4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. She apologises for troubling her 'with a few very important questions referring to the Biarritz life. I mean the Butcher's shop at Bayonne you spoke to the Baron about. Where does the dear man live? Also how have you settled to keep the meat fresh?' She asks for instructions so that she may inform her cook, 'a German who speaks a few words of french & a sort of nigger English'.

On a piece of 12 x 19cm paper. Discoloured and chipped, and laid down on an 8vo leaf removed from an album, with cut-out printed family crest letterheads in various colours on reverse. At head of page, in another contemporary hand: 'H. R. H. Princess Sophie's handwriting'. The letter is written in a difficult hand, and begins: 'The Princess Sophie returns Mr Clarke the enclosed Letter, & she also sends the sum of £1 .. 8 .. 9 for the 4 yds & 1/2 of <?> <?> he was so obliging as to purchase for her.' The letter continues with a request, ending '[...] this is much the fashion'.

On one side of a piece of vellum (roughly 11 x 42 cm). In good condition, with light signs of age. In an attractive somewhat calligraphic hand. Scan on application.

In the first paragraph he explains that having received their letter, he sent 'Dr Clarkes Plates [...] to the Writing Engravers but have not as yet received them back'. He has sent the bearer of the present letter to find out when they will be done, and he has been told to tell them the answer he receives. The second paragraph reveals that the bearer of the letter is himself an engraver: 'I understand that he applied to you for the engraving of one of your Portrait Plates.

Having received the recipient's letter, he proposes 'that you should call tomorrow at One o Clock at Cambridge House instead of Friday on which day I shall not be in Town'. He encloses a note for Mrs Hughes, 'whose direction I do not know, but should she have already left Town you will have the goodness to destroy it for it only contains the proposal of her calling at Cambridge House to morrow'.

23pp., foolscap 8vo. On six bifoliums of laid paper with 1833 Britannia watermark of Gilling & Alllford. Good, on lightly aged and worn paper. Folded into the customary packet, and docketed on reverse of last leaf 'Copy Letter to the King from the Princess Olive'. The document was written shortly before Serres' death, and does not appear to have been published.

The title carries the royal crest, and reads in full: 'Anno Regni Gulielmi II. Regis Angliae, Scotiae, Franciae & Hiberniae, Septimo & Octavo. | At the Parliament begun at Westminster the Two and twentieth Day of November, Anno Dom. 1695.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Of great interest, as giving the informal position of the British Home Secretary on what was at the time the most important problem facing him. Granville would only last as Foreign Secretary for a week after writing this letter, as Russell's Liberal Government would fall on 27 February. Ironically, his elevation to the post of Foreign Secretary the previous Boxing Day had been due to Russell forcing Palmerston's resignation over his unauthorized recognition of Louis Napoléon's coup d'état. The letter is addressed to 'My dear Baron'.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Text complete, on aged paper with a number of closed tears repaired with archival tape. The second leaf of the bifolium, lacking a strip at the top, is docketed 'Dr. Morris of Parliament Street's Success in curing Persons afflicted with Complaints similar to that which His Majesty labours under'. Considering the political content at the end of the letter, the author is probably Charles Hamilton, at the time of writing known by his courtesy title of Lord Binning.

15pp., 4to. On four bifoliums, neatly attached white thread. Good, on lightly-aged paper. A fine long letter, marvellously spirited and gossippy, to either one of the Marchioness's two sisters Theophila ('Offy') or Elizabeth. A large part of the letter is concerned with 'an account of the Drawing Room & the Ball'.

Folio, 2 pp. On first leaf of bifolium, with the verso of the second leaf docketed, under the heading 'King's Warrant'. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Headed '(Copy)', and with 'George R' in a bold hand in the top left-hand corner. Although the signature is almost certainly not in the hand of the king, the document is docketed in pencil: 'Signature of his late beloved Majesty King George III on Copy of a Warrant retained by General Saml. Townsend'.

Crown 8vo, 7 pp (paginated 2699-2705). Unstitched and unopened sheet, folded twice to make four leaves. Text clear and complete. On aged paper. With red ink tax stamp: 'NEWSPAPER | ONE PENNY | LONDON GAZETTE'. A list of Crimean war officers and men awarded 'the Imperial Order of the Legion of Honour, [...] which His Majesty the Emperor of the French has been pleased to confer upon them'. From the archive of Lieutenant-Colonel George Lynedoch Carmichael (1831-1903) of the 95th (the Derbyshire) Regiment, who was made a Knight of Legion of Honour at this time.

If her page's salary is £200, 'another Warrant must be made out [...] Mr. Rowland will do well to inquire about it.' The Queen's entry in the Oxford DNB stresses that she was never 'able to manage her money'.

On a piece of paper 7.5 x 18 cm. Neatly mounted (windowpane mount) on leaf of paper 27 x 23 cm. Neatly written out by Dallas, and reading 'Received Decr. 23d. 1800 the sum of Ten Pounds on account from Messrs Cadell and Davies. | [signed] R C Dallas. - | £10.-.-' On the right a blind-stamped government two pence stamp, 'FOR RECEIPTS'. Dallas published several works with Cadell & Davies, and the receipt may possibly relate to his 'Annals of the French Revolution' (1800), or his 'Natural History of Volcanoes' (1801).

Small paper stamp on the reverse, which is docketed 'James Paterson Gent: | Lieutenant | In the Sixty Ninth Regiment of Foot commanded by Colonel Colvill.-' Text entirely legible on lightly discoloured vellum.
