HIGHLANDS

All three items bifoliums in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE: 13 July 1799. 2pp., 4to. Regarding his endeavours to sell 'the whole Estates of Lewis & Kintail & Lochalsh [...] either in Cumulo or Lots with a resolution to sell to the amount of the debt that is upon them'. He states that it has always been his 'wish & endeavour to satisfy any Creditor on the Seaforth Estate & the interest is paid with a punctuality not exceeded'. He complains of 'the singular hardship of the times'.

Totalling 14pp., 12mo, and 7pp., 16mo. On seven bifoliums. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. The Kinrara letter, the only one addressed to Sir Edward Kerrison, has as letterhead a vignette captioned 'BOULOGNE | Laitières Milkwomen'; the Stoke Park letter on cream paper, the others on grey paper, with Landseer's letterhead, with antler motif, printed in red. The seven letters in an envelope with contemporary inscription: 'Letters from Sir Edwin Landseer'.

Both items genuine typescripts, and not mimeographs. Both attached by brass studs in matching pink wraps, with titles on covers. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 'The Carmichaels of the Highlands. Argyll. 1200-1745.' 8pp, 4to. Sections on 'The Carmichaels of Mac Ilmichaels of Perthshire', 'Muthill Parish' and 'Argyll'. TWO: 'The Highland Carmichaels. Part II.' 6pp., 4to. Both volumes mainly consist of dated genealogical information, with the source often given (e.g. 'Reg.

Scottish geologist (1810-79). Sir Richard Owen (1804-92) was a naturalist. One page, 12mo. Very good, though grubby and creased in one corner. Traces of mount adhering to blank verso. 'I have much pleasure in at length having it in my power to send you a proof of your memoir. It has been far longer delayed than I expected. I send you the press proof as there are a good many connections and queries in the margin'. Signed 'James Nicol'. Note: Perhaps concerning "Memoir of William Clift, F.R.S." (1849).

Scottish aristocrat and soldier (1871-1942). One page, quarto. Very good. Docketed in ink. The delay in replying is 'due to my having been extremely busy changing houses.' '[I]t is not possible for me to accept your invitation to take the Chair at Professor Stebbing's lecture [...] as I explained to you I am afraid I am almost certain to have to be away from London on that day.' Signed 'Atholl'.

12mo: 1 p. Good, with four fold lines. Helps held the post of Clerk of the Privy Council from 1860 until his death. In large letters beneath the oval blue Privy Council crest reads 'Life of | Las Casas | 2 copies for | [signature] A Helps'. The handwriting is bold and the signature is underlined with a flourish.
