MADRAS

Eight witty and attractive caricatures, in a sub-Punch style. All eight in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Each in black ink on a separate piece of paper, five of them 33.5 x 21.5 cm, and three of them 21 x 17 cm. The context of the caricatures is at present obscure, but would undoubtedly make itself clear with specialist research. The five largest illustrations are: ONE: Caption: 'Please to remember | The twenty-seventh of November | The "Bilk-Powder" treason and plot'.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. 53 lines. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with discoloration at the head of both leaves, not affecting the text of the letter. He is sending his 'account for June; and also a Copy of my journal', having 'returned some days ago from Culna'. He feels that 'Things bear a favourable appearance there', and would like to mention an idea he has had. 'Some respectable people of Krishnugur invited me to come to them & to make that place my residence.

3pp., 4to. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. With stamped envelope, bearing Bhavnagar and Harrow postmarks, with typed address to 'R. T. Hughes, Esq. | Aboyne, | Harrow-on-the-Hill. | England.' He begins by thanking Hughes for the 'very pleasant surprise' of 'the unique photograph'. 'It is very kind of you and Mrs.

4to, 19 pp. Stitched and unbound. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Folded, and addressed in manuscript from India (with postmark and stamp) to C. H. E. Carmichael in London. Begins: 'A meeting of the friends and admirers of the Hob'ble D. F. Carmichael, of the Madras Civil Service, was held in a Shamiana, on the grounds attached to "The Mansion," the residence of the Hon.

Both marked 'Duplicate'. 1. [British Navy, East Indies and China Station, 1833] Vice Admiral Sir John Gore, extensive official Report signed, "John Gore, Vice Adm. & Com. In Chief", East Indies and China Station to Sir James Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty, dated Melville, March 4th 1833, Madras Roads, marked 'Duplicate', 6pp., folio, sewn. A detailed assessment of the situation in the region (Indian Ocean) and particularly in Ceylon : Arrival in the Madras Roads. He assures Graham of full cooperation "regarding the Mauritius".

12mo, 2 pp. 24 lines of text. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Laid down on a leaf from an album, in such a way as the first line of the second page can only be read in mirror image by holding the item up to the light. Marvellously indicative of the patronising attitude of the governing British classes to their Indian subjects. On visiting Venables he will 'venture to bring with me my native servant' who 'does not require much in the way of accommodation'. If Venables 'has no corner for him' in his house, asks if he can recommend 'a little room somewhere near'.

English ecclesiastic (1778-1858). Two pages, octavo. Creased, and with one edge of verso adhering to leaf from autograph album. 'I hope you will excuse the great liberty I take in asking you to help me a little in finishing the Marbling, Enclosing, Ventilating &c of the Cathedral | I have been robbed of 20,000 by the Union Bank, so that I am compelled to solicit aid from the Congregation & kind friends in my extremity'. Signed 'D Calcutta'.

Judge (1792-1853) and author. One page, 12mo. In very good condition. Reads 'My dear Mrs Adolphus, | I lament to say that severe illness makes it impossible for me to leave the house, & consequently to dine with you & <?> today. I hoped better things yesterday. | Sincerely yours | Robert Comyn'.

General, of Blair Adam, M.P., lord lieutenant of Kinross, and "a most eminent orator and Scotch judge" (DNB) One page of text, 4to, with conjugate leaf with Heath's address, postal marks (Blair Adam, etc.), some damage to latter, but text leaf in good condition. "Lord Chief Comr Adam presents his Compliments to Mr Heath with many thanks for his very elegant and acceptable pesent of the two copies of the Keepsake and the prints. / The Lord Chief Comr has received them in safety and the Picture is again here in its proper place".
