Papert has been described by by Marvin Minsky as 'the greatest living mathematics educator'. At the time of this paper he was studying for a PhD at Cambridge University and living in London, where he was a leading figure in the revolutionary socialist circle centred on the magazine 'Socialist Review'. 9pp., 8vo. Pamphlet, 8vo: 50 pp + 8 pp of plates. Stitched. In original blue printed wraps. Minor staining. 56 diagrams in text (figs 1-56), which is followed by 17 photographs (figs. 57 to 73) as plates on art paper. Good, on lightly aged paper, with bottom corner at rear dogeared and slight wear and small stain to wraps. Presentation copy: 'No charge' in pencil on front wrap, which also carries the light ownership stamp of 'P. P. GRIFFITHS' at the head. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC.

On aged and toned high-acidity paper, chipping at edges. Five documents, four of them in the original French with English translations, and the fifth ('Declaration made by the Earl of Derby before the signature of the Protocol') in English. Persis Burkitt. | July 17th.' Bookplate in green and black of D. Tecwyn Lloyd. The "second book printed at the Essex House Press".

An important work in the history of eronautics by one of the great experimental physicists of the nineteenth century. Excessively scarce: no copy of this offprint in the British Library or on COPAC. 'In this lecture Rayleigh discusses the method of calculating the mechanical forces on a plane presented obliquely to a current of air, so far as this can be done. At best, the calculation is very incomplete.

Dimensions roughly 48cm square, folding four times to dimensions 24 x 9cm, with 'M. OF A.' printed in blue ink diagonally across front. An unusual piece of Monty memorabilia. Found among Anthony Brett-James's papers.

The title, lengthwise on the reverse, ends: '[...] Admiral King; and, Copy of Report as to how the Captured Vessels and Property were disposed of, and what Amount of Prize Money was shared by the respective Captors; &c. | (Colonel Sykes.)' At the head of the return is a communication from Briggs repeating the title, dated from the Admiralty, 10 May 1866.

2pp., 12mo. 24 lines. On the rectos of two leaves of a bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with neat thin strips of paper from mount adhering at head and tail of second page. He begins by acknowledging the safe receipt of the paper knife, and thanking her 'for the kindness & promptness of carrying out my wish. I certainly thought the article could not be entirely strange that it could not be discovered in six weeks'.

311pp., folio. With page of 'Errata' laid down on rear pastedown, under the manuscript heading 'COPY NO. 3. (PB).' With fold-out map of North America, and numerous plans and diagrams laid down in text, as well as several full-page plates. In original blue buckram binding, with 'REPORT ON AMERICAN VISIT | 1946.' in gilt on the spine. Good, on lightly-aged and spotted paper.

[v] + 135pp., folio. With diagrams and plans in text, and one large fold-out diagram of '100 Ton Waste Paper Cleaning System'. A well-produced item, well-typed and with clear diagrams, bound in navy buckram with 'REPORT ON AMERICAN VISIT | 1954' on the spine. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The text is preceded by an Index, a map of North America, and an itinerary. The 'objects of the visit' are given on the first page as '(a) To obtain information on the current production practice in Woodpulp and Paperboard Mills.

Two pages, grubby but text clear and complete, with obscure stamp (information about acknowledgment?). The order from the Paper Control forbidding the publication of the Channel Islands Review is a real hardship to Refugee Islanders also to some of the 9,000 serving soldiers and seamen many of whom have wives, children and relatives in the occupied islands. | As the Review was only supplied on order and copies were passed on to friends the quantity of paper used must have been very small.

Folio, 22 pp, followed by 28 full-page plates of equipment designed to increase safety in the mills. Stitched. In original blue printed wraps. Text and plates clear and complete. Internally good, on aged paper. Wraps worn and chipped. Wraps with stamp and withdrawn stamp of University of Hull. No copy on COPAC or WorldCat.

The collection comprises: A. 6 Autograph Letters, one signed John R. Forrest , 3 ending Farewell and 2 possibly incomplete or simply unsigned, to John Abraham of Liverpool, England, addressed as cousin, druggist, 1847-1879, various formats, total 27 (twenty-seven) pages, some lines faint, good condition. Subjects: (1847) introductory; personal and family information; Montreal connection; Vermont industries; railway about to be connected; I am a real Yankee by this time; jobs he's done inc. agent for the Liberty Gazette; currently doing a variety of jobs inc.

Thirty pages, on both sides of fifteen leaves of landscape folio, with each leaf folded in to give the item a 4to shape. Paginated 389 to 418, and printed in double column. Disbound. Stitched as issued, with uncut edges. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Excerpted from the Proceedings of the Royal Society, London, 1778. ESTC citation number N72283. The first two pages comprise an 'Explanation to the Columns' which form the rest of the paper, these being detailed meteorological tables.

Number 174 of 'Two hundred numbered copies [...] printed by hand on mould-made paper.' 8vo: [ii] + 9 pp. Stitched pamphlet of twelve leaves, with four vignettes giving it a distinct chap-book feel. COPAC only lists copies at the British Library and Oxford. Prefatory note by 'E. G-H.' [Eddie Gathorne-Hardy].

All the items except the cut-out and the last card (in which he gives the price of a painting) are damp-stained, with part of the text of the letter illegible. One card in French. The first card, from 1982, thanks Ives for payment for 'watercolors'. The cut-out, in red paper, is roughly 10 x 10 cm. Intricately-cut, it depicts a long-leaved plant in a basket on legs. Although found with the other items, there is no indication that it is by Duramel. Ives made the news in 2000, when his extensive collection of paintings by L. S. Lowry was put up for sale.

Each item is on a sheet of laid paper, 39 x 29 cm, and each with the Roycroft watermark. Both items are grubby, with wear and creasing to extremities, but with the design and much of the margin entirely undamaged. Both have an identical block of printed text (roughly 13.5 x 9 cm) at the centre: 'THE truth is that in human service there is no low or high degree: the woman who scrubs is as WORTHY of RESPECT as the man who Preaches | ELBERT HUBBARD'.

Printed in black, blue, red, green and gold on one side of a piece of tissue paper roughly 37 cm square. Good, on lightly creased paper with a little wear to extremities. The text, with a woodcut portrait of the king (10 x 8.5 cm) in black at its centre, is enclosed in a coloured border of flags and flowers. The text descibes the 'programme of the first week' of the King's visit, with the 'route to be taken by King Manuel on his visit to the Guildhall', and a list of the 'distinguished guests who have been inivited to the reception and luncheon'.
