Theodore Hoppen, in his 'The Mid-Victorian Generation', refers to a 'growing band of anti-Catholic lecturers who toured Britain in the 1850s and 1860s', adding that most 'were rogues like the former Dominican, Giacinto Achilli, and the soi-disant Baron de Camin. Almost all depended financially upon admission fees. Their lurid handbills advertised travesties of the mass, "the secrets of the confessional", and "wafer Gods" to be "sold at 1d. each at the doors".' On 8 x 14.5 cm panel cut from front of envelope. In good condition, lightly-aged. All in Lyndhurst's hand, it reads 'His Grace | The Duke of Wellington KG | &c &c &c | Lyndhurst'. As is customary, the signature is between two horizontal lines, in the bottom left-hand corner.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. The recipient's name has been smudged by Canning, and is illegible. It is 'utterly impossible' for him to 'do anything for Mr Blake', and he is as a consequence returning his memorial, 'which would with greater propriety be addressed to any other department of the Government than to that which I administer: & with the business of which Mr Blake's "claims," as stated in that Memorial have no concern'.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with 6cm vertical closed tear to first leaf, affecting a couple of words. The reverse of the second leaf carries a broken seal in black wax, and is addressed to Clanricarde. The letter begins: 'My dear Ld C: | We are in a great difficulty at the H. of Lords today for want of a third Peer.' He will esteem it a great favour if Clanricarde 'will come at ten and enable me to go on with the Causes - for otherwise there will be the whole expence thrown upon the packs'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on aged paper. Evidently a response to a request for an autograph. Reads: 'Greetings | from | Arthur Balfour | Xmas 1900'.

The signature 'Louis Haghe' on 0.8 x 5 cm. piece of grey paper, evidently cut from a letter. In good condition, close cropped and lightly aged.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He explains his 'great and chief excuse' for breaking his promise to call on her that morning. 'The fact is I have to give an address on Monday evening as President of the Society of Chemical Industry'.

FIELD MESSAGE BOOK: Landscape 8vo notebook with 43pp of manuscript, in a number of different hands (one of them apparently Grubbe's), including seven full-page maps, with two further pages of carbon copies, preceded by 3pp. of printed text titled 'Field Message Book / (For the use of Dismounted Regimental Officers and Non-commissioned Officers of Cavalry and Mounted Infantry.)' In pencil and ink on graph paper pages. In detachable brown cloth cover, with explanatory label ('Cover for Army Book 153').

4pp., folio. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper and creased paper, with slight damage to margins at foot of both leaves. Beneath the heading on the first page is a list of around 75 princes, dukes and lords, headed by 'His Most Gracious Majesty the King', under whose 'immediate patronage' the work is to be commenced. Beneath this, in small type is the prospectus, stressing the 'immense Labour and Expense' attending the work (Lewis later claimed had taken six years to compile it, at an outlay of £48,000), which is to be 'published in Four Volumes Quarto - Price 30s.

Beneath the heading on the first page is a list of around 75 princes, dukes and lords, headed by 'His Most Gracious Majesty the King', under whose 'immediate patronage' the work is to be commenced.

Printed, 4pp., 8vo, fold marks (partly stained), sl. chipped, mainly good condition. 243 paintings listed, with prices. Paintings selected from various sources from Manchester (243) to Edinburgh (15) to the RA (8), etc. A shilling ticket gave entry to a lottery.

1p., 4to. On piece of wove paper, watermarked 'Gray Valley | Parchment'. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Neatly folded, and inserted in a brown paper envelope, carrying the following typed note on its front: 'List of Contents of documents of illness of King George V in 1928 and death.' The list is from the papers of Lord Dawson of Penn. It contains fifteen numbered items, and is headed 'Documents in connection with George V's long illness. in 1928', without authorial attribution. Item 8 is 'Lord Dawson's notes on the King's illness | Also notes from Sir H. Rolleston and Sir R.

5 + [1]pp., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and lightly-worn, with slightly rusted staples and rust stain from paperclip. Scarce: the only actual copy on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat at the LSE in London.

Printed on one side of a piece of 15cm square card. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Four numbered instructions, preceded by: 'There would be a great need for extra bed coverings for children should evacuation ever take place. Suitable covers can be made by sewing together squares knitted up from scraps of wool. They will always be useful even if, as we all hope, they are not needed for their original purpose.' This initiative can be dated from a reference in 'Home & Country' magazine, 1939. Scarce: no copy traced in the Imperial War Museum or elsewhere.

Main headings: 'General Conditions', 'Special Notes' [sub headings for Chairman (Elocution and Manner; Subject Matter; Procedure; Manner of Handling Meeting); Speaker; Proposer and Seconder; Team Work], 'The National Anthem', 'Marking Sheets' and 'Declaring Result'. Scarce: no copy traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

[44]pp., 8vo, paginated 487-530. Rebound in modern red cloth binding, with red leather label on cover, with title 'ADDRESS TO HRH PRINCESS CHARLOTTE' in gilt. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn.

10pp., 4to. Original top-copy typescript. On ten leaves held together by a brass stud. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Typed at end: 'Copyright of Estelle Roberts.' Begins: 'I am very happy to come here to-night to talk to you. While waiting to entrance the meduim I heard these words.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with tape repairs to reverse causing staining along fold line. The note reads: 'Dear Sir | If you will come to The Star at a quarter before nine o'C., we are to be shown the picture of the Waterloo Banquet at that time at my particular request'. Salter's painting was exhibited to the public in 1841. It is now in Apsley House. As another artist of large-scale historical works Hayter would have taken a particular interest in it.

23pp., 12mo, paginated 97-119. Stapled. In grey printed wraps. With stamp, shelfmarks and label of the Board of Education Reference Library, otherwise in good condition, on aged paper. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC.

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears along a central vertical fold. The first three pages carry 32 numbered rules, on the topics: Titles; Design; Management; Membership; Subscriptions; Benefits; Repayments; Funds; Disputes; Alteration of Rules; General. The last page carries three tables (first two regarding 'Ministers' and last on 'Widows & Orphans'), headed 'Schedule of Subscriptions and Payments'. Scarce: no copy located on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The Times of 12 October 1875 carries a report of the passing of the resolution by 'Rev. Mr.

[2] + 4 + [1] pp., folio. Unstitched and unbound. Originally two bifoliums one inside the other, but the two leaves of the outer bifolium have become detached from one another. On aged and toned high-acidity paper, chipping at edges. Five documents, four of them in the original French with English translations, and the fifth ('Declaration made by the Earl of Derby before the signature of the Protocol') in English. The English titles of the four French originals are: 'Protocol' (by Münster, Beust, L. D'Harcourt, Derby, L. F.

2pp., 12mo. 49 lines of text. Bifolium. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed, on reverse of second leaf (which also carries his seal): 'For Sr Richard Bulstrode | Envoy from his Matie of greate Brittaine Att ye Court | Att Bruxells | these'.

Both items in very good condition, on aged paper, and both with minor traces of mount. The letter is 1p., 12mo, on a bifolium. The envelope is a leaf of paper, also 1p., 12mo. It is addressed by Eldon to 'John Cross Esq | 19 Lincolns Inn', franked in the bottom left-hand corner 'Eldon', and is without postmarks. It carries the seal in black wax, with the barest of impressions. Docketed in pencil in a contemporary hand '1819'.

20pp., 12mo. In white covers printed in green and black, with the 'Object' and 'Declaration of Principles' of the SPGB on the inside front cover, and advertisements for other SPGB works on the inside back cover. Stapled. Priced at 3d. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. On front cover: 'This pamphlet shows that the Beveridge Plan will not end the poverty of the working-class.

42pp., 12mo. In yellow wraps printed in black and red, with 'Object' and 'Declaration of Principles' of the SPC inside the front cover, and advertisements for SPC publications on both sides of the back cover. Stapled. In fair condition, aged and worn, with pencil ownership inscriptions of 'Jean Thurlow'. The Preface begins: 'This pamphlet was first published in 1910 as the Manifesto of the Socialist Party of Canada. During the ten-year period ending in 1920, five editions, totalling more than 25,000 copies, were issued.

4pp., 8vo. Stapled. Carbon of original typescript, with indentations showing on the reverse. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, with rust spotting from staple, and punch holes in margin. The report covers the first three pages, and is dated at the end '4th August, 1951'. It is headed 'Charles E. Fraser, Chief Photographer, Lennox Gardens | Director of Exhibitions | Confidential Report | Subject: Comprehensive Photographic Record for posterity of the South Bank Exhibition Festival of Britain 1951'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged and slightly-creased paper. He begins by apologising for the lateness of his response, caused by work which was supposed to be finished at the end of the previous month.
