ROTHSCHILD

Gedge's short obituary in The Times, 24 March 1913, contains the following brief account of his career: 'Mr. Gedge was a scholar of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was Carus and Scholefield prizeman, and obtained a first class in the examination for theological honours in 1857. He was ordained in the diocese of Lichfield, and was for seven years vicar of Brixworth, Northamptonshire.

Declining, in polite terms, to comply with her request that he consent to put his signature to 'a paragraph about myself, for the purpose of publication'. He explains that he would be 'very sorry that anything should be printed about me which I myself had [not] dictated or signed'.

1p., 4to. On aged paper with a couple of closed holes. He is 'very anxious to discuss', with Bilainkin and the Jewish Board of Deputies, 'the Appeal which [...] is in progress on behalf of the Central British Fund for Jewish Relief and Rehabilitation'.

All four items in very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Totalling 16pp., 12mo. On four bifoliums. In addition to being one of the Trustees of the British Museum, Knight was, as one of the proprietors of Knight and Porteus of Argentina, owner with his partner Colonel John James Porteus (1857-1948) of 'the largest herd of red Aberdeen-Angus in the world' (TImes, 24 April 1939), which was sold after his death. 12mo, 3 pp. On bifolium. Clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. She has 'finished the brown drawing of elves, & birds singing', and, as she is going into the country for a few days, will leave it, 'in a portfolio', at Stratton St. She asks him to 'kindly take care of it', as he has been 'good enough to do with the others. It is, as you know, a very careful & highly-finished drawing'. She asks him to have 'the delicacy of the lines reproduced, & the drawing of the limbs of the little elves, etc. very carefully & exactly rendered, otherwise the drawing wd.

3pp., large folio. Signed by Landau and Alexander. Their agreement was for a business as "Dealers on the Stock Exchange", revealing the investment of both partners, and their terms, covering terms of liquidation etc. Attached: Letter Signed 'Jas M Alexander', to Landau, 26 Feb. 1885 with information about insurance policy on his life. Note: 1885, the year of this agreement, was the year in which the Jews Temporary Shelter was founded, the improved version of which, founded 1886, attracted Landau's benevolence and active support.

The seven signatures are each cut from a letter. They are mounted in two columns on a page of grey paper, roughly 22.5 x 27.5 cm, removed from an autograph album. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper with occasional light spotting. At the head of the page is the word 'Horseman', with each individuals occupation in the same hand on the mount beneath his autograph. One (2.5 x 11 cm): '<...> delivery? | Yrs truly | Roderic Owen' ['Gentleman rider']. Two (5.5 x 11.5 cm): '<...> Yrs truly | Sam Darling' ['trainer']. Three (3.5 x 12 cm): '<...> Yours very sincerely | C. Morton' ['Trainer'].

Foolscap bifolium (leaf dimensions roughly 32 x 20 cm): 3 pp. The letter itself is of fifteen lines, on the recto of the first leaf, with five signatures beneath it and the other eighteen on the following two pages. On aged and lightly-creased paper, with chipping to extremities and traces of glue from previous mounting on the blank reverse of the second leaf. A central vertical crease has been strengthened with a thin strip of archival tape. Founded in 1908 by Stephen Paget to defend the use of animals in scientific experimentation, the Research Defence Society is still in existence.

From the third son (1845-1917) of Baron Lionel de Rothschild to the noted botanist (1843-1928), Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew (1885-1905). Stamped, printed Post Office telegraph on discoloured high-acidity paper, roughly twenty-centimeters by thirteen centimeters. Mounted on larger piece of better-quality paper, also discoloured with age. Reads 'TO { Thiselton Dyer | Kew Gardens | Very many thanks Kind congratulations | Leopold Rothschild'. The reason for congratulations is unclear.

One page, 12mo. Good, on aged paper, with a little light spotting. Folded four times and docketed in blue pencil. The body of the letter is in another hand, and reads '<...> those who have applied to me be my Excuse for troubling you. | I am, | my dear Lord | Yours very truly'. Signed 'Lionel de Rothschild', and addressed, in another hand, to 'The Viscount Sydney | " " | Lord Chamberlain'.

He was secretary to Lord Elgin in Constantinople, recovered the Rosetta Stone from the French and aided in collecting and removing the Elgin Marbles from Athens. 3 pages, 16mo. Creased but in good condition. Begins by saying that a few years ago Stuart introduced Charles Rothschild to him, 'but it was probably at the request of his brother, as he has now asked me to introduce him to you'.
