Beneath this, in small type is the prospectus, stressing the 'immense Labour and Expense' attending the work (Lewis later claimed had taken six years to compile it, at an outlay of £48,000), which is to be 'published in Four Volumes Quarto - Price 30s.

Pamphlet: 19pp., small 4to. Stapled pamphlet in cream wraps, with the Hospital's arms printed in gold on front cover. On shiny art paper, with full-page frontispiece, seven illustrations in text, and two maps at rear. Internally in fair condition, lighty-aged; in worn wraps with slight discolouration to the back. Uncommon. No copy at the British Library; four copies on COPAC, all at London libraries (Guildhall; King's College; Bishopsgate; Wellcome); and only one more copy (Yale) on OCLC WorldCat. Programme: 2pp., 4to, on a single leaf. In fair condition, aged and worn, neatly folded.

13pp., 8vo, paginated 41-53. Stapled, in brown printed wraps. On aged and worn paper, with rusted staples. Largely unopened. A learned exposition, with quotations in the original, beginning: 'It is now possible for me to supplement my Arabic text of Ali Baba by printing in full the only other original version so far known. I shall add some further information which I have gathered on the identity of the scribe of the Bodleian MS. and various notes on the text of that version.' No copy in the British Library, and a total of six copies on OCLC WorldCat and COPAC.

One page, 4to, c.35 x 24cm, folded (with marks), creased slightly at edges and on folds, some foxing and pinholes, blank reverse grubby, with two small woodcuts at top. A sheet containing a number of Christmas songs: The Black Decree (Herod); O see man's Saviour in Bethlehem born; While Shepherds watch'd their Flocks by Night; On Christmas Night all Christians sing. No other copy traced.

[2] + 64pp., 4to. Blue printed wraps. Aged and worn, with wraps detached and heavily-worn at extremities. Inscribed at head of front cover: 'Professor Tilden | with the Author's kind regards'. Attractively presented, with tables and 21 illustrations in text. A scarce item: no copy at the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at the Warburg Institute; a further four copies on OCLC WorldCat.

[1] + 8pp. Dated on p.8: 'Broom Hill, Tunbridge Wells, | January 1st, 1876.' In good condition, lightly-aged, with central vertical fold, front wrap only, disbound. Title on front wrap, which is printed on shiny paper. Printed at head of title: 'With the Author's Compliments.' The author is in favour of the employment of women, as this would 'diminish the number of our unemployed poor, instead of supporting institutions for their relief'. His scheme 'divides itself into three divisions': '1. - To provide better education for girls, and improved means for studying when they are grown up. | 2.

Pamphlet, 19pp., 8vo, disbound, library marks on title page. "Read before the Geographical Section of the British Association at York in 1881." The survey included the territory of modern-day Israel. Siegried's aim is to 'study as frankly as possible the spirit of Franco-American relations. Then - and this might look bold, as I am speaking to a British audience - I will try to analyse what I think is the spirit of Anglo-American relations.

Mostly devoted to British artists, the collection included a Constable, couple of Turners, three Gainsboroughs and four by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC or WorldCat at Oxford.

LETTER: 1p., 4to, with 26 lines of text. In fair condition, on aged paper, with rust marks from paperclip in one margin. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | I send you a report - the latest we have issued. It is cut down to 1/3 of its usual size. The regulations given are prewar conditions & hardly obtain now. We now require a man to pay what he can [last three words underlined] towards his board but no good candidate would be rejected because he could not find a penny. Practically this obtained before the war but we emphasise that now.
