After following Horton's 'kind advice' concerning 'Mr Hedgcock's & my little alphabet', 're some sketches with more action in them', he has been to 'Town' to show the designs to the publishers Grant Richards. He 'called in person on Thursday but after some delay they have eventually rejected the Alphabet. [...] Evidently from what I was told the sketches such as you advised would have been more what they wanted', so he will do them again 'in that style and try again with other people'.

'Your very closely written letter would have melted any artist's heart and I did the little sketch [not present] in seperate [sic] envelope with great pleasure, particularly as the object of your collection is to cheer you up in your old age.

24pp., 4to, paginated 71-94. In brown wraps, printed in black and brown, with illustration by P. Ruty on the cover. Bifolium of advertisements (4pp., 4to) loosely inserted between cover and first leaf. In fair condition, with the first page browned by the loosely inserted advertisements. Wraps (stamped 'Spécimen') chipped and worn. The article on Legros covers pp.71-79; and the Beardsley obituary is on p.90. Also present is a seven-page article (83-89) on 'Murailles'by E. de Crauzat.

One page, 16mo, spike-hole, mainly good, complete and clear. "I believe the copyright of my drawings which appeared in the P.M.B. [Pall Mall Budget] belongs to us. I made a distinct arrangement to that effect with regrad to drawings I made for the P.M.[Pall Mall] Magazine, altho' I made no agreement (in writing) either way with the 'Budget', the Manager would, no doubt' be able to tell you."

8pp., 4to. In stiff printed wraps. Printed in black and white. Photographic portrait of the artist tipped-in as frontispiece, twenty illustrations in text, and loosely inserted in a wallet at the rear a facsimile (2pp., 8vo) of an article from the Argentine Magazine, Christmas 1929: 'How MAUZAN makes lively posters' by A. Lancelotti. Cover carries image of smiling fat black man shining his foot with a shoebrush, above facsimile of Mauzan's signature. Scarce: does not appear to be present in the Bibliotheque Nationale.

Printed, in a variety of types and point sizes, on one side of a piece of landscape 8vo paper. Text clear and complete. On aged and creased paper, which has been laid down on a backing of pink card. In full reads 'FOXES. Printed on one side of a long sheet, equivalent to two leaves of landscape 4to on top of one another. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. The opening paragraph lays out the purpose of the notice: 'The Baking Trade Board (England and Wales) hereby give notice that they propose to vary for certain classes of workers in certain areas the minimum rates at present operative in the trade and set out in the Trade Board's Notices BK. (SW.) and BK. (19).

Following the singer's death in 1959 Johnny C. Beecher relaunched Holly's official English fan club, helping to keep his reputation alive at a time when he was practically forgotten in America. As Beecher stated in an interview, he kept 'in touch with Buddy's parents, Ella and L.O., and I can say that without them it wouldn't have been possible, as they sent us all sorts of information and photographs that kept up our enthusiasm. The Crickets also helped out and were pretty nice considering all we ever asked 'em was, "What was Buddy really like." Despite that, we became pals.

Two good pieces of jazz ephemera. Both items on shiny art paper and very lightly aged, but in excellent condition overall. The programme: 4to, 12 pp. Stapled pamphlet. Covers in orange and black. An attractive item, with a striking cover entirely consisting of Basie's head, printed in black, floating in a sea of orange colour. Full-page photographs of Basie (at the piano) and Joe Williams (singing at the microphone). Apart from the programme itself, covering a page, the text comprises: a two-page biography of Basie; a one-page feature on Williams; an full-page advertisement by E.M.I.

On one side of a piece of wove paper, 27.5 x 22 cm. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with some light off-setting of the text. An attractive piece of ephemera, with the text presented in a variety of types and point sizes. Reads 'CATHOLIC | EMANCIPATION. | [short thin-thick rule] | THE | HUSBANDMAN & VIPER. | [short thin-thick rule] A HUSBANDMAN found a Viper al- | most frozen to death; he took pity on | the poor Reptile, and placed it in his | bosom, where it soon recovered; and | its first act was to sting [last word in italics] its Deliverer. | The APPLICATION I leave to | Sir C- H-.

The sepia photograph, 10 x 7 cm, shows Korff's head and torso. He is dressed in the costume of a flying ace, with leather coat, gloves, googles and scarf, and is striking a match while staring moodily at the viewer. It is mounted on a leaf of cream paper (24 x 20 cm) removed from an album. In very good condition and attractively mounted, with a piece of nicely-patterned paper (12 x 8.5 cm) beneath the photograph acting as a frame. Korff's large, bold signature runs across the page beneath the phtograph, reading 'Arnold Korff | Wien 25. Oct. 1923'.

Printed in red and black on one side of a piece of paper roughly fifteen inches by nineteen wide. Good on aged paper with some offsetting. A few closed tears skillfully repaired on blank reverse with archival tape. Striking and attractive production with ornate thick decorative border and printer's slug in red ink, enclosing text in a variety of types in black, with 'ORDERS RECEIVED WITHIN' at foot. Two dates neatly corrected in a contemporary hand.

Roughly twelve and half inches by nine and a quarter. Neatly mounted on piece of cream paper, with surrounding ink rules. Good, with some ruckling and wear to corners. Characteristically arresting arrangement of type. Reads: 'CAUTION. | THE ONLY CORRECT COPY | OF DONIZETTI'S OPERA | THE FAVOURITE | AS PERFORMED IN ENGLISH AT THE | THEATRE ROYAL DRURY LANE, | IS PUBLISHED BY | JEFFERYS AND CO.

Naval author and journalist (died 1942). One page, quarto. Discoloured with age and with a few closed tears but in good condition overall. Docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. 'I should be obliged if you could let me have copies of any promotion matter which you have put out in recent years for the purpose of attracting artists to enter competitions for poster designs.' Signed 'H. C. Ferraby' ('EDITOR').

Poster artist (1868-1948). (1900) 3 pages, 8vo, black-edged,foxing and fold mark, remnants of laying down in album, text clear and complete. He describes the deat of his wife in childbirth ("She [Isabel, first wife] was up and about in the morning, confined of a wee girl baby at one midday and all over at 3. everything was going so well too. It was finished so quickly that I never saw her conscious tho' I was in the next room. Its all too awful to think about. The cause was . . .") He had left the notifying to others.
