ALI

Between 1916 and circa 1966. 'Chu Chin Chow' was a hugely-popular extravaganza based on 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves', which, produced and directed by the Australian actor-manager Oscar Asche (1871-1936), premièred in London in 1916, and ran for five years and 2238 performances (more than twice as many as any previous piece), followed by numerous productions and revivals worldwide, as well as two British feature films. The phenomenal success of the piece may be gauged from the fact that it earned Asche alone £200,000.

13pp., 8vo, paginated 41-53. Stapled, in brown printed wraps. On aged and worn paper, with rusted staples. Largely unopened. A learned exposition, with quotations in the original, beginning: 'It is now possible for me to supplement my Arabic text of Ali Baba by printing in full the only other original version so far known. I shall add some further information which I have gathered on the identity of the scribe of the Bodleian MS. and various notes on the text of that version.' No copy in the British Library, and a total of six copies on OCLC WorldCat and COPAC.

Two items, in good condition. ONE: Duplicated typescript (1p., 8vo) headed 'TRANSLATION | MINISTRY OF INTERIOR. | DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF UIDANCE [sic] AND BROADCASTING'. Dated from 'Baghdad (Iraq)' on 11 February 1958. A letter of introduction for 'Mr. G. Wynne-Rushton', to five government ministries from 'Staff Brigadier Muhsen Mohamed Ali, Acting Director General of Guidance & Broadcasting'. Begins: 'Mr. G. Wynne-Rushton, who is now staying in Baghdad, is the Advertising Manager of Messrs.

Presumably printed up by Jung for circulation on his unsuccessful mission to England in 1876 to press the claims for the restoration of the Berar to Hyderabad. 23 numbered items of printed correspondence, each separately paginated, and totalling 144pp., 4to. The whole stitched together with red thread. No covers. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Entirely in English. All dated from Hyderabad unless stated otherwise. The 23 items are as follows: 1. Sir Salar Jung to Colonel Lumsden. 19 September 1872. 2pp. 2. Jung and Ameer-i-Kubeer to Colonel Lumsden. 19 September 1872. 8pp.

Three items: the full article, the beginning of an earlier draft, and an annotated table. All in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Unusually, the article is not written from a British point of view, but rather in praise Jung's achievements from within Hyderabad itself (the author refers to 'the results we have here obtained'). Despite complaining of what he calls the 'scant records have come down to us', the author is able to present his case with a deal of economic information.

Folio, 2 pp. The English on the recto of the first sheet, and the Arabic on the reverse of the second. Text clear and complete. On aged and worn paper. Begins: 'Praise be to God. | And thereupon The respectable Ahmed Ibn Ali divorced his wife Madam Fattoumeh Bent Muhammed, now absent from divorce meeting and from it's [sic] country (i.e.

On a piece of grey paper roughly 25 x 22 cm, with card backing. The backing is rough-edged, the picture having been removed from its mount, but the edges of the print itself are undamaged. A little grubby, and with minor spotting and staining. Depicts the moustachioed sitter's head in profile, looking to his right, wearing a white guthra with decorative igaal. The image includes a reproduction of Jemmett's signature in the bottom right-hand corner, with the sitter's signature, in Arabic script, reproduced in the bottom left-hand corner.

All three items good, on lightly aged paper. The first two items were formerly attached to one another by a pin. ITEM ONE (one page, folio): Blond to Ali, 6 December 1967, on letterhead of Anthony Blond Ltd, Publishers. Characteristically punchy letter of clarification, headed 'WHO Really Is WHO', and beginning 'This is just to clarify the situation between us'. A list of eight points, the first of which reads 'You are wholly employed compiling this book at a salary of £1,500 per annum for one year.
