In fair condition, aged and worn, with rusted staples and slight loss to wraps at foot of spine. Index at rear. The main body of the catalogue paginated 31-83, this being 'The Second Portion' of the sale of Broadley library.

18 + [1]pp., 8vo. In red cloth half-binding, with brown marbled boards. Stamp of the Royal Historical Society on endpaper, and pencil shelfmarks. In fair condition, aged and worn. A curious production. The intent of the author (certainly Stevens) is to facilitate 'definite and permanent organisation', by his 'preparation of an Index of all the documents of American concern in private or public Archives of Great Britain, Holland, France and Spain that accumulated between the years 1763 and 1783'.

Both parts in fair condition, with light signs of age; the second part with creased corner causing damage to the last couple of leaves and back cover. Two stapled pamphlets, uniform in grey printed wraps. PART I. 'Stone Age to 8th Century A.D. | Illustrated.' [4] + 13pp., 4to. Frontispiece and two full-page illustrations, with two more illustrations in text. Inscribed on front cover 'With the author's best wishes | Xmas 1921'. PART II. '10th to 14th Centuries A.D., etc. | Illustrated with Photographs by the Author.' 19pp., 4to (paginated to 32).

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. The first page carries the 'pitch', beginning: 'AN HISTORICAL MAGAZINE has long been the great desideratum of our literature.' The author proceeds to claim that 'THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE has stepped forward to occupy this vacant post.' The page ends: 'Five numbers of the new undertaking are before the public, and present a fair example of what the work will henceforth be. The following important subjects have been treated of in some of the recent articles: -'.

On 7 x 10.5 rectangle cut from the conclusion of a letter. In good condition, lightly aged, with traces of mount adhering to reverse at corners. Reads: '<...> appear amongst your <...> valuable collection. | I remain Dr Sir | Yours most truly | H. C. Selous | J. Watkins Esqre | Liverpool.'

1p., 12mo. With mourning border. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, loosely attached to part of leaf from autograph album. Reads: 'Dear Tom | Please bring me a couple of grains of corrosive sublimate for a new bit of gum I am preparing - | Yr. affect. brother | E. Armitage'. Edward Armitage's entry in the Oxford DNB states that while adhering to the ' technical methods' of his teacher Paul Delaroche, he 'experimented with techniques suitable to England's damp climate'.

2pp., 12mo. 36 lines. She begins by accepting an invitation to give a talk to Wiener's 'Society', about which she has 'hears so much'. She is 'honoured to add my name to such a distinguished roll of speakers'. She next explains why she believes radio to be 'infinitely superior to TV'. She next turns to 'Mr. Sieveking's adaptation', which she considers 'very clever, as he had to leave out the descriptions which formed such an important part of the book. He allowed me to see and criticise all his scripts, too. I'm so glad you are liking the result. Isn't the signature-tune pleasing?

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. She has received Hollingworth's note and is sending him 'a circular about the book I am editing of my late husbands "Letters Archaeological & Historical". She explains that there are two "Letters" about the "Christian Family" and I well remember the interesting correspondence on the subject.'

1p., 4to. 12 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He was not able to reply to Driberg's letter sooner because he was arranging with the secretary of the Cambridge Historical Society to deliver a paper to be entitled 'Theories of the Causes of Wars'. He wonders whether Driberg's 'anthropologists' might not be able to 'join in the meeting - or possibly I might to talk [sic] to them on the following day'. He does not think he will be able to find time the following term. Ginsberg's paper 'The Causes of War' was published in 1939 in the Sociological Review.

The first and third items good, on lightly-aged paper; the second letter brittle, on high-acidity paper, with slight loss to the corner of one leaf, affecting a few words, but not the sense, and a few repairs with archival tape. Letter One: 2pp., 12mo. 31 lines of text. Perry begins by asking when the 'class meeting' is 'to come off'. He then informs Greenough that 'Poor Vose has paid his last debt', and that he has received a reply to his letter of condolence from Mrs Vose. He complains that he has 'not heard a word from Little, Brown & Co. in respect to my book.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with thin strip from mount adhering to blank reverse. Addressed to 'W. G. Herdman Esqr. | Liverpool'. If his brother's picture ('Mr J. E. Lauder') and his own 'are not by this time sent off'', he would like this done immediately, 'as they must be in Edinh. by the 1st of Feby.'

2pp., 12mo. 29 lines. On dry high-acidity paper, with a little chipping to extremities and a couple of closed tears, but the only damage to text to the two initials of the name of the recipient 'W. W. Greenough Esqe.', caused by slight loss to the bottom outer corner of the second leaf. He is 'anxious to know' if the copy of 'Part VI. of our "Contributions"' was received by Greenough, and how those sent to 'several other directions' fared.

Both items good, on lightly-aged paper. Letter One: 2pp., 12mo. 31 lines of text. Perry begins by asking when the 'class meeting' is 'to come off'. He then informs Greenough that 'Poor Vose has paid his last debt', and that he has received a reply to his letter of condolence from Mrs Vose. He complains that he has 'not heard a word from Little, Brown & Co. in respect to my book. Those papers - the Advertiser & the Transcript are slow in bringing out their notices. My book evidently does not take well in Boston.' He reminds Greenough that he still owes $5 for his copy. 'I am not in haste.

8vo, 20 pp. In original grey printed wraps. Text clear and complete. A fair copy, on lightly-aged paper; wraps discoloured and chipped. Printed in small type, with 123 footnotes, and containing a mass of information. This separate printing is excessively scarce: no copy at the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at Sheffield.

4to, 1 p. Ten lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with some creasing at head. The delay in replying is due to 'a rather severe attack of influenza'. She has no photograph to send ('I have been meaning to have some new ones taken, but never seem to get time'), but is 'so glad that my books give you pleasure, & I hope that I shall be able to continue to entertain you with them'.

12mo, 16 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Not paginated. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Includes a three-quarter page 'Chart of the Anchorages in Encounter Bay by Wm. Light, Surveyor General'. Scarce: no copy in the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at Oxford (where dated to 1846).

Foolscap (32 x 20.5 cm), 2 pp. Bifolium. 51 lines of text, in neat copperplate, followed by a list, in the same hand, of sixteen signatories. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with slight creasing at head. Clark, after whom the town of Clarkabad is named, was described by a contemporary as 'perhaps the most famous missionary in the Panjab for length of service and energy of work'. The address describes instances in which Clark has shown himself to be 'a well-wisher, heart and soul of the Indian Christians'. The section begins 'On your recommendation the Revd. Mr. Daud Singh, Mr.

An important contemporary engraving, apparently unrecorded, with no record of the engraver S. Pearse, or of the Comus Press (probably connected with 'The Comus', a periodical launched in Bengal in 1857). On one side of a piece of wove paper, roughly 22.5 x 28 cm. On lightly-spotted and aged paper. Discreet repair to tear which had split the item in two. A crude but accurate representation of the well and environs, with the following text beneath: 'THE WELL AT CAWNPORE. S. Pearse.| Into which the bodies of the Women and Children were thrown after the Massacre.

12mo: 159 + [9] pp. (Publisher's catalogue of 'Books Printed for Nath. Crouch at the Bell against Grocers-Alley in the Poultrey near Cheapside.' begins at foot of p.159 and continues for nine unpaginated pages, ending 'FINIS.') Lacks frontispiece. Woodcuts on pp.26, 61 and 121. In worn original calf binding. No endpapers. Aged and with worn fore-edge. Separate title to second part on p.89 ('The Secret History of the Lady Jane Gray', 'London: Printed for Nath. Crouch. 1710.') Scarce: COPAC only lists reproductions, with the note: 'R.B.

12mo, 1 p. Four lines of text. Good, on aged paper with watermarked date '<...>864'. 'If the "Macaulays" have not gone yet, would you send them here, directed to me.' Trevelyan was nephew of the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, of whom he published a biography in 1880.

Printed on one side of a piece of thick wove paper, watermarked 'G REIG', roughly 53 x 41 cm. Worn and a little spotted and grubby, with creasing and wear to extremities, but good overall, with text and design clear and entire. Handsome boldly designed certificate. Not filled in and with no manuscript additions whatsover. The illustration, an oval roughly 12 x 17 cm, shows the ship approaching white cliffs on shore, with a boat containing seven natives in the foreground.

Octavo, 2 pp. 23 lines of text. Lightly discoloured and slightly creased. The letterhead gives the names of seven of the Anthology's staff, and features an illustration of a raven. Regarding a line missed (beginning 'O fool') in the printing of a poem of Zeman's, he is pleased that Zeman has been able to 'see the matter from my side', and doesn't think 'an explanatory note in our next issue would be adequate'. Zeman's poem is 'beautiful' and 'well worth reprinting'. 'As to the Soiree, in your honor, think no more about it.

Landscape 12mo, 2 pp. 17 pages of text. Blue oval stamp at head. Good, on lightly creased paper, with small closed tear at head. Difficult hand. 'Bambridge is not a familiar name in Virginia. Very many of the early settlers died from malaria & other fevers soon after arriving.' Discusses the difficulty of genealogical research ('we have a hundred Counties in Virginia').

Quarto: xii + 168 pp. In original grey printed wraps. Numerous facsimiles. Printed order slip loosely inserted. Good, with grubby prelims and creasing to last few leaves at rear. Including a twenty-four page description of an 'extensive collection of Washington letters and documents [covering] every phase of his eventful life'. Participants named in the title: 'Cotton Mather, George Washington, William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Generals of the American Revolution, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Robert Fulton'.

Printed Post Card, dimensions three and a half inches by five and a half. Good, on aged paper, but with the reverse (showing the remains of a photograph of Brighton) damaged by its removal from an autograph album. Unobtrusive vertical crease. Reads (apparently in Egerton Castle's hand) 'Dear Miss Gray | Your letter has been forwarded to us here. We have much pleasure in sending you the autographs you desire'.

4to: 1 p. Very good. 18 lines. Concerns a 'lecture by Dr. D. A. Allan' (Douglas Alexander Allan, writer of several works on museums and exhibitions). 'It is very regrettable that Dr. Allan made the statements which he did without confirmation. They were completely erroneous and on the day following he called here and expressed his regrets at the incident. He has now full particulars in skeleton form regarding the activities of this Museum'.

[Vatican Librarian; Archivist of the Vatican Secret Archive; subject of Shane Leslie's biography;Three pages, octavo. Good, on lightly aged and spotted paper, with crease to second leaf of bifolium. Regarding Rev. J. R. McKee's translation of Arnold Oskar Meyer's 'England and the Catholic Church under Queen Elizabeth'. He has received McKee's letter. 'When I promised this to the Professor more than two years ago I did not contemplate having to leave England altogether & still less had I any dream of the war, which has interrupted all relations with German friends'.

Author and positivist (1831-1923). 1 page, 16mo. In poor condition: grubby, creased and worn. Having returned to London 'after an absence of many months' he has found at the Athenaeum Club his correspondent's two letters. He is sorry for the delay: 'The Club has been closed for repairs & the letters were mislaid. It is quite out of my power to visit Bristol durinng the ensuing session.'
