Theodore Hoppen, in his 'The Mid-Victorian Generation', refers to a 'growing band of anti-Catholic lecturers who toured Britain in the 1850s and 1860s', adding that most 'were rogues like the former Dominican, Giacinto Achilli, and the soi-disant Baron de Camin. Almost all depended financially upon admission fees. Their lurid handbills advertised travesties of the mass, "the secrets of the confessional", and "wafer Gods" to be "sold at 1d. each at the doors".' Both letters 2pp., 8vo, and both bifoliums. The pair in fair condition, aged and worn, with slight damage to second leaf of one letter from breaking of seal, and offsetting to a blank page on the other. The first letter, thanking him for a gift and expressing eagerness to meet him when he visits Montpellier, is addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Monsieur L'Abbé Pourret chez Mr. Bosquet negotiant | a Nismes'.

3pp., 8vo. A long letter in a close hand. Bifolium, with each of the two leaves folded in half vertically to make two columns, with Pourret writing in the right-hand column, and the archbishop giving his responses in the other. In fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled. Docketed on reverse of second leaf 'Mgr. L'arcev. 14. 18. juin. 1785.' The letter begins: 'M. L'abbé jaubert vient de m'addresser une lettre pour votre grandeur que je m'empresse de vous faire parvenir.

2pp., 4to. 36 closely-written lines of text. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed, with 'NISMES' postmark, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Monsieur L'abbé Pourret | membre de plusieurs academies | à Narbonne'. The letter begins: 'il est bien tems me direz vous mon cher collegue que je vous donne de mes nouvelles, et surtout des plantes que que j'ai reçues de votre part'. He proceeds to give a detailed report, naming several specimens.

14pp., 8vo, paginated 225-238. Stitched pamphlet in grey printed wraps. Somewhat worn and aged, with pin hole passing through the pamphlet at head. Siegried's aim is to 'study as frankly as possible the spirit of Franco-American relations. Then - and this might look bold, as I am speaking to a British audience - I will try to analyse what I think is the spirit of Anglo-American relations.

Presumably all published. An excessively scarce item, with no copy traced, and none listed on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC. Printed in black on one side of a piece of thick white 85 x 55 cm paper. A display item, in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with three small closed tears at crease ponts, and one dog-eared corner with slight loss to margin edge below. Striking modernist design, with architectural plans, photographic illustrations, and central collage of architectural features, and two columns of sans serif text, with headings in 'cargo crate' font.

24pp., 4to, paginated 71-94. In brown wraps, printed in black and brown, with illustration by P. Ruty on the cover. Bifolium of advertisements (4pp., 4to) loosely inserted between cover and first leaf. In fair condition, with the first page browned by the loosely inserted advertisements. Wraps (stamped 'Spécimen') chipped and worn. The article on Legros covers pp.71-79; and the Beardsley obituary is on p.90. Also present is a seven-page article (83-89) on 'Murailles'by E. de Crauzat.

One page, 4to, fold marks, good condition. "I take great pleasure in sending you herewith a photograph of the 'Mermaid Tavern' bill, the original of which is in my private collection in Philadelphia. I am also enclosing a transcription of it. I secured this remarkable document from the late Sir Israel Gollancz many years ago." Rosenbach addsa manuscript postscript, "As for your suggestion I am sending the Mermaid Tavern bill to [Comander Tuffill?] and Mr Andre L. SimonThe transcription and photograph are PRESENT, the former with a note on Rosenbach provenance in Berry's hand.

2pp., folio (approximately 41 x 21.5 cm), in double column. Fair, on aged paper, creased and with outer margin trimmed. Tipped-in onto leaf removed from album. The first column introduces the problem, and is followed by a 'Lettre de M. DUPIN ainé, au Prince Président de la République', dated 'Paris, ce 23 Janvier, 1852'. This is in turn followed by a letter 'Au Prince-Président de la République', Paris, 26 January 1852 by five 'Les executeurs testamentaires du feu Roi Louis Phillippe'. They are: Dupin, Duc de Montmorency, Comte de Montalivet, Laplagne-Barris, Scribe.

All four catalogues are stitched and unbound. All four are 8vo, with nos. 1 and 5 of 32 pp, no. 2 of 64 pp, and no 16 of 40 pp. The last leaf of catalogue 2, carrying advertisements is torn with some loss, otherwise the texts are clear and complete, on aged and spotted paper. Providing valuable bibliographical information, in a specialised scientific field.

8vo, 1 p. Very good, on lightly discoloured laid paper with 'TIMBRE ROYAL' watermark. In left-hand margin, clear embossed Timbre Royal seal by Galle and black ink 35 centime stamp (both 2.5 cm diameter). Written in a clear, attractive hand. Total of 35F 35c, 'Pour acquit', under three sub-headings: 'Impression de 200 Afficher grand format; pour la Vente des Mobiliers provenant des Successions dévoluer à 'Etat', '200 Timbrer à 10 centimes' and 'Timbre de la Quittance'.

12mo, 2 pp, 13 lines. Good, on lightly aged paper. He is sending his reply (not present) to an article by André Beaumier 'qui me concerne (Figaro du 11 mars)'. The question of university reform is important and 'à l'ordre du jour', consequently he asks his correspondent to make use of his reply. Fouillee was, according to J. A. Scott, 'the founder of French solidarist philosophy'. Loosely inserted in blue paper folder with catalogue entry for the previous sale of the item laid down on front.

Pseudonym of the French writer Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog (1885-1967), author of the first Penguin, 'Ariel'. One page, 4to. Folded three times. In good condition although creased. Signed in pencil. Written in French. He does not intend to translate 'Rouen' into English. It is not interesting enough for 'un public anglo-saxon'. He thanks her for the thought.
