He explains the reason for a delay to the test: 'La Cte du gaz de Toulouse qui paraissait disposée a entreprendre un essai immediat de cette formation en retarde indefiniment l'execution, sans doute à cause de certains desaccords avec l'administrateur de la Société des Raffineries catalytiques, mon ami Blanchet'. The second half of the letter discusses the technical aspects of the test.

8vo: 1 p. Good, laid down on the reverse of the front free endpaper of a copy of Andre Maurois's 'The Life of Sir Alexander Fleming' (London, 2nd imp., 1959). Reads 'Thank you very much. We would be delighted to be with you on Nov 12th. I think all is well with me now & I am off to Edinburgh on Monday. | Yours sincerely | [signed] Alec. Fleming'. The context is explained on pp. 265-6 of the book. 'In October 1953 he was due to make a speech at the opening of 'Les Journees Medicales' in Nice. Two days before the appointed date, he woke up with a high fever. He himself diagnosed pneumonia.

In 1925 Mann encountered the Nuremberg bookseller Ida Herz: a lifelong friendship followed, which was, according to Mann's biographer Anthony Heilbut, 'motored largely by her phenomenal devotion'. The present collection, comprising items, is in good condition, lightly aged and worn. (Seven leaves from Hamilton's letters have tearing to margins resulting in slight loss to text, and three leaves have damp-staining.) At the time the items were written Herz was living at 95 Gilling Court, Belsize Grove, London. Hamilton's letters total: 16pp., 4to.; 30pp., 8vo; 1p., 12mo.

26pp., 12mo. Stitched. In remains of original printed wraps. On aged paper, in chipped wraps, with several leaves loose. An important work in the history of eronautics by one of the great experimental physicists of the nineteenth century. Excessively scarce: no copy of this offprint in the British Library or on COPAC. 'In this lecture Rayleigh discusses the method of calculating the mechanical forces on a plane presented obliquely to a current of air, so far as this can be done. At best, the calculation is very incomplete.

One page, cr. 8vo, two small holes (loss of letter] spotted, tiny closed tears, fold marks, mainly good condition. Headed "Expériences avec la Nitroglycerine", the name of the invitee to be filled in "M...", giving directions for two days of experiments at Hal and Lessines, Programme of "Expériences théoriques / Explosions de différentes Minen". NOte: Alfred Novel and Co. was founded in June 1865. No record yet found of these experiments. Scan on my website.

Thirteen pages, paginated [i] + 1-12, on one side each of thirteen leaves, each roughly 37.5 x 16.5 cm. Each page laid out for 55 lines in the text point size (the point size for quotations is smaller). Unbound and attached by a staple in the upper inner corner. Good, with first and last leaves a little grubby and upper two corners dogeared. The first page, headed 'SEPTEMBER 4, 1951 | VOLUME V - BOOK II', is unpaginated, and carries the chapter title and sixteen-line synopsis. The following twelve pages, paginated 1-12, are each headed 'Vol. V - Bk. II - Chap. XVIII - On the Eve'.

Iin French. One page, 8vo. He is sorry that he does not know Gerard (Gerhard) Hauptmann's work well enough to "rendre . . . hommage", pass judgement not sufficiently "motive", "ne serait pas digne du poete dont une sorte de justice litteraire immanente m'a appris a venerer le nous(?)". (Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize for literature in this year, 1912.)

Laurence A201. 12mo: 15 pp. Stapled eight-leaf pamphlet. Very good, with a little rusting to staples, and in slightly grubby covers. Attractively printed. Note beneath title: 'This is a verbatim report with only trivial corrections of an impromptu speech at a luncheon given by Mr. Eric Macfadyen on October 30th, 1930, at the Savoy Hotel, on behalf of the building fund of the Settlement. It is thought that it would be interesting to have Mr. Shaw's words just as he delivered them without any attempt at rearrangement or revision.' Loosely inserted are a printed donation and bequeathal slips.

8vo: 10 pp. Three figures. Lightly aged, but good. In original green printed wraps. Two punch holes to inner margin. 'With the compliments of the authors' by Ellis on front wrap. Ellis was co-author, with Rutherford and Chadwick, of 'Radiations from Radioactive Substances' (CUP, 1930), a work said by A. R. Mackintosh ('The Third Man: Charles Drummond Ellis, 1895-1980', Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London, July, 1995) to have been 'often referred to as the "Bible" of nuclear physics', with Ellis's contribution to the work placing him 'third among equals'.
