Richard, who asks for the letter to beb regarded as confidential, is sorry to have to state that when Appleton ceased to be 'collector for the Peace Society, and his books and papers came into our hands, we found serious irregularities in his accounts'. Richard assumes that it is as a result of Appleton being exposed, 'and explanations being demanded of him', that he wrote to him. 'But he is now refunding the defalcations, and we are unwilling by exposure to ruin his character & prospects'.

P.3 is headed 'World's Peace Congress' and lists the organisations officers, including among the 23 Vice Presidents William Cullen Bryant and the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. An extract from a letter of endorsement by Harriet Beecher Stowe is on p.14, and John Stuart Mill is among the 'absent friends' named on p.15. Title given in black. Apparently identical in its typesetting to Copy 1, but without the author's name. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with short pencil notes on cover and elsewhere.

Letter: 1p., 12mo. Fair, on lighty-aged paper. Hazard does not 'hold the bonds you allude to', but still has some other interests in relation to a named party. He will be in New York 'ere long'. Docketed on the reverse: 'Does not hold La C Bond | Wil be in N Y before long'. The receipt is attractively printed on one side of a piece of 16 x 6.5 cm paper. In good condition. Hazard acknowledges receipt from the company of $56.87, the dividend on inusrance policy 1931. Signed by him 'Peace Dale Mg Co | [signed] R G Hazard Jnor'. The two items appear unconnected.

Folio, 4 pp. Bifolium. On laid paper. The drophead title (of which the start is quoted above) runs to 14 lines. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Printed in double column. Yeoman signs in type at the end of the document, which contains three reports, each signed in type by the chairman of the committee which produced it: Mauleverer for the Visiting Justices; Lockwood for the Finance Committee; and Johnstone for the Committee of Visitors of the Noth and East-Ridings' Lunatic Asylum.

On aged and browned high-acidity paper. Two-page publisher's note (describing his 'dilemma' in publishing the book), and three-page introduction by Burchett, dated 'Kaesong, November 4, 1952.' The blurb begins 'THIS MONSTROUS WAR tells how Syngman Rhee climbed to power; how the U.S. State Department tried to drop him and failed; why Rhee needed a war and why it suited the U.S.

All four items with text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The four items pinned together and placed in the stamped envelope of Cameron's letter, addressed to Dickson as 'Clerk of the Peace of the County of Northumberland | Newcastle upon Tyne'. The collection in good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with each item carrying a punch-hole in top left-hand corner of first page. Letter One: in manuscript; to Cross; 3 September 1949; on 'Edvard Hambro' letterhead; 8vo, 2 pp. Affectionate letter on Cross's retirement from the Registry of the International Court. '[...] I find the Peace Palace curiously empty without you. I am going to miss your visits to my room and mine to yours.

Both items in very good condition: on lightly aged and creased paper. Both in French.

All four items well printed on one side of a piece of watermarked laid paper. All four lightly-aged but good. None of them filled in. The third item more dusty than the rest. Item One (15.5 x 20.5 cm): Headed 'No. VII. A PROTECTION.' To be signed by one of the 'Deputy Lieutenant, | Captain, | Commanding Officer.' Exempting the bearer, as a militia man, 'from doing any Highway Duty, commonly called Statute Work'.

4to, 1 p, 8 lines. Lightly creased and with a little smudging from a carbon and some minor paperclip staining (none of which affects the signature). He is sending 'a short article [not present] - "Art in the Post War World", and a copy of an address to "The Auckland Society of Arts." ' He believes 'that countries like New Zealand, cut off from the inspiration and example of what is best in European Art, are prone to be dazzled by Materialistic Efficiency; even when linked with the best technical flavourings through Art in industry.'

One leaf, 4to. On the recto (headed "Progress of the Movement") the motion Henry Richard has given notice of in Parliament is quoted and discussed as well as other initiatives taken round the world, concluding with the American Peace Society "working energetically . . . [holding] meetings . . . to celebrate the Victory of the Washington Treaty . . . addressed by . . . . Elihu Burritt . . . and other eminent men." On the verso (headed "International Arbitration.

Spanish author. Two pages, 4to. He writes concerning the World Unity Movement of which Polak is a sponsor, criticising the Chairman, James Avery Joyce. With: a TLS, 2pp., 4to, from Joyce to Polak referring to a note he has received from de Madariaga (copy enclosed) and describing his difficulties in finding a speaker. He also asks for his expenses from an American trip which de Madariaga found offensive.

Evans Darby to the Chevalier Dr Karl de Scherzer, He informs his correspondent that the last “universal Peace Congress” in Chicago decided to invite eminent jurists “to form a Committee for thepurpose of considering the question of an International Court of Arbitration”. As a member of the provisional committee, he has beenasked to prepare a list for this committee for Europe. He invites hiscorrespondent to join it (“I should not think that it would involve muchlabour or responsibility”).
