent state, & the leaf (pages) 33[3?]-334 - is torn almost in two.

One page, 4to, small portion torn off with small loss of text, dusted, text mainly clear. "Dr. Williams is obliged to return to Mr. Bohte the following articles contained in the last parcel-/ Acta Soc. vol.6th. - This work never taken by the Library / der Pflanzen/ American Med. Botany/ With Barrows Africa - 2 vols--/ The Leipzig Trans: still kept for consideration// Of the Index to Panzers <?> there ought to be a second volume -/ & Dr. W. desires Mr. Bohte to recollect that the 9th. & 10th. vols. of Nova Acta Physico-Medica [?] of the former parcel.

(1783-1858). Thomas Rodd and Son NOT in Brown or Maxted! One page, 4to, fold marks, text clear and complete. "Mr Rodd,/ I am surprized that the vols. of Humboldt have not been yet sent home, as they were to have been done as soon as possible, and desire that they may be returned to Berkeley square immediately bound or unbound, - the Atlas shd. be sent on receipt of this, it never being intended to have it bound -" Addresss page part of conjoint leaf as foloows: "eighteen/ Aylsham, December {eighteen from above] fifteen 1825/ [address]/ [frank]Orford".

One page (prob. from larger sheet divided since part of an address survives at bottom, 4to, poor condition but text clear and complete. "When Mr Parry returns the enclosed Proof (which he begs to have again soon) for press, he will be able to send copy enough to complete the next sheet. What he now transmits is all he has ready. / Saturday Evening - Febry 21st." Could this be the Arctic explorer?

One page, 4to, bifoliate, some damage, but text complete and legible. "Chalmers Esq. to Greenwood & Co./ Greenwoods Atlas. Subscription to first and second parts coloured -------£7-7-0//". Verso "George Grantham". Verso of bifoliate leaf (recto blank) brief address as above and a note "G Greenwood/ County Maps/ Dec. 1830/ £7.7.0".

Publisher (Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown and Green)(1770-1837). One page, 8vo, trimmed, fold marks, grubby, text clear and complete."Dear Mill/As the Editor of the Annual Biography is proposing a Memoir of Mr Perry for that work, I shall feel obliged by any information with which you can favor him." Perhaps Perry, James,1756-182, Literature and Writing, Journalist (one of DNB's sources is the Ann. Biog.

Which, if any? Thornton, Richard 1776-1865, merchant, underwriter, and financier; Thornton, Robert John 1768?-1837, botanical and medical writer. Or East Indian Robert? One page, 8vo, grubbly but text readable: "I beg to decline subscribing to the work mentd to me".

One page, 4to, chipped, creased, small holefold marks, other damage but text minimally affected and readable as follows: "I have recieved[sic] Puttenham and Spencer safe and must request you to send me immediately "The secret history of the court of James Ist, 2 vols demi-octavo [underlined]," and two copies of Gilchrist's letter to Gifford" which I see advertised as just published. The former, and one copy of the latter are to be put <?> down to the account of Mr Mitford of Benhall [John Mitford, misc. writer, see DNB]. I hope to recieve[sic] them soon, direct as before.

One page, 8vo, some staining but text clear and complete. "Lady Northampton desires Mr Jeffery will call at Mrs Norman's No 11 Charlotte St Bedford Square for the books he sent to her yesterday, as they are not those she wished for , at present she does not wish any other books sent to her".

Muller published "Relation of the Operations and battles of the Austrian and French Armies, in the year 1809, with three plans by Muller (Printed for T. Goddard, Military Library, no. 1, by R. Wilks, 1810). A. (Dated) One page, 8vo, third person, spike-hole, trimiing, staining but text redable but for a few letters. "Dr Mullers Compliments to Mr Wilks, & sends him the proof sheet back.

Miscellaneous writer (1781-1859). See also ,ention of Mitford in #2026, Whittington. (2 Feb. 1818, one page, 8vo, chipped, edges discoloured, spike-hole, text clear as follows: "I wish you would send me down by Coach, as soon as you can, 'Davison on the Poor Laws", and the 'Revolt of Islam' the new Poem by Percy B. Shelley. I dare say you will hear of the first at Mr Murray's." (no date, pm 1827) one page, 4to, small piece torn out, spike-hole, discoloration, text clear as follows: "You a note for 10£. due at 4. Months. The rest of the acct.?>?>

Printer to a publisher. One page, 8vo, some marks, mainly good. "Sir/ You must be quite aware that it is not usual for a Printer to be sent about to seek Payment out of the proceeds of a work./ I must again request that you [underlined] will arrange the settlement, which has already been deferred far beyond the time." There is an Arthur Taylor in Brown (i.e -see also Todd - good info.

Book-Collector (DNB)(1767-1852). One page, 8vo, grubby but text readable. "The D of Hamilton will be much obliged to Mr. Clark [sic for "Clarke"] if he will either send by the bearer or procure & send to him at Thomas's Hotel a school book for the Marquess - that he cannot find abroad -/ Petters [Potter's?] Graecian Antiquities[underlined] - ..."

One page, 4to, minor defects, text clear and complete. "Lady Perceval's Compts. to <. de La Rue, & requests he will send the following Books, or, if he has them not in the Library that he will be so good as to write for them to Paris./ Gradus ad Parnassum - bonne Edition francoise-/ Les opuscules Latins[sic] de M. Le Bean/ 2 Vols./ Praed[i]um Rusticum de Vaniere [Jacobi Vanierii Praedium rusticum.. Jakob Vaniers Gedichte von der Landwirthschaft.

One page, 8vo, good condition, text clear and complete. "Dr. Arnold desires his name may be set down as Subscriber to the history of Shrewsbury by Rev. H Owen & Rev. JB Blakeney . . ./ Large paper". Not in Bent. Not in Besterman. Published 1825, 2 vols. (i.e. much later).

Scottish naturalist (1797-1855).One page, 8vo, sl. discolorationm good condition. "My Dear Sir,/ As the printing of my book now draws near to a close, I write to have proofs of the Plates you have in hand at your early convenience, that we may have the copies worked off." Poss. An Introduction to Conchology; or elements of the natural history of molluscous animals. JOHNSTON. George. M.D., of Berwick London, 1850. 8o.

One page, 4to, small piece chipped off, spike-hole, edges discoloured, text complete and clear. "I will thank you to send me a List of the Books you have purchased for me and also a List of late publications.

Two pages, 4to, tears, chipping, text legible and complete. "My Dear Sir,/ Not being acquained with any Bookseller in Manchester I wrote to a relation of mine to get the Dissenters' Magazine advertised in the Manchester Gazette & to request [excision] Mr. Prentice to take a few Copies of the Ist. No. on sale but [sic] a few days ago I recd a Letter from Mr. Ellerby informing me that the Advertisement would appear in the Manchester Times & that the Magazine would be sold at his shop in Piccadilly[.] Now I have no [inserted] personal disrespect for Mr.

One page, 7.5 x 6.5" (cut back from 4to), edges discoloured, tear and small mising portion (seal torn off) not affecting clear and complete text. "Lady Perceval troubles Mr Clarke with the Inclosed to forward to <??> Sykes & Co.[not in Maxted or Brown - not a bookseller?] & Mr <?> requests the Abbe 'de <?>' Medaillons & Books may be in Mr Cs' keeping till he hears further ---"

Poet and journalist (1797-1864). Two pages, 4to, edges discoloured, fold marks, good condition. "Sir// I borrowed your shop Catalogue a few days ago and accidentally brought it away with me for which I beg you will accept my apologies. I send it by the first opportunity and I will thank you to send for me to the care of my Publishers Hurst Robinson & Co. Cheapside. I will remit the amount of the invoice whatever it [page 2] may be by an parcel[.] The young man to whom I the day I called at your shop will recollect the terms upon which he promised to supply me. . .

Three pages plus address page, 8vo, some damage and small holes marginally affecting text (including loss of part of name of writer). "Your son addressed me in very unbecoming language this evening respectiie my Debt to you on which subject I can declare most solemnly my entire beleif [sic] up to the present moment that Mr Ranken my Solicitor had paid you in February last[.] I am particularly sorry to find it is not the case & I have not seen him since that time. He will obtain some money for me the end of next month and I hope will give you the amount of your Debt the first.

Barrister and book collector (Boas entry for his son). A. (1824), One page, 4to, grubby, chipped, text complete and readable. "Sir,/ I return you some of the books sent me, & regret exceedgy [sic] that I have not rece[ive]d some of those specified in my list particularly Nos. 2408 & 3982 deducting the book now sent to £2.8. I think my account will be £3.14.
