HART

This piece does not appear to have been published, and the only copy traced is in the Liddell Hart Papers at King's College London, with the original manuscript and an accompanying list of eighteen recipients including Lloyd George, H. G. Wells, and John Gordon of the Sunday Express, from whose papers the present two copies derive.

15 + 1pp., 12mo. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with shelfmark and red label of the Education Department, Reference Library. Four-page introduction by Gell followed by nine pages of 'Statements of Account for year ending June 30, 1888'. Included are four pages of accounts of the Endowment Fund, Foundation Fund, Literary Building Fund and Maintenance Fund at Toynbee Hall, and a page on the Spencer Ball and King-Harman Memorial Fund.

The subtitle reads in full: 'Description in detail of the boundary between the British Protectorate of Sierra Leone and the Protectorate of the Republic of Liberia as it runs from the river Makona (K) or Moa (M) in the north to the river Magowi in the south: together with the list of the cairns erected and other marks to identify the same. ' 15pp., foolscap 8vo. Stapled. In fair condition, on aged paper, with staining from staples. Small grey rectangular stamp at foot of first page, completed in manuscript: 'West African | 95 | Fo 2'.

2pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Considering the fact that Mrs Harford states that she is staying at the home of Mrs Martin, and that Mr Martin died in 1832, it seems probable that the letter refers to the preparations for the coronation of Queen Victoria, which occurred on 28 June 1838. The letter reads: 'Mrs Harford understanding that people are admitted to see the Preparations in the Abbey & thinking it probable that Mr Gillen may have been employed in the decoration, will be very much obliged to Mr Wilson if he could procure her a Ticket to see them.

1p., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with damage to second leaf, which carries the address to 'Messrs Carey & Hart'. Reads 'Gentln | Will you oblige me by an account Sales on the one hundred copies of the Gazetteer of New York, delivered to you in October last. | Very respectfully &c | [signed] Thos F Gordon | 2 May 1837 | Mess. Carey & Hart.'

1p., 12mo. Fair, on aged paper. The letterhead features a steel engraving of the monolithic Central High School. Hart has received Davis' letter informing him that he has been 'elected an Honorary Member of the "Irving Literary Institute".' He asks Davis to 'communicate to the members of the Institute my thanks for the honor conferred, & say that I accept it with sincere pleasure.' Hart writes 'Mr. G. Harry Davis, | Secretary &c -', but the middle name is given as 'Henry' in printed texts.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Begins 'Selfishly I can't help feeling sad at the announcement of your retirement', which means that he will see 'even less' of him. He rejoices at Senhouse's 'liberation' and sends him 'all love and blessings - not unmixed with envy'.

12mo: 2 pp. 11 lines of text. The Bishop's note has reached him 'just as I am about to set out for Cambridge to spend the week there'. When he returns he will 'search for any papers we may have relative to Dr. Walker'. He will let him 'know the result of my enquiries'.
