2pp., on bifolium with leaf dimensions 36.5 x 28 cm. On thick wove paper. In good condition, lightly-aged. The attractive calligraphic testimonial is on the recto of the first leaf, and is laid out in a sort of modified Gothic script, with initial capitals in red and gold. It is headed in large script 'To Ralph Griffin, Esq., F.S.A., | Registrar of Designs and Trade Marks.', with the date at the foot.

Wallace, a well-known painter of landscapes and still life subjects in oil and water-colour, was born at Kendal in the Lake District and studied in Kensington at the Byam Shaw and Vicat Cole School of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1922, and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, and with the Lake Artists' Society. He was a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists. The present collection casts an interesting light on the efforts of a good English artist to be of use to the war effort. Ten items.

He is directed to 'make up and transmit to this Office an account Current of the receipt & application of the [...] Sum of £277,450, duly attested upon oath & accompanied by the necessary vouchers & authorities in support thereof'. The money is made up of 'various bills of Exchange drawn by you upon their Lordships on 4th. Novr: 1810 payable to M. T. Sempayo [Sampayo]'.

On one side of a piece of 14 x 9 cm paper, with embossed design to the scalloped edges. Hand-coloured in yellow, pink, red, purple, grey and plum. A smiling young girl, blonde-haird and rosy cheeks, in gentleman's hat, muffler, plum velvet jacket, purple shorts and red tights, stands on the pavement, looking smiling at the viewer as she posts a letter with a red wax seal into a box marked 'Post Office' and 'London 12'. The caption at the foot reads: 'A VALENTINE | FOR MY LITTLE FRIEND'.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with a short closed tear along a crease and slight loss to one corner. He regrets that 'it is not in my power to afford any Official Assistance, in promoting the use of your very Ingenious, & Valuable Invention; as the Business of this Department is exclusively confined to the Building, & <?>, belonging either to His Majesty, or the Public, such as Palaces, Public Offices &c.' He suggests a number of organisations to which Lawrence should apply., 'as the Departments most likely to encourage your useful Undertaking'.

The Patent Office - now the Intellectual Property Office - was established by the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852, which simplified the procedure for obtaining patents of invention and reduced costs. In 1883 another Act of Parliament brought into being the office of Comptroller General of Patents, with, according to the National Archives, 'a staff of patent examiners to carry out a limited form of examination; mainly to ensure that the specification described the invention properly, but without any investigation into novelty'.

Envelope intact, but very stained, 9 x 21cm, with both manuscript (mainly Palmerston's hand) and printed words. As follows, manuscript in square brackets: "On Her Britannick Majesty's Service | [Palmerston] | To [Louis Fraser Esq] Her Britannick Majesty's [Vice] Consul | at [Whydah] || Secretary of State's Office." Also docketed in a different hand (not Palmerston's) "Foreign Office Dec. 4 1850". Note: one could speculate that the contentrs related either to Fraser's appointment or the blockade on the [slave] port Palmertston had ordered from 4 April 1850.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly-aged. 'Sir F Palgrave' in another hand at the head. Reads: 'My dear Sir | I enclose a note for Hooker but not knowing your particular object it is rather vague | Yrs truly | F. Palgrave'.

6pp., folio. On two bifoliums. In good condition, on aged paper. All four leaves with a central vertical fold as guide for each page to be laid out in two columns, with the body of the text in one column and emendations in the neighbouring one. The document begins: 'My Dear Sir, | I had yesterday a conversation with Mr. - respecting the present condition of our E.

Original map in black ink, coloured in blue, grey, brown, cream, yellow, red. Titled: 'COOKHAM STATION | Scale, 40 Feet to an Inch | July 1867'. With stamp in red ink: 'TO BE RETURNED TO | ENGINEER'S PLAN OFFICE | G.W.R. PADDINGTON'. In ink on reverse: 'COOKHAM STATION'. Aged and worn.

The three volumes in folio, in their original printed blue wraps. First Report: viii + 364pp. With fold-out table. Second Report: viii + 276pp. Final Report: x + 157pp. All three aged and worn, with the final signature and back cover of the First Report detached, and the Final Report lacking its back cover, and with front cover detached and damage to last few leaves. Second Report with withdrawn label of Owen College, Manchester. The three volumes all 'With Minutes of Evidence and Appendices'. Containing an enormous quantity of information within the minutes and supporting material.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight damage to one corner. Wharton writes that 'Dodds, whom on my request you some time ago put on your list to be made a Gaurd [sic]', writes me word that he will be 30 years old on the 23d inst. and is told that he cannot be made a Gaurd after he has attained that age.' He asks to be informed 'how that stands, as I shrink at the idea of having him again on my hands'.

10 x 13 cm envelope. In fair condition, aged and worn, with damage and loss to back flap.. Asquith has written out the address as follows: 'Quintin Hogg Esq | 5 Cavendish Square | W'. The last two lines have been crossed out, and the address amended in another hand to '56 Westbourne St | West Brighton'. The front of the envelope has a square London postmark in black ink, and circular frank in red; the rear has two more postmarks (one London and the other Brighton. The flap has 'Home Office | Whitehall' printed on it.

Both items in good condition, on lightly worn and aged paper. ONE: Photograph. Roughly 12 x 9 cm, with upper corners rounded. Laid down on piece of 22 x 16.5 cm brown paper with printed caption 'INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CONGRESS, | LONDON, 1860'. The paper backing is in turn laid down on a piece of white 23.5 x 17 cm paper. The photograph depicts a keen-eyed and bewhiskered Legoyt, seated uncompromisingly on a chair, with arms folded.
