Gardiner writes that he has been 'commanded by The Prince Leopold to ascertain the number of volumes in which it is proposed to compleat Mr.

Montefiore, Chairman', dated 'Crawley, Oct. 1871', appealing for assistance for the 'Widow and unmarried Daughters of the late MARK LEMON - for thirty years Editor of "Punch"'', who are in 'straitened circumstances'. A list of 154 subscribers follows, each with the amount pledged, beginning with 'Joseph M. Montefiore, Esq.' (£35) and including 'Wilkie Collins, Esq.' (£5), 'Mrs.

Printed in purple ink on both sides of a 9 x 11.5 cm grey card with rounded edges. In very good condition. One side attractively printed, with fancy type, decorative border and floral vignette. The other more businesslike, headed 'W. J. Little, Stationery, Library, and Useful Present Depot, Next London and South Western Bank, High Street, Harlesden, N.W.' and carrying a list of prices for 'Special Value Writing Papers'. The printers' details are not given, but the item comes from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'.

The first three pages carry 32 numbered rules, on the topics: Titles; Design; Management; Membership; Subscriptions; Benefits; Repayments; Funds; Disputes; Alteration of Rules; General. The last page carries three tables (first two regarding 'Ministers' and last on 'Widows & Orphans'), headed 'Schedule of Subscriptions and Payments'. Scarce: no copy located on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The Times of 12 October 1875 carries a report of the passing of the resolution by 'Rev. Mr.

Under the heading on the first page is a nine-line list of publishers of Christie's book, followed by a two-page account, with reports of meetings on 24 June and 28 November 1840, signed in type 'By Order of the Committee, | J. G. COCHRANE, | Secretary and Librarian.' Pp.4-8 carry an alphabetical list of subscribers, in small type, under the heading 'THE FOLLOWING ARE THE NAMES ALREADY ENTERED:'. Beginning with 'W. Ainslie, Esq., Ripley, Surrey' and ending with 'Col. Young, Ealing', it includes 'T. Carlyle, Esq.', 'C.

Having been elevated to the Dukedom in the previous January, he writes to infom Newham that he was not aware that his father the 4th Duke 'was a Patron and Proprietor of the Nottingham Subscription Library. The share in the Library, being part of the personal Estate in Notts: does belong to me, and I shall be very glad to continue on the list of your Proprietors'. He will give directions for the annual subscription to continue to be paid.

Letter: 1 p, 4to. On the recto of the second leaf of what was originally a bifolium, but with the first leaf (around a quarter of which has been torn away) detached. On aged paper. Addressed, on recto of first leaf, to 'Mr. Edd: Jones, No 6. | Little Titchfield Street | Gt. Portland Street | London.' With two postmarks (both in black ink; one reading 'OXFORD') and a black wax seal. The reverse of the second leaf has the forwarding address 'Times Office | Printing House Square | Blackfriars', with 'Walthers' above it. Letter reads 'Dr.

The collection in a contemporary green leather quarter-binding, with grey paper boards and title in gilt on spine. Good, in heavily worn binding splitting at rear hinge. The letters are expertly mounted on leaves in the volume. 'Excerpta Cantiana': folio: 23 pp of letterpress, with illustrations and with three full-page engravings by J. S. Agar and one fold-out pedigree. PRESENTATION COPY from Streatfeild to the antiquary and historian Charles James Palmer of Great Yarmouth.

Quarto. 135 pages of skillfully executed autographs followed by a 45-page printed 'INDEX TO AUTOGRAPHS', ranging from 'H.R.H. The PRINCE of WALES, K.G.' to 'Zillwood, A., The Abbey, Romsey, Hants.'. Attractive title in gold, purple, blue, yellow and green, with illustration of Osborne House. A handsome, if somewhat flashy, production. Maroon morocco binding, with a large crest stamped in gilt within a decorative border on the front board. All edges gilt. Tight copy, rebacked with new endpapers. Offsetting to fly leaf and a little damp damage to corner of title.

Disbound. Octavo: four pages. Good: slightly aged and with some creasing to extremities. Thirty-one lines of text, followed by a double-column list of subscribers, and amounts subscribed.

On one side of a piece of wove paper roughly 10.5 x 17.5 cm. Good. Printed in top left-hand corner: 'To J. B. Nichols and Son. Printers and Booksellers. 25, Parliament Street, Westminster. ***Office, 10, King Street, Westminster.' Asks that the 'Subscription to Forby's Vocabulary 1 1 0' be paid to him or to 'Mr Wilkin, Bookseller, herewith'. Countsigned crosswise 'Received for S. Wilkin | [signed] Josiah Fletcher | Jan 25/30'. Docketed on reverse. BBTI has Wilkin as a bookseller in Norwich from before 1821 to 1830; and Fletcher as a binder and printer there from around 1820 to 1835.

12mo, 2 pp. Thirteen lines of text. Good. The letter possibly relates to Furnivall's Early English Text Society, founded in 1865. He is enclosing a Post Office Order for a guinea, but, as he 'said to Mr Furnivall last year', he does not consider himself a subscriber, 'wishing to reserve the right of withdrawal in case of finding it inconvenient to pay, which will certainly be the case when I give up my official position'. Nevertheless asks Wheatley to remind him 'when the time comes for collection'.

8vo: 1 p. A bifolium (leaf dimensions roughly 270 x 185 mm), on thin wove paper, with the printed page on the recto of the first leaf, the rest being blank. Very good, on lightly aged paper.
