Despite the fair amount of attention bestowed on the 'Anglo-Japanese Conversation' - the secret negotiations between the British government and the Japanese ambassador at the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War - it is only with the discovery of these two documents that it can be established that the two countries continued with informal negotiations until the fall of Nanking.

Printed card, c. 8 x 11cm, brown print, very good condition. Recto: small box in the middle of a newspaper page in Chinese, "J.G. Philp, | Down, Philp & Co., Proprietors, 18 Hunter Street, Sydney." Printed in black ink on one side of a piece of 55 x 44 cm wove paper. Dimensions of map 53 x 43 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with some foxing. Folds into a 21 x 10 cm packet. A detailed image, with key of eight features: Capital of a District; Town; Fort; Temple; Encampment; Post Station; Halt; Post Road; Public Road. The map was included in 'Travels of the Russian Mission through Mongolia to China, and Residence in Pekin, in the years l820-l821' by George Timkowski ('with corrections and notes by Julius von Klaproth').

16 ALsS, 2 TLsS, 1 ACS. Also included are a draft of Arthur's first letter to Harrison (see Item Twenty below), a photograph of Harrison and Mary S. Sims (Item Twenty-three), and two papers on workers' rights in China (Items Twenty-one and Twenty-two). The collection is in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Ten of the nineteen items are in their envelopes, addressed to Arthur at 59 Howard Rd, New Malden, Surrey, with three sent from on board ship (SS Aquitania, SS Mauretania and SS Berengaria). The letters total 43pp. (see each letter for format).

111pp., folio. Unpaginated, and printed on the rectos only. A duplicated and stapled production, in grey printed wraps. In poor condition: on brittle and aged high-acidity paper, with chipping to wraps and front cover loosening. Inscribed inside the front cover. No. 44 of 72 contributions is 'J. NEEDHAM - L. WANG - D. J. PRICE (INGHILTERRA) - Chinese astronomical clockwork.' Scarce: no copy on COPAC or in the Wellcome collection, and the only copy on OCLC WorldCat at the BNF.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper. Reads: 'Dear Sir, and His Honor, the Lord Mayor of London. | Your appeal has this hour met my eye. Be so good as to add the enclosed $100, to your collection for "the China Famine Relief Fund." Messrs. Brown, Shipley, & Co, are in the habit of cashing my check on Bank of New York; it it is desired.' With oval stamp of the City bankers Brown Shipley & Co., and initaled note of the converted sum, '£20 7s 3d'.

17 + [2]pp., foolscap 8vo. Stapled. Duplicated typescript on pink paper. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with punch hole at top margin. Divided into two main sections: 'Interrogations' (pp.1-11) and 'Taking statements from accused persons' (pp.12-17). Each of the two sections is subdivided, the first into 32 numbered paragraphs, and the second into 22. Headings include: Recording; "Comfort and Refreshment"; "Interrogation of Foreigners"; Charge Procedure; Persons who cannot read etc.

24pp., 12mo. In printed red card wraps. Title and badge of the Hong Kong Chinese Training Unit on cover, and 7pp. of advertisements (including 'San Miguel The Finest Beer in Hong Kong'; Watson's, 'The Leading Soft Drink Specialists in Hong Kong'; Tai Wo Leather Ware) on boards and pp.2 and 22-24. Part I of text (pp.3-16) is titled 'Tommy Atkins in Hong Kong'. The section begins: 'Many years ago it was said that Britain's finest ambassadors were her soldiers abroad. This still remains true, although unfortunately occasional incidents caused by misunderstanding have sometimes given it the lie.

3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He has been reading Wortham's biography ('Gordon: An Intimate Portrait', published in the same year) and asks whether he might be interested in 'a book which was published in 1885 by my mother's uncle, a Mr. Samuel Mossman. I believe he died about forty years ago, and lived in Liverpool.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. 76 lines of closely and neatly written text, including a four-line postscript cross-written on the first page. Addressed, with Chester postmark, on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Bill | Boar Lane | Leeds | Yorkshire'. ('Bill Thomas, 7, Boar lane' is listed among the 'Glass, China, and Earthenware Dealers' in Haigh's 'General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Leeds', Baines & Co., 1839). The reverse of the second leaf also carries the remains of the wax seal, stamped 'Ann'. In fair condition, on worn and aged paper.

8pp., 12mo. Stitched into grey card wraps. In good condition, on aged paper in worn binding. Ownership inscriptions on reverse of front cover of E. Shepheard Erpingham, dated 17 September 1830; and Elizabeth Ann Shepheard, dated 7 December 1848. The pamphlet contains 81 diagrams of shapes. This volume was issued during the first European Tangram craze. Scarce: no copies on COPAC and the only copy found on WorldCat at Harvard, whose entry states that it is without date or place, while assigning it to 'Paine & Simpson'.

Both items are in very good condition, with minor signs of age. The first sewn with green ribbon, and both with the customary stamps, seals and other appurtenances. Two interesting and unusual indentures, showing the spread of the nineteenth-century British Empire. ONE: On six sides of two 46 x 30.5 cm. skins, each folded once, and bound one in the other with ribbon. 61.5 x 47cm (map proper 48.5 x 43cm), faint fold marks, minimal foxing, good condition, with loose card backing, clingfilmed. The China Inland Mision was founded in 1865. This was presumably the first map prepared by them.

Both copies 16pp., 12mo, and both stapled in white wraps. Copy 1: Published by the Chinese People's Committee for World Peace and Against American Aggression. Title printed in red. Name of author given at foot of last page: '---- By LIN TA-KUANG.' In fair condition, aged, and on browned high-acidity newsprint, in creased wraps. Copy 2: 'Daily News Release' copy. Title given in black. Apparently identical in its typesetting to Copy 1, but without the author's name. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with short pencil notes on cover and elsewhere.

50pp., 8vo, stapled as issued, minor defects, mainly good. Note: Unless otherwise indciated, these materials are full translations of articles appearing in Chinese Communist newspapers or releases emanating from Chinese Communist news agencies.

The three documents mimeographed on folio paper. Part III: 21pp. Part IV: 24pp. Part V: 18pp.; totalling 63pp. All three in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with the last leaves of Parts III and IV loose.

60pp., foolscap 8vo. Dogeared, and with first and last leaf creased, otherwise very good on lightly-aged paper. With a few manuscript corrections (by Hyde?). The talk itself covers pp.1-22, and the session of 'Questions and Answers' pp.23-60. Typed notes in the text (Spelling?', 'Distorted', 'Indistinct') indicate that the transcription was made from a recording. Besides the questions in the latter section are pencil notes relating to the identity of the questioner ('Craig', 'Scott', 'Asian', 'Australian').

8pp., foolscap 8vo. With a few pencil emendations. In good condition. The document is divided into sections discussing MCP aims, tactics, 'Youth, Students and Schoolchildren', 'Labour', propaganda, 'The United Front', and a conclusion. 'It should be clearly understood that the Malayan Communist Party owes allegiance to the World Communist Movement led by the Soviet Union, with Communist China in close support, which aims to set up (by revolutionary means if necessary) a World Union of Socialist Soviet Republics.

First document: 'PART E601 | SPECIAL BRANCH'. 3pp., foolscap 8vo. Creased, otherwise good. Begins with 'Definition', then description of 'main duties', 'Organisation', 'Contingent Special Branch', 'Circle Special Branch' and 'Military Intelligence Officers'. Second document: 'PART E603 | SPECIAL BRANCH LIAISON WITH UNIFORM BRANCH'. 1p., foolscap 8vo. Creased, otherwise good. The 'Guide' is 18pp., foolscap 8vo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Subjects include the Cultural Revolution, "the power struggle in China", etc (comprehensive coverage of events etc). Copies/runs in several OCLC/WorldCat Libraries (American). None on COPAC. Names of recipients sometimes recorded. From the personal papers of C.A.A. Nicol, latterly Special Branch, Hong Kong, but at the time of publication of this periodical Head of E.I. Department, Federal Police Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), these being his office copies.

Pamphlet, [24]pp, 12mo, white printed wraps, stapled (sl. rusty), partially unopened, minor damage and staining. Includes the text of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and part of the Gettysburg Address" and similarly uplifting material, putting the US in a favourable light. No copy listed on OCLC/COPAC.

Mimeographed, ab;133pp., printed wraps, stapled (sl. rusty), good condition. The words "Central Intelligence Agency" with an address have been excised in blue ink but the CIA stamp remains on the front cover. This copy belonged to "SR Section" whatever that means. Found in the personal papers of C.A.A. Nicol who, in 1960, was Head of Perak State Special Branch, and was later to work for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (and MoD) in Hong Kong where he studied "political and economic developments in China.".

The collection is in very good condition, lightly-aged, and with only a handful of items with light damp staining. 60 issues of Peking Review ('A weekly magazine of Chinese news and views') between 4 January 1963 and 17 December 1965, comprising 17 issues from 1963, between no. 1 (4 January) and no. 25 (21 June); one issue from 1964 (no. 49, 4 December); 42 issues from 1965, between no. 6 (5 February) and no. 51 (17 December). Accompanying the issues are two of the air mail envelopes in which the magazine was sent to Basil Stein in London from China by distributors Guozi Shudian.

1p., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged grey paper. The words 'Admiralty, S.W.' and 'I HAVE received and laid before my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty your letter of the' are printed, with the rest written by a secretary, apart from Romaine's bold, firm signature. According to the letter Maude's letter of 5 May was 'addressed to Lord Panmure', and suggested 'the expediency of towing to their destination the Gun Boats, with high-pressure Engines, about to be employed on service in China'. Maude is addressed as 'E. J. Maude Esqre. | The Old Hall | Knostrop | Leeds'.

2pp., folio. Disbound. Fold mark. Fair, on lightly-aged and creased paper. The title, lengthwise on the reverse, ends: '[...] Admiral King; and, Copy of Report as to how the Captured Vessels and Property were disposed of, and what Amount of Prize Money was shared by the respective Captors; &c. | (Colonel Sykes.)' At the head of the return is a communication from Briggs repeating the title, dated from the Admiralty, 10 May 1866.
