4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear. In a markedly difficult hand, Borrow explaining that he cannot write without discomfort. Apparently relating to a disagreement Snow has had with his landlord, who, according to Borrow, should have 'shewn some little compassion | It would do him good to give him this opinion from one who knows your honourable & upright demands and your hard struggle to live by your Brains - the hardest of all struggles'.

On 3 x 5 cm piece of paper. Cut from letter and with some text on reverse. In good condition, lightly aged. Reads 'Very faithfully | Jos D Hooker'.

On 1 x 7.5 cm strip of paper cut from letter. In good condition, lightly aged. Close cropped and with some text on reverse.

One page, 12mo, small closed tear on fold, ow good. "Monsieur Alfred Grandidier présente ses compliments au Secrétaire de Savage Club et accepte avec plaisir l'invitation qui lui a été faite pour demain samedi à 9h1.2 [9.30]."

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Forbes' , and while there is a possibility that it is addressed to David Forbes, the reference to the recipient being 'still in existence' suggests James David Forbes, who had been in bad health since his return from Norway in 1851. It begins: 'Only a few days before receiving your note we had been talking of you and wondering if you really were still in existence, for we had heard nothing of you in any way for so long.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of mount to blank second leaf of bifolium. Good, firm signature, with flourish. The letter reads 'Dear Sir | I have recd your favour of April last & am glad so easily to oblige you. - | Truly yours | I. I. Hayes'. Gourtie contributed stock exchange reports to the New-York American.

Both items in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, each with slight trace of paper label at spine. Letter One: 3 pp, 12mo. Docketed at head of first page '1 Dec/88.' and 'The Explorer of Thibet [sic]'. He thanks him 'for the Card of the St Botolph Club' and will try to go there the following day. He has 'so many things to do' that he is not sure he will be able to stay there long. Letter Two: 4 pp, 12mo. Docketed beneath address '6 January 89.', and beneath signature 'The traveller in Thibet [sic]'. Thanking him for the 'note and cheque', and hoping that the sketch arrived safely.

Four pages, 12mo, good condition.He thanks him for his letter and some enclosures which he lists (Baker's [African explorer] letter, [Smithers'] reply, Lady B.'s letter), continuing, "Your letter to Baker enters fully into the subject, and makes the state of affairs quite clear, and we can now only await the return of Lady Burton and Dr Baker to England. I hope that you will go on with Catullus [trans. Richard Burton] and your proposals about bringing out two editions of that work appear to be good and commendable ...

One page, 12mo, embossed stamp slightly damaged, some staining but text clear and complete. "I perceive by your card that you were present & I much regret I did not know you. However I find you had some communication with Dr. Hodgkin & I am delighted to hear that we shall have you as a Member. I now return the charts & beg to return my sincere thanks for their use." This letter is from a colelction of letters addressed to James Wyld, cartographer. The Ethnological Society evolved from the Aborigines Protection Society and later evolved into the Royal Antropological Insitute.

"I beg you to let me know by return of Post [phrase underlined] whther you desire to join the Aetna - I heard from Captn. Beaufort this morning that you do - but you have acted with so much indecision that I scarcely know whether to apply or not until more fully assured - For your Mothers sake alone I am perfctly willing to wait an answer - and if you are prepared to join - send me - / Your name at length / Date of original Entry in the Service / Name of last Ship / Rating on her.

Explorer (1856-1933), and commander of Prisoner of War Camp during the Great War. Three pages (with the third, including the signature, written crosswise), 12mo. In very good condition. He has been away and apologises for not replying to her 'kind invitation' sooner. He is disappointed not to be able to accept, as he should have liked to have had 'a chat with you & your husband'. Signed 'Henry de Windt'.

H. W. Seton-Karr's signature on a piece of card, roughly 9 x 11 cm, neatly cut with rounded edges. Reads 'Heywood Walter | Seton-Karr | June 2nd. 1927'. Neatly laid down beneath this is a thin printed strip reading 'Capt. H. W. SETON-KARR, F.R.G.S. (Explorer and Big Game Hunter), on "Investigations."' Sir Henry Seton-Karr's signature ('H. Seton-Karr.') on slip of paper, roughly 2 x 9.5 cm, laid down at head of card, on which is written, above H. W. Seton-Karr's signature, '(Sir Henry Seton-Karr MP)'. In good condition, on lightly aged paper.

American physician and explorer of Africa (1866-1939). The recipient (1830-1914) was Keeper of the Zoological Department at the British Museum, 1875-95, and Vice-President of the Royal Society, 1875-6. Two pages, 12mo. Very good, on slightly discoloured paper with a little light spotting. Traces of previous mount adhering to one edge. He is sending some 'spirit-specimens' from his collection and has written to Sir William Flower 'as to the disposition of the entire collection'.

American physician and explorer of Africa (1866-1939). The recipient was Assistant Secretary at the Natural History Museum, London. One page, 12mo. Good, on slightly discoloured paper, and with remains of stub still neatly attached to one edge. A significant letter, sent on the eve of Donaldson Smith's most notable expedition. 'Just a line in haste to tell you I & Dodson [a taxidermist engaged for the expedition] are ready to start for Rudolph Gillitt [another taxidermist] having left for England after hearing of his father's death.

See DNB for both van Straubenzee and E.A. Inglefield (the latter Admiral and explorer (1820-94). One page, folio. Van Straubenzee feels it is important to visit Gozo "during this month on duty", and asks if Inglefield will be good enough to "grant [him] a steamer" on a named day, Inglefield's note is vertical in the margin, saying "Submitted for the information of the Commander in Chief, observing that the "Escort" has been lent for this service. / Dockyard, 3 Nov. 1875 ./ EA Inglefield AdmlSupt".
