REBELLION

These ten items were produced at the height of the surge of outrage with which the American left greeted the killing of four students by National Guardsmen at Kent State University, Ohio, on 4 May 1970. (As an example of the incident's wider cultural significance, see the song 'Ohio' by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.) Originating from New York, six of the items are dated from the end of the same month, and the other undated items date from the same period. All ten items are single leaves. Eight of them are 8vo, one is 21 x 18cm, and the other 35 x 21cm.

24pp., 4to, unbound, flimsy/thin paper, crudely stitched, fold marks, wear and tear, including closed tears at folds, grubby, loss of 2 x 3" corner of final leaf (jagged), text, apart from this loss and wear at the fold of last leaf, clear. Annotated, probably in Lambert Cowan's hand, with the name of the officer to whom it had presumably been sent, Maj.Gen. F. Campbell, and with three lines in the same hand, some of which is lost by the damage to the last leaf, but now reading, "[...] own by the great precautions taken by | [...] ment that they believed in the | [...] of the danger".

ONE: The copy writ is 2pp., 8vo. On a leaf of laid paper with crown watermark. Aged and worn, and separated into two halves along central vertical crease line. Headed 'George R', the document begins: 'Whereas the Land Owners and Inhabitants within ye: Counties of Cheshire & Lancashire have most hbly represented unto us That Cross ye: River Mercy wch runs between those Counties had been built three Stone Bridges vizt. Warrington Bridge Stockport Bridge and Crossford Bridge and a Wooden Bridge called Carington Bridge'.

2pp., folio. Disbound. Fold mark. Fair, on lightly-aged and creased paper. The title, lengthwise on the reverse, ends: '[...] Admiral King; and, Copy of Report as to how the Captured Vessels and Property were disposed of, and what Amount of Prize Money was shared by the respective Captors; &c. | (Colonel Sykes.)' At the head of the return is a communication from Briggs repeating the title, dated from the Admiralty, 10 May 1866.

4to, 6 pp. Unbound. Text clear and complete. On aged paper, with slight wear to extremities. The full drop-head title reads: 'H. M. 32nd Regiment. Return of Casualties of the above Corps from 30th June to 22nd November, 1857, being the day on which the Garrison of Lucknow was released by the Head Quarters Army under the immediate Command of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief. | Cawnpore, 29th January, 1858.' Signed in type at end: 'John Giddings, Paymaster, H.M's, 32nd Foot.' Comprising lists, in several columns, giving ranks and names of officers and men, dates and causes of death.

An important contemporary engraving, apparently unrecorded, with no record of the engraver S. Pearse, or of the Comus Press (probably connected with 'The Comus', a periodical launched in Bengal in 1857). On one side of a piece of wove paper, roughly 22.5 x 28 cm. On lightly-spotted and aged paper. Discreet repair to tear which had split the item in two. A crude but accurate representation of the well and environs, with the following text beneath: 'THE WELL AT CAWNPORE. S. Pearse.| Into which the bodies of the Women and Children were thrown after the Massacre.

Two pages, folio, minor defects including soiling, small holes and tears, but text complete and legible. Signatories at the top are: [Thomas] Parker, Henry Grey, Duke of Kent ("Kent C.P.S.), John Ker, Ist Duke of Roxburghe, James Craggs the Younger ("J Craggs"). "We do hereby direct, that out of such Moneys as are or shall come to your hands for the following Uses you lay unto William Burroughs Esqre late Commissary Generall of his Majesty's Stores, Provisions and fforage in North Britain the respective summs following Viz" Balance due ......
