The two signatures are on a reproduction of a drawing of Robeson, on a 15 x 11 cm piece of shiny art paper, cut from a programme from Robeson's 1934 tour of Britain. In good condition, lightly-aged. The head and shoulders portrait shows a moody Robeson in collar and tie. The two signature are at the foot of the image, with Robeson's, in blue ink, slanting downwards, and Brown's, in green ink, slanting upwards, around the line of Robeson's lapels.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly-aged, with small part of paper mount adhering at head. Accepting a dinner invitation on 20 November.

13pp., large (41.5 x 33 cm) 4to. In good condition, lightly aged, on good Britannia paper. In worn wraps, with printed slip describing the item from a bookseller's catalogue (Henry Grey, 1901, 45s), and docketed at back. Neatly and closely written out in a clerk's hand. At end: 'The Abstract of this Will and Codicil is taken from the Probate thereof Granted by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury to Anne Lady Belasyse Relict of the said John Lord Belasyse and One of the Executors the 7th. of May 1690'. Belasyse's second wife was the daughter of the Marquess of Winchester.

A letter of the first importance, as Baty had been since 1916 foreign legal adviser to the Japanese Government (following the death of Henry Willard Denison), and had been part of the Japanese delegation to the 1927 Geneva disarmament conference. Such was Baty's support for the Japanese position that the British Government seriously considered trying him for treason following the Second World War, choosing instead to revoke his British citizenship. 5pp., 4to. The first five pages of the letter only, and so lacking the signature, although Baty is without doubt the author.

A total of 211pp., 8vo, paginated vii + xcviii + 105 + [1]. In red leather quarter-binding, with a coat of arms stamped in gilt on the green cloth front cover, and the title in gilt on the spine. Internally in fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in shaken and worn binding, with damage at head and tail of spine. Tastefully printed in a heavy style by Wyman and Sons. Day's 98-page introduction concludes by explaining thaht 'the documents now printed are in possession of Mr. Benett Stanford, the collateral descendant of Colonel Benett, and present member for Shaftesbury.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and creased, with traces of a grey paper mount on the reverse of the second leaf, which also has a closed tear unobtrusively repaired with archival tape.

H. G. Wells had been a member of an organisation of the same name at the end of the nineteenth century, but the two appear unrelated. The background to the present SKDS is explained in a loosely-inserted cutting from the Observer, 6 February 1938, which states that the Conservative at Kensington 'have a very vigorous Debating Society, of which the chairman is Miss Dorothy Saward. It meets once a month, and Miss Saward has been singularly successful in her choice both of motions and speakers'.

Printed on one side of a piece of 29 x 22.5 cm yellow newspaper stock. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with a 1 cm closed tear to the margin. Distinctively laid out, within a decorative border, with three vignette silhouettes of men in evening dress. Under the heading 'Double attraction', announces that 'The Excelsior Cinema Cuddapah. | Takes Pride in Presenting from Sunday 10-5-31. | Under the kind patranage [sic] of | A. G. Blake Esq., I.C.S., | Collector and District Magistrate, Cuddapah. | A Grand Show of an Assembly of | Nation Builders of India & England.

68pp., folio. Stapled. In printed card wraps in red and black, with Robert Capa photograph on cover. In fair condition, worn and aged. Markings, mainly in pencil, throughout. In manuscript at head of p.1: 'Reference copy - prices no longer apply'. Loosely inserted is a typed page carrying a list of books, headed 'SPAIN. FICTION. Spanish Civil War and after.' Southworth's foreword (2pp., in small type) is titled 'Collecting Material on the Spanish Civil War by Herbert Rutledge Southworth (Author of "El Mito de la Cruzada de Franco," "Antifalange" & numerous articles on the Spanish Civil War)'.

[1] + 88pp., 4to. Professionally typed volume, in cloth wraps covered in grey paper, with black cloth strip over stapled spine. Title on front cover and first page. Red and gold label of the Hotel Inglaterra, Havana, Cuba, laid down on blank last leaf. Internally in fair condition, on aged and ruckled paper, in worn and damp-stained covers, with damage to the spine strip. With a handful of minor manuscript emendations. The tour was made in connection with Gibb's work on the sea walls at the Boca de Ceniza at the mouth of the Magdalena River, with a new port at Barranquilla.

Both maps rolled up. The first around 9 feet long and the second around 24 feet long. Both made up of panels, laid down on cloth backing. Both aged and worn, with light fraying to extremities. ONE: Original map, drawn in black ink, and coloured in red, cream, purple, pink and blue. Title on reverse: 'NORTH LONDON RAILWAY | CITY BRANCH | DRAWING NO 1', and, on labels also on reverse, 'PLAN | Westmoreland St. to Dalston | 50 ft. Scale', and '20'. Dimensions: 53 x 281 cm. Scale: 500 feet to 10 inches. Signed at bottom right: 'William Baker | March 16. 1863' and 'Waring Brothers | 16 March 1863'.

Sanford, M.P., writing boldly to p.[82] "My Papers & Mem's as Chairman of the Civil List Pension Committee", and adding a few words of information to the margin of p.52.

2pp., 12mo. 25 lines of text. In fair conditon, on aged and worn paper. Her sister Frances is 'overjoyed at your benevolent efforts for me', and 'Mr Arthur Hall is very glad indeed to hear what you are trying to do, and is quite ready if you and I approve to send a set of my books, with a notification to Mr Gladstone, and also of privately interesting the Archbishop, who will, he has no doubt send an autograph letter privately to the Prirme Minister'. The letter ends with a prayer for her 'kind friends', concluding 'The Lord will provide'.

Black and white photographic print, 21 x 14 cm. Creased and stained, with short closed tear at head and slight loss to one corner. Robeson's inscription, in the bottom left-hand corner, reads: 'To "Dora" | With all good wishes and all good fortune. | Paul Robeson | "Show Boat" | London 1929'. The image is a head and shoulders shot of an assured Robeson in jacket, shirt and tie.

4pp., 8vo. On the rectos only of four leaves stapled together at one corner. In fair condition, on aged paper with wear at foot. Printer's slug at foot of final page. The first page begins: 'KILLED 425 WOUNDED 1764 | This list of wounded only includes gunshot and bomb wounds. Very many of those kicked almost into pulp in the streets and left for dead are not included here.

2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with slight damage to one corner. At the head of the first page is a printed form (manuscript additions in square brackets): 'County of [Derby.] The Information and Complaint of [Joseph Walker Bourne] of [Church Gresley] in the said County [Potter] taken upon Oath before [me one] of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the said County, the [27th] day of [October] 18[30]'. Written out by the magistrate Sir Oswald Mosley, 2nd Baronet (1785-1871), and signed by him ('Oswald Mosley'), his son 'Oswd Mosley Junr' (1804-1856), 'Joseph.

2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Written out in manuscript on lithographed letterhead headed 'Public Order Memorial'. Reads: 'Resolved | That after mature Consideration of the Circumstances which have occurred since the objects of the Committee were first promulgated, it is expedient that no further steps be taken in furtherance of the objects proposed, and that the Contributions already received of which Her Majesty and Members of the Royal Family have subscribed One Thousand Pounds be returned to the subscribers, the expenses incurred having been discharged by the Committee'.

In black cloth quarter-binding with marbled covers. Each opening or double-page spread is divided into 14 columns: Date of Registration; Number; Name; Date of Birth; Age. Printed on one side of a piece of 15cm square card. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Four numbered instructions, preceded by: 'There would be a great need for extra bed coverings for children should evacuation ever take place. Suitable covers can be made by sewing together squares knitted up from scraps of wool. They will always be useful even if, as we all hope, they are not needed for their original purpose.' This initiative can be dated from a reference in 'Home & Country' magazine, 1939. Scarce: no copy traced in the Imperial War Museum or elsewhere.

37pp., 12mo (including two irrelevant pages at the rear), of pencil notes, with some diagrams. In a spiral-bound 'No. 430 Reporter's Note Book' by Brown Knight & Truscott, Ltd, London. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. On cover: 'G. Reeves Atom'. The notes were made at meetings or lectures held at roughly fortnightly intervals. (The last page records 'No meetings' on 9 and 23 June.) Topics include: 'Types of Shelter', 'Refuge Room', 'Long range rocket', 'Antipersonnel Bomb' ('When a bomb is found a red flag in a stick is to be placed 3 paces to the North so that B[omb].

24pp., foolscap 8vo. With 3pp. of lithographed plates ('Copying MS.') between pp.6 and 7, giving two examples of uncorrected manuscripts for the contestants to copy out. Stitched and unbound. On aged paper, with the first and last leaves and fore-edges of plates worn and chipped at extremities. Divided into three sections: 'Regulations, &c.', 'Examination Papers' and 'Table of Marks'.

In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with crease to front cover, to which the enamel badge is also attached, beside the ownership signature of 'E J Sayer' (Downing Street secretary Elizabeth Sayer, later Cooper.). First page dated in pencil '8th Sept', and pencil note in text of the 'permitted dose' of radiation.

A substantial collection of original documents in various formats (from fold-out folio pages to 12mo, but mainly foolscap 8vo) bound into two large 8vo volumes, with the material in the first volume foliated 1-435 (with an extra nine-page index at the front and additional material at the end), and that in the second volume foliated 436-626 (preceded by seven-page index).The two volumes in matching blue cloth half-bindings, with boards in lighter blue cloth.
