He begins by stating that she 'has been collecting money for us at Chester, Stockport & in south-west Yorkshire', and that, although she has not mentioned the visit, he 'can have no doubt that she it is to whom you refer.

Begins: 'Mr Grinfield, with his kind respects to Lady Cholmley, begs permission to submit the accompanying "Memoir & Remains of Mr Neale" to her perusal, having received a few copies (of which this is the last) for private disposal; - the price being 8/6d.

Regarding Neale's 'Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland', which was published in parts, with a total of 732 plates) in two series totalling 11 vols between 1819 and 1829. Gardiner writes that he has been 'commanded by The Prince Leopold to ascertain the number of volumes in which it is proposed to compleat Mr.

Confounding John Preston Neale, author of the ' Views of the seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland' (1819-1823) with the poet Henry Neale (1798-1828) he writes: 'Having seen and admired yr. work on the Seats of the Nobility &c. I feel gratified that Lord Foresters House has fallen under your notice.

Letter: 1p., 12mo. On bifolium. On aged and worn paper with closed tears at foot and pinholes at head. Reads: 'Sir, | I return you the account of Burley with some Amendments which I think it requires, I dare say that when I have an opportunity of seeing your Work I shall wish to become a Subscriber.' The proof, with a few minor corrections in Winchilsea's hand, are 2pp., 8vo, printed on one side of a half sheet folded once to make a bifolium, with the first page on the recto of the first leaf, and the second page on the verso of second leaf. On aged and worn paper.

4to: 1 p. Thirteen lines of text. Text clear and entire on aged and creased paper. Remains of stub from previous mounting adhering to reverse, and short printed biography tipped in along margin. A formal letter in the third person. Galway is 'extremely [underlined] sorry that he shold have given Mr. Neale so much trouble respecting the eighth Part of Westminster Abbey', which the peer had assumed was missing, but 'finds upon farther examination that it is with the other numbers'.

all octavo, in worn nineteenth-century binding, with front hinge loose. New endpapers. All items good, on aged paper with occasional foxing. An invaluable collection, providing a snapshot of secondhand bookselling in provincial Victorian England within an extremely short timescale. Several of the booksellers are not represented in the British Library collection, and others are only represented by catalogues of a later date. Of note are the two catalogues published by Sotheran's Manchester arm, the existence of which is not mentioned in Andrew Block's 'Short History' (1933).
