17.5 x 25 cm. In good condition, on lightly-aged and worn paper. In the bottom left-hand corner, in a close contemporary hand, in ink: 'The site for Hungerford Suspension Bridge. | from J Sachs, 203, Strand'. (203 Strand was the address of Abbott, Barton & Co., advertising agents.) In pencil at bottom left: 'Clifton -', with the word 'River' in lighter pencil towards the centre. The view, in grey pencil wash, shows a pleasing view down the Avon Gorge, with the Bridge's two towers the only part of the structure completed.

On one side of a 15 x 39 cm piece of Whatman paper. A fragile survival: aged, worn and stained. Drawn to a scale of two inches to 30 feet. Central ground plan ('The Court 73 feet') showing, with size, 'Malting', 'Ale Tonhouse', 'Bear [sic] Tonhouse', 'Brewhouse', 'Milhouse', 'Hop Room' and 'Office', 'Spirit Cellar', 'Tender Trade'. The ground plan is flanked by two elevations. The first is captioned 'The Front of Malting &c to South 71 Feet', and the second, 'The Front of the Malting in the Court Side &c 47 feet'.

In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with discoloration to the reverse showing through slightly at corners. Dimensions: paper 23 x 32 cm; plate 20 x 30 cm; image 15 x 23 cm.

1p., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with Kirkaldy postmark, to 'Thos. Bywater Esq | Wemyss Castle | Kirkaldy'. Reads: 'I have your notice & meant to have sent you the Baln. of Rent tomorrow but the remittances I was counting on have not come forward today & I am going to Melrose fair tomorrow before Post time & wont be back till the end of the week but you may count upon it on Monday or Tuesday next week when I expect to be here again'.

ONE: The copy writ is 2pp., 8vo. On a leaf of laid paper with crown watermark. Aged and worn, and separated into two halves along central vertical crease line. Headed 'George R', the document begins: 'Whereas the Land Owners and Inhabitants within ye: Counties of Cheshire & Lancashire have most hbly represented unto us That Cross ye: River Mercy wch runs between those Counties had been built three Stone Bridges vizt. Warrington Bridge Stockport Bridge and Crossford Bridge and a Wooden Bridge called Carington Bridge'.

2pp., 4to. 31 lines of text. Good, on lightly-aged paper, but the first leaf of the letter only. He writes that he is pleased to receive a letter from Erskine ('your Lordship') after 'so long an interruption'. 'I forebore till I had heard from you to take the liberty of congratulating you upon your Marriage' (Erskine had married the previous October). The second page ends: 'I have never been able to learn whether your Good Mother Lady Buchan was in England or not.

2pp., landscape 12mo. In good condition, with minor water stain. He begs Driberg's pardon for having to 'break my engagement to play Bridge with you on Saturday evening - though it seems very impolite when I accepted so long ago': 'The fact is that the Master of Trinity has announced his intention of bringing the Belgian Ambassador to dine with me in Hall at Magdalene on that evening, and I regard this as so near to a Royal Command that I dare not evade it!' He hopes that '[w]ith this amount of notice' Driberg will be able to find a replacement, and asks for 'another chance later on'.

On a piece of thick paper, 36.5 x 38 cm. In fair condition, on aged and spotted and dusty paper, flattened out after being tightly furled, with one short closed tear in margin repaired with archival tape. The field plan is delicately drawn in ink to a 'Scale of four inches to one mile', and coloured in green, blue, grey and red.

4pp., 12mo. Printed in brown on cream laid paper. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. 58 lines in 13 stanzas. Headpiece attributed to Crane in pencil at head of first page, and clearly his (central figure of Diana, with reapers on either side). The first stanza reads: 'I'll rede ye a lay of a goodly band | That gathered from near and far | To a broad fair Strath of Bonnie Scotland | 'Mid the woods and waters rare.' Second stanza: 'O!

4to (22.5 x 19), 2 pp. Text complete in forty-three lines. On aged and stained paper, with wear and closed tears to extremities. The first three lines are 'This is the Bridge that was blown into air. | These are the Miners who had the care | Of mining the Bridge that was blown into air'. Three corrections in the same hand. The poem was printed in the Morning Chronicle, 24 November 1813, under the title 'Buonaparte's Bridge', and reprinted in 'The Spirit of the Public Journals for 1813', that version containing a couple of minor variations [authorial?] from the present text. Letter: 12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium. Good, on aged paper, with small rust stain at head from paperclip. She is writing to Harmsworth ('President, Dr Johnson's House') to ask him to accept a copy of 'my Journal in which mention is made of my Portrait of Dr Samuel Johnson which hangs in the Garrett of Dr Samuel Johnson house this was presented by H. B. Wheatley whom I knew for many years.' On a visit to the curator of Johnson's house she was 'pleased to see the picture still hands in its original place'.

Six of the letters are 4to, 1 p; the other is 12mo, 1 p. All good, on lightly aged paper. All bearing the Society's stamp and most docketed. On a variety of subjects: a proposed paper by 'Herr Frahm', the use by the Institution of the Royal Society's library for a council meeting, the delivery to the Society of a 'model tank that is coming from Germany' ('the reader of the paper is sending his representative over from Germany to superintend matters'), and a 'Proposed Memorial to the late Sir William White' ('with reference to Mr. Bailey Saunders and Mr. C. R. Graves.

12mo bifolium: 1 p. 11 lines of text. Address and docketing on second leaf. Good, but with 1 cm hole in first leaf of bifolium, possibly caused by breaking open of blue wafer, which still adheres. Hole causing loss to two words, including latter part of signature. Asks the recipient 'de remettre a Mr. Pousin conducteur des ponts et chaussees, un double demi metre en Cuivre et un metre en cuivre avec quatre petites roulettes pointilles'. He will pay for the order in a few days time.

8vo: 12 pp. Very good, in original blue cloth account book of twelve leaves, with title on label on front board. Label of Waterlow & Sons inside front cover. The entries spread across six sets of two facing pages, all ruled with red printed lines and in boxes and with the following seven categories printed at the head: 'No. on Plan'; 'DESCRIPTION.'; 'State of Cul[ivatio]n.'; 'Value per Acre'; 'Statute | A. R. P. [i.e. acreage]'; 'Value. | £ s.

Dimensions roughly three and a half inches by three. One page, blank reverse. On aged paper, with some staining along one edge and crude ink marking, including 'Bookes bound', in a contemporary hand. Twenty-seven lines, beginning 'ROBERT AKENHEAD [...] sells the Goods followsng, [sic] viz. | BIBLES, Common-Prayers, and all other Sorts of Books of Divinity, History, Physick, Mathematicks.

On piece of paper roughly eleven inches by eight wide. 'Col[oure]d 2/6' engraved in bottom right-hand corner above caption. On aged paper, creased and with two closed tears of one and a half inches apiece, and one of half an inch, none of the three affecting the image. Full-length portrait of a somewhat simian Harrison, in black top hat and brown cut away jacket, clutching his arms in front of his belly with one glove removed, standing on a grassy hill (in front of Chester Castle?]. Two small ink docketings on reverse.

British architect (1849-1930), noted for his work on Buckingham Palace, Admiralty Arch, the Victoria & Albert Museum, etc. All five items very good, though dusty. Two docketed and all five bearing R.S.A. stamp. ITEM ONE (one page, quarto, 5 January 1917): 'I have had the possibility of a paper on Charing Cross Bridge before me since you mentioned it. The matter is coming up in Parliament next Session & I think it would be extremely difficult for me to read such a paper just as a Parliamentary discussion or Committee is coming on. I feel sure you will see my position in the matter.

Belgian writer (1878-1953), author of the fairy-tale 'The two hunchbacks', set to music by Frank Bridge. One page, quarto. Poor, on discoloured, creased paper with several closed tears. He thanks her for her letter and has 'written to Miss Sands to ask her if she could not possibly alter the date as I have another lecture on the same day, at night. But if impossible, I will come all the same.' Signed 'Em Cammaerts'. Docked in pencil, by 'HSJ', 'Dec: 4. 1915. I heard M.

English politician (1877-1938), MInister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Secretary of the Architecture Club. All four items one page, quarto, and in very good condition. Last item with one inch closed horizontal tear (not affecting text). Three items stamped and two bearing the Society's stamp. All four signed 'J. H. Elder-Duncan'. ITEM ONE: At a recent meeting of the Architecture Club committee Arthur J. Davis 'raised the question of our helping in some way to give wider publicity to your prizes for design'.

English civil engineer (1840-1907), who built the Forth Rail Bridge and worked on the Metropolitan and District Railways of the London Underground. Both items one page, octavo, on grey paper. Both in good condition, stamped and docketed. The note, signed 'B. Baker', reads 'I am sorry to say the Glasgow University Jubilee will prevent me and I have no doubt others from beingn at Marlborough House on the 14th.' The slip reads 'With Sir Benjamin Baker's Compliments.'

English architect who built a bridge over the Thames at Richmond. Relates to the lease by him to Graham of property in Queen Street, Mayfair. Signed and sealed by both parties. On the reverse is an assignment of 7 December 1847 from Graham to Elizabeth Anne Howard of 12 Thurloe Square, Brompton. With various seals and stamps. Written in black ink and ruled with red lines.
